Chapter 5: The Child Who Remembered the Gunshot

The first gunshot echoed through the mansion.

The second came only seconds later.

Dust drifted from the ceiling of the hidden Archive.

Sarah instinctively pulled Bella behind her.

The little girl buried her face against Sarah's side but didn't scream.

She had learned long ago that silence was safer than fear.

Arthur's voice cut through the tension.

"Get them out."

The head of security nodded immediately.

"Miss Mitchell, Bella—this way."

"No."

Sarah looked directly at Arthur.

"If Vanessa planned this, she's expecting us to use the same tunnel."

Arthur paused.

She was right.

The hidden passage had become a trap.

Another frantic voice burst through the security radio.

"Sir! Three armed men entered through the catering entrance!"

"What?"

"They're dressed as private security!"

"Two of our guards are down!"

Arthur's expression hardened.

"How many?"

"We've confirmed three."

"Maybe more."

Arthur pulled a compact pistol from a biometric safe hidden inside the Archive's desk.

Sarah looked at him in surprise.

"You keep weapons down here?"

"My father did."

He checked the magazine.

Fully loaded.

Then he handed another handgun to the head of security.

"Protect Bella."

"I'll find whoever came for us."

Sarah grabbed Arthur's arm before he could leave.

"Mr. Sterling."

He stopped.

"If they came for the Archive..."

She glanced at the empty safe.

"...they're not here anymore."

Arthur understood immediately.

"They're buying time."

"For Vanessa."

Exactly.

She hadn't run.

She had escaped according to a plan.

Arthur's jaw tightened.

He hated being manipulated.

Especially inside his own home.

Upstairs...

The Sterling Charity Gala had dissolved into chaos.

More than three hundred guests crowded the marble ballroom.

Champagne glasses sat untouched.

A string quartet had stopped playing.

Politicians whispered to CEOs.

Reporters filmed everything from behind velvet ropes.

Nobody knew why the mansion's alarms were screaming.

Arthur emerged from a concealed door behind the grand staircase.

Every conversation stopped.

The richest man in the room looked nothing like the confident billionaire they expected.

His tuxedo jacket was dusty.

His sleeves were rolled up.

His face looked years older than it had an hour ago.

One board member approached cautiously.

"Arthur..."

"The guests are frightened."

Arthur didn't even slow down.

"Take everyone into the east ballroom."

"Nobody leaves."

The governor frowned.

"Excuse me?"

Arthur stopped.

"This is no longer a charity event."

"It's a crime scene."

A wave of shocked whispers spread across the room.

Several reporters immediately raised their cameras.

Arthur pointed toward them.

"No recording."

Security began collecting phones.

Complaints erupted instantly.

"You can't do that!"

"I'm a federal judge!"

"I'm a United States Senator!"

Arthur's answer was ice cold.

"If anyone leaves this estate before the police finish searching..."

"...I'll personally release every surveillance recording from tonight."

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Everyone in the room had something to protect.

Reputation.

Business.

Political careers.

Arthur knew exactly which pressure to apply.

Meanwhile...

Vanessa watched everything from a hidden maintenance corridor.

A faint smile crossed her lips.

She removed the elegant evening earrings she'd been wearing.

Then the blond wig.

Long black hair fell across her shoulders.

She looked like a completely different woman.

One of the armed men approached her.

"The Archive was empty."

"I know."

"The drive?"

Arthur has it."

"What now?"

Vanessa looked toward the ballroom through a ventilation grate.

"We change the plan."

"The child."

The man frowned.

"Bella?"

"She's the only witness left."

"And Sarah?"

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"Kill her first."

Back inside the hidden passage...

Bella suddenly stopped walking.

Sarah looked down.

"What is it?"

The little girl stared blankly ahead.

Then...

She covered both ears.

Her breathing accelerated.

Arthur noticed.

"Dr. Levin."

The physician knelt beside Bella.

"She's having a flashback."

Sarah frowned.

"A flashback?"

The doctor nodded.

"Trauma survivors often react to sounds."

"Especially sounds similar to the original event."

Bella slowly lifted trembling fingers.

She pointed upward.

Then made a steering motion.

As though holding a car wheel.

Arthur stared.

"The accident..."

Bella nodded.

Then she covered one eye.

Sarah watched carefully.

"What does that mean?"

Bella squeezed her eyes shut.

Her tiny body began shaking violently.

Then...

For the first time in over two years...

Words poured out.

Broken.

Scattered.

Barely understandable.

"...Bang..."

Arthur dropped to one knee.

"Bella."

"...Mommy..."

Tears streamed down her face.

"...Crying..."

Sarah gently rubbed her back.

"It's okay."

"You're safe."

Bella shook her head violently.

"...Not crash..."

Arthur froze.

"What?"

Bella looked directly into his eyes.

"...Bang first..."

The hidden corridor became completely silent.

Arthur's heartbeat thundered inside his ears.

"What did you say?"

Bella struggled for every word.

"...Loud bang..."

"...Then car..."

Sarah suddenly understood.

Her face drained of color.

"The gunshot."

Arthur whispered.

"The accident..."

"...started with a gunshot."

Bella nodded repeatedly.

Then collapsed into Sarah's arms, exhausted.

Dr. Levin checked her pulse.

"She's okay."

"She simply pushed herself too far."

Arthur slowly stood.

Everything he had believed for two years began falling apart.

Emily hadn't simply lost control of her car.

Something had happened first.

Someone had made sure she never reached home.

The security radio crackled again.

"Sir!"

"We caught one of them!"

Arthur grabbed the radio.

"Alive?"

"Barely."

"Bring him to the library."

Arthur looked toward Sarah.

"Stay with Bella."

She nodded.

"I won't let her out of my sight."

Arthur hesitated.

Then he did something Sarah never expected.

He removed the USB drive from his jacket.

"If anything happens to me..."

He placed it into Sarah's hand.

"...don't give this to anyone."

"Not even the police."

Sarah stared at him.

"What?"

"I don't know who I can trust anymore."

Their eyes met.

For the first time...

Arthur Sterling trusted an employee more than anyone else inside his mansion.

Sarah closed her fingers around the USB.

"I promise."

Arthur gave a single nod.

Then disappeared toward the library.

Neither of them noticed...

A tiny red laser dot had appeared briefly on the wall beside Sarah.

Someone was watching from outside.

Someone with a sniper rifle.

The dot slid slowly...

May you like

Until it rested on Sarah's chest.

And a finger began to squeeze the trigger...
