Chapter 8: The Fire That Was Never Meant to Kill

The explosion ripped through the east wing with enough force to shake every chandelier in Sterling Mansion.
Glass rained onto the marble floor.
Smoke rolled through the hallways like a living creature.
Guests screamed.
Someone yelled, "Fire!"
Someone else shouted, "Get out!"
Within seconds, hundreds of terrified people rushed toward the front entrance.
Arthur's voice thundered across the library.
"Nobody opens those doors!"
The guards hesitated.
"Sir, they'll panic!"
"They're supposed to panic."
Arthur's eyes were fixed on the security monitor still functioning inside the library.
The front gate.
The driveway.
The burning east wing.
Everything looked chaotic.
Too chaotic.
He narrowed his eyes.
"They're funneling everyone."
Sarah followed his gaze.
Outside the mansion, several luxury SUVs had quietly positioned themselves beyond the front gate.
Their engines were running.
Their headlights were off.
Waiting.
Arthur whispered,
"This wasn't a bombing."
Sarah looked at him.
"What?"
"It was a distraction."
The head of security answered another radio call.
His face turned pale.
"Sir..."
"What is it?"
"The explosion came from an empty conference room."
Arthur frowned.
"Casualties?"
"None."
"The blast was directional."
Jonathan Hale nodded slowly.
"They never intended to kill anyone."
Sarah understood.
"They wanted everyone to run."
Arthur finished the sentence.
"...so they could hide one person among hundreds."
He turned sharply.
"Vanessa."
Exactly.
While guests fled the estate, Vanessa could disappear with them.
Arthur grabbed the radio.
"Close every gate."
"No vehicle leaves."
"No pedestrian leaves."
"Check every face."
"Especially women changing clothes."
The guards hurried away.
Across the mansion...
Hidden behind thick smoke inside the servants' corridor...
Vanessa smiled.
The explosion had worked perfectly.
Servants were abandoning uniforms.
Guests were covered in soot.
No one knew who belonged where anymore.
She removed the black jacket she'd stolen from one of the security guards.
Then pulled a terrified waitress into an empty pantry.
"I'm sorry."
The waitress looked confused.
"What—"
Vanessa struck her across the head with the butt of a pistol.
The woman collapsed instantly.
Vanessa quickly changed into the waitress's uniform.
Hair tucked beneath a white cap.
Apron.
Black shoes.
Thirty seconds later...
She walked calmly into the crowd carrying a silver tray.
No one looked twice.
Meanwhile...
Inside the library...
Bella suddenly sat upright.
Her breathing became uneven again.
Sarah immediately knelt beside her.
"Sweetheart?"
Bella wasn't looking at the fire.
She was staring toward the ceiling.
Listening.
Arthur noticed.
"What is it?"
Bella slowly raised one finger.
Then drew a circle in the air.
Jonathan frowned.
"She's trying to tell us something."
Bella repeated the motion.
Round.
Round and round.
Sarah's eyes widened.
"The grandfather clock."
Arthur looked toward the hidden Archive.
"The one that disappeared."
Bella nodded rapidly.
Then pointed toward the basement.
Arthur's heartbeat quickened.
"The clock wasn't stolen."
Jonathan suddenly whispered,
"It was moved."
Everyone looked at him.
Jonathan closed his eyes.
"My brother built a second Archive."
Arthur stared.
"What?"
Jonathan met his eyes.
"He never trusted one hiding place."
"There were always two."
Arthur felt the room tilt beneath him.
"My father never told me."
"He couldn't."
Jonathan's voice was heavy with regret.
"The fewer people who knew..."
"...the safer it was."
Sarah asked quietly,
"What's inside the second Archive?"
Jonathan answered without hesitation.
"Everything."
Arthur turned to Collins.
"Did my father ever renovate the basement?"
The old house manager looked as though he had just remembered something.
"Twenty-one years ago."
"What did he build?"
"A wine cellar."
Jonathan immediately shook his head.
"No."
Arthur frowned.
"What?"
"My brother hated wine."
The room became silent.
Jonathan looked directly at Arthur.
"There was never a wine cellar."
Arthur didn't wait another second.
"Collins."
"Take us there."
Five minutes later...
The group descended into the oldest section of Sterling Mansion.
The basement smelled of stone and damp wood.
Dust covered every shelf.
Hundreds of expensive wine bottles filled the walls.
Jonathan walked slowly between the racks.
Then smiled.
"I knew it."
Arthur looked around.
"What?"
Jonathan picked up one bottle.
Without hesitation...
He twisted it.
Nothing happened.
Then he pulled it slightly outward.
Click.
A deep metallic sound echoed beneath the floor.
The entire wine rack slowly slid sideways.
Sarah gasped.
Another hidden passage.
Much larger than the first.
Arthur looked at Jonathan.
"You knew."
"My brother and I built it together."
Cold air drifted from the darkness.
The lights inside switched on automatically.
The corridor looked untouched.
Unlike the first Archive.
No footprints.
No dust disturbed.
Jonathan whispered,
"They haven't found this one yet."
Arthur led the way.
The passage opened into a circular underground vault reinforced with steel.
Shelves lined every wall.
Thousands of files.
Boxes.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Financial records.
Even old newspapers.
Sarah slowly turned in a circle.
"My God..."
Jonathan spoke quietly.
"This is the real Archive."
Arthur walked toward the center of the room.
A massive steel safe stood there.
Unlike the first one...
It was still locked.
On the front was a biometric scanner.
Arthur placed his hand on it.
Nothing.
A red light flashed.
ACCESS DENIED.
Jonathan frowned.
"That's impossible."
Arthur tried again.
Nothing.
Sarah suddenly remembered Bella.
The little girl had quietly walked toward the safe.
She looked at the scanner.
Then looked at the tiny silver key around her neck.
Without hesitation...
She inserted the key into a nearly invisible slot beneath the scanner.
A soft electronic tone echoed through the vault.
IDENTITY VERIFIED.
Everyone froze.
The scanner spoke with an automated voice.
Secondary authentication accepted.
Arthur stared at Bella.
"Secondary?"
Jonathan slowly smiled.
"My brother was smarter than I remembered."
The scanner continued.
Waiting for primary family confirmation.
Bella looked up at Arthur.
Then gently reached for his hand.
She placed his palm over the scanner herself.
For two long seconds...
Nothing happened.
Then—
ACCESS GRANTED.
Heavy steel bolts unlocked one by one.
The massive vault door slowly opened.
Inside...
There was no gold.
No cash.
No jewels.
Only three objects.
An old leather journal.
A thick sealed envelope marked OPEN ONLY IF EMILY DIES.
And...
A videotape labeled in Arthur's father's handwriting.
THE TRUTH ABOUT BELLA.
Arthur's face lost all color.
Sarah's heart pounded.
Jonathan whispered,
"Oh no..."
Arthur slowly turned toward him.
"What?"
Jonathan closed his eyes.
"If that tape still exists..."
"...then everything we've believed about Bella..."
He couldn't finish the sentence.
Before anyone could open the tape—
A loud metallic clang echoed behind them.
The hidden vault door slammed shut.
The lights went out.
Complete darkness swallowed the room.
Then a familiar female voice came through hidden speakers.
Soft.
Calm.
Smiling.
Vanessa.
"You finally found it."
Arthur clenched his fists.
"Where are you?"
Her laughter echoed through the vault.
"Exactly where Emily begged me never to be."
A pause.
May you like
Then she whispered,
"Welcome to your father's final trap."
