Chapter 14: The Last Recording

Darkness swallowed the vault.
The emergency lights died.
The projector shut off.
Even the ventilation system fell silent.
For one terrifying second...
No one knew who was standing beside them.
Or pointing a weapon at them.
Bella gripped Sarah's hand so tightly it hurt.
Sarah pulled the little girl against her chest.
"It's okay."
She whispered the words even though she wasn't sure they were true.
A metallic click echoed somewhere in the darkness.
Then another.
Night vision.
Someone had activated military-grade goggles.
Colonel Reeves shouted,
"Infrared!"
"Nobody fire unless you identify your target!"
The operators instantly formed a defensive circle around Arthur, Sarah, Bella, Jonathan, and Dr. Levin.
Outside the vault...
Heavy footsteps approached.
Unlike before, these soldiers didn't try to hide.
They wanted everyone to hear them coming.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
The reinforced blast door trembled with each impact.
David Hale slowly backed away.
His face had lost every trace of confidence.
Vanessa noticed.
"So..."
She said quietly.
"You're afraid of them too."
David looked at her.
"I warned you."
"You thought you could steal the Archive."
"You never understood who actually owned it."
Vanessa tightened her grip on the pistol.
"I don't answer to anyone."
David laughed bitterly.
"You already did."
The blast door exploded inward.
Steel twisted.
Concrete shattered.
Smoke rolled across the floor.
Powerful tactical flashlights cut through the darkness.
A dozen figures entered.
Black armor.
Black helmets.
No insignia.
No voices.
Only disciplined movement.
At their center walked a woman.
She wasn't carrying a rifle.
Only a black cane.
She appeared to be in her early sixties.
Silver hair tied neatly behind her head.
An elegant black coat.
She walked with complete confidence.
Every operator in Ghost Protocol lowered their weapons.
Not out of fear.
Out of recognition.
Colonel Reeves stared at her.
His voice barely worked.
"...Director."
The woman stopped.
Her calm gray eyes swept across the room.
Arthur.
Jonathan.
David.
Vanessa.
Sarah.
Finally...
Bella.
She smiled sadly.
"So."
"The Sterling children finally opened the Archive."
Arthur stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
She looked at him.
"My name is Margaret Ashcroft."
"I created Ghost Protocol."
Jonathan whispered,
"No..."
"You disappeared twenty-seven years ago."
Margaret nodded.
"That was the idea."
Arthur's patience snapped.
"My wife was murdered."
"My daughter was tortured."
"My home was attacked."
"I don't care who founded what."
"I want the truth."
Margaret looked at him for several long seconds.
Then she nodded.
"You deserve it."
She turned toward one of her officers.
"The case."
A black metal case was placed on the stone table.
Margaret unlocked it with her fingerprint.
Inside...
There was only one item.
A small digital recorder.
Arthur frowned.
"What is that?"
Margaret answered quietly.
"The last conversation Emily Sterling ever recorded."
The room froze.
Arthur stared at the recorder.
"My wife..."
"...recorded her killer?"
Margaret nodded.
"Emily suspected someone inside the family."
"So she wore a hidden recorder."
Vanessa's breathing became uneven.
Margaret noticed.
"You've never heard this recording."
Vanessa whispered,
"No..."
Margaret pressed PLAY.
Static filled the vault.
Then Emily's familiar voice.
Calm.
Steady.
"Vanessa..."
"Please don't do this."
Arthur closed his eyes.
It was Emily.
Without question.
Vanessa's younger voice answered.
"Give me the journal."
Emily replied,
"Even if I did..."
"They'd still kill you."
Silence.
Then Vanessa spoke again.
"You don't understand."
Emily answered immediately.
"No."
"You don't."
Arthur looked toward Vanessa.
Her hands had begun shaking.
The recording continued.
Emily: "Arthur would help you."
Vanessa: "Your husband can't even see what's happening inside his own house."
Arthur lowered his head.
Every word felt like a knife.
Emily's voice softened.
"Vanessa..."
"You're family."
Vanessa's recorded laugh sounded broken.
"Not to the Sterlings."
Emily answered with heartbreaking sincerity.
"You already are."
Long silence followed.
Then—
A car door slammed.
An engine started.
Vanessa spoke again.
"Drive."
Emily replied.
"No."
Then came the sound of a struggle.
Rapid breathing.
Fabric tearing.
Emily cried out.
The steering wheel horn blared continuously.
Arthur's hands trembled uncontrollably.
Suddenly—
A gunshot exploded through the recording.
Bella buried her face against Sarah.
The room remained perfectly silent.
Emily gasped.
Then whispered one final sentence.
"Protect Bella..."
The recording ended.
No one moved.
Arthur slowly looked toward Vanessa.
His eyes were filled with grief.
Not rage.
Not hatred.
Only grief.
"You had a chance."
He whispered.
"Emily still wanted to save you."
Vanessa collapsed to her knees.
"I know."
Her voice cracked.
"I know."
"I hear that recording every night."
Arthur closed his eyes.
"You took her from Bella."
"You took her from me."
Vanessa began crying openly.
"I never wanted her to die."
"You pulled the trigger."
"I panicked."
"You lied for two years."
"I was afraid."
Arthur shook his head slowly.
"No."
"You were selfish."
The words shattered what little composure Vanessa had left.
She dropped the pistol.
It slid across the stone floor.
No one reached for it.
Margaret quietly turned off the recorder.
"The truth is finally complete."
Jonathan looked toward David.
"So why continue?"
David laughed weakly.
"Because once people start lying..."
"...they keep lying to survive."
Margaret nodded.
"That part is true."
She looked toward her officers.
"Cuff them."
Two operators moved toward Vanessa.
Another approached David.
Neither resisted.
It was over.
Or so everyone believed.
Bella suddenly looked up.
Her eyes fixed on the recorder.
Then she whispered,
"...No."
Sarah frowned.
"What is it?"
Bella pointed toward the recorder.
Then toward Margaret.
Finally...
Toward the ceiling.
Margaret's expression changed.
"What?"
Bella slowly covered one eye.
Exactly the same gesture she had made before.
The gesture she always used when remembering the night Emily died.
Margaret turned pale.
She replayed the recording.
This time...
Everyone listened carefully.
Not to the voices.
To the background.
At the exact moment before the gunshot...
Another sound emerged.
A man's voice.
Very faint.
Almost impossible to hear.
Only four words.
"Take the shot now."
The vault fell into stunned silence.
Arthur stared at Margaret.
"That wasn't David."
"No."
"It wasn't Vanessa."
Jonathan whispered,
"Someone else was there."
Margaret slowly lowered the recorder.
Her face had gone completely white.
"I know that voice."
Arthur stepped forward.
"Whose voice?"
Margaret looked directly into his eyes.
"The man..."
She swallowed hard.
"...who ordered Ghost Protocol to shut down."
Arthur's heart pounded.
"Who?"
Margaret whispered the name.
"Chief Daniel Morris."
Silence.
Arthur couldn't believe it.
The city's Chief of Police.
The man who had comforted him at Emily's funeral.
The man who had investigated her death.
The man who had just spent the evening trying to arrest Sarah.
He hadn't covered up the murder.
He had commanded it.
At that exact moment, every radio on every operator's vest crackled to life simultaneously.
A frantic voice shouted:
"Director!"
"Morris is gone!"
"He escaped ten minutes ago!"
Margaret closed her eyes.
Arthur clenched his fists.
May you like
The real mastermind...
Had just slipped away.
