Chapter 15 - TRAPPED IN THE SKY

The emergency red lights inside the elevator cab flickered on, casting eerie shadows over their faces.
The digital floor indicator on the wall froze at Floor 42.
A harsh static buzz sounded through the elevator intercom system.
"Did you really think it would be that easy, little nephew?" Victor's voice purred smoothly over the speaker.
Leo stared up at the speaker, his heart hammering against his ribs.
"Victor!" Leo yelled.
"I must admit, you have your father's stubbornness," Victor sneered through the audio link.
"Crawling through sewers to face me in my own fortress."
"It's almost poetic."
"Let Raymond go!" Lily screamed at the ceiling speaker. "I know everything, father!"
"Ah, my dear, ungrateful daughter," Victor replied, his tone dripping with fake sadness.
"You should have stayed in that wheelchair. You were so much easier to control when you couldn't run."
"Right now, the cable holding your elevator cab is being prepped for remote demolition."
"In precisely sixty seconds, you will both fall 400 feet to the concrete basement."
Leo looked around the enclosed glass elevator wildly.
"We have to get out of here right now!" Leo shouted.
He looked up at the emergency maintenance hatch on the roof of the elevator cab.
Leo jumped, grabbing the edge of the square metal hatch and pushing it open.
"Lily, give me your hand! Quick!" Leo yelled, hoisting himself up onto the top of the elevator cab.
Cold wind whistled violently through the massive open elevator shaft surrounding them.
Thick steel cables stretched up into the terrifying darkness above.

Leo reached down, pulling Lily up through the narrow opening just as a loud mechanical click echoed overhead.
The primary support cable snapped with a sound like a cannon blast, whipping violently through the dark shaft.
