Chapter 6 - HUNTED IN THE DARK
Leo dragged Lily through the service exit of the kitchen and out into the pouring rain.
Cold rainwater instantly soaked their clothes, plastering their hair to their foreheads.
Behind them, thunder rumbled violently across the night sky, masking the sound of their frantic footsteps.
The vast estate garden was a maze of tall, neatly trimmed hedges and stone fountains.
Red laser sights swept through the heavy rain, searching for any movement.
"Over here!" Leo pulled Lily into a narrow stone drainage pipe beneath the garden wall.
They crawled on their hands and knees through muddy, freezing water.
Lily gagged at the terrible smell, but she gritted her teeth and kept moving.
Her legs were still weak from years of forced paralysis, trembling under the exertion.
"I can't go much faster," Lily sobbed quietly, wiping mud from her face.
"You have to," Leo said, turning around to grab her under her arms, pulling her forward.
"If they catch us, they'll lock you in that room forever, and they'll put me in the ground."
Suddenly, a bright spotlight shone directly down the entrance of the drainage pipe.
"They're in the culvert! Block the exit at the street!" a tactical commander yelled over a bullhorn.
A massive guard stepped into the water at the end of the pipe, blocking their only escape route.
He racked the slide of his shotgun with a heavy metallic click.
"End of the line, kids," the man sneered, raising the barrel.
Suddenly, a loud engine roared through the storm outside the drainage tunnel.
A heavy black SUV smashed straight through the perimeter iron fence at top speed.
The vehicle slammed into the mercenary guard, sending him flying across the concrete driveway.

The driver's side door flew open, and a man in a drenched black raincoat stepped out holding an assault rifle.

"Lily! Get in the truck now!" the man shouted over the sound of rain and gunfire.
"Uncle Raymond!" Lily screamed with overwhelming relief.
