Chapter 3: The Message Emily Left Behind

No one breathed.
Arthur stared at the black USB drive resting inside the leather box.
The words written across the faded label blurred before his eyes.
FOR ARTHUR.
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME... DON'T TRUST VANESSA.
His fingers tightened around the drive.
Vanessa's voice broke the silence.
"This is ridiculous."
Her laugh sounded forced.
"You don't actually believe someone wrote that two years ago."
Arthur didn't answer.
He was still staring at Emily's handwriting.
He would have recognized it anywhere.
Every birthday card.
Every anniversary letter.
Every sticky note she had ever left on the refrigerator.
It was hers.
Without question.
Vanessa took a careful step forward.
"Arthur..."
He raised one hand.
She stopped immediately.
"Don't."
The single word carried more weight than any shout.
Sarah watched Arthur's face change.
For the first time since she had begun working at Sterling Mansion, the billionaire no longer looked like the man who controlled boardrooms and billion-dollar negotiations.
He looked like a husband who had just heard his late wife whisper across two years of silence.
Arthur slowly picked up the sealed envelope beneath the USB.
The paper had yellowed around the edges.
Across the front was written only three words.
For My Husband.
The seal remained intact.
Vanessa swallowed.
"I've never seen that before."
Arthur finally looked at her.
"I believe you."
For one brief moment, relief crossed Vanessa's face.
Then Arthur continued.
"Because if you had..."
"...you would have destroyed it."
Her expression froze.
Sarah felt a chill crawl down her spine.
Arthur carefully broke the seal.
Inside was a single handwritten letter.
He unfolded it with trembling hands.
The room became so quiet that even the rain tapping against the mansion windows seemed deafening.
Arthur began reading silently.
The color slowly drained from his face.
His breathing became uneven.
Sarah couldn't see the words.
But she saw one tear fall onto the page.
Arthur Sterling did not cry.
He hadn't even cried publicly at Emily's funeral.
Yet now...
His hands were shaking.
"What does it say?"
Vanessa's voice sounded almost desperate.
Arthur ignored her.
He continued reading.
Halfway through the letter, his eyes stopped.
He looked toward Bella.
The little girl was sitting quietly beside Sarah, clutching the tiny silver key.
Arthur closed his eyes.
Then he folded the letter carefully.
"You wrote this before the accident..."
he whispered.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"What accident?"
Arthur looked directly into her eyes.
"My wife's accident."
His tone made Sarah's heart pound.
It wasn't grief anymore.
It was suspicion.
Arthur placed both the letter and the USB back into the box.
"No one touches these."
Vanessa forced another smile.
"You can't seriously think Emily predicted a car crash."
"I don't know what she predicted."
Arthur's voice remained calm.
"But she was afraid."
"And now I want to know why."
Vanessa folded her arms.
"You're letting a dead woman's paranoia destroy our future."
Arthur looked at her for several long seconds.
"Our future?"
He glanced at Bella.
"My daughter was burned less than thirty minutes ago."
"My late wife left behind a letter warning me not to trust you."
"My daughter just spoke for the first time in two years..."
"...and you're worried about our future?"
Vanessa had no answer.
A knock interrupted the moment.
One of the security guards entered.
"Sir..."
Arthur looked up.
"The guests have begun arriving."
The annual Sterling Charity Gala.
Nearly four hundred of the city's wealthiest businessmen, politicians, judges, and reporters would be walking through the front doors within the hour.
Arthur looked toward the window.
Luxury cars were already lining the circular driveway.
Vanessa seized the opportunity.
"You can't cancel."
Arthur said nothing.
"The governor is coming."
"So are the investors from London."
"The board members."
"The media."
"If you cancel tonight..."
"It'll destroy months of planning."
Arthur remained silent.
Vanessa moved closer.
"We can settle this afterward."
"No."
Arthur's answer came instantly.
"Tonight."
Vanessa frowned.
"What?"
"We settle it tonight."
She forced another smile.
"Good."
"I'm glad we're being reasonable."
Arthur looked at the head of security.
"Lock every exit."
The guard blinked.
"Sir?"
"No guest leaves the mansion until I say so."
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Arthur continued.
"Search every security recording from the last forty-eight hours."
"Yes, sir."
"Retrieve every backup file."
"Yes, sir."
"Especially the cameras covering Bella's floor."
Vanessa's breathing quickened.
Arthur noticed.
"So..."
he said quietly.
"...is there something you're worried they'll find?"
She laughed.
"Of course not."
Arthur nodded.
"I hope not."
Mr. Collins suddenly cleared his throat.
"Sir..."
Arthur turned.
"There is something else."
"What is it?"
Collins hesitated.
"I wasn't certain it mattered before."
"But now..."
Arthur waited.
"The night Mrs. Emily died..."
Vanessa's head snapped toward the old butler.
"...I saw Miss Carlisle leaving the west garage."
Vanessa interrupted immediately.
"That's impossible."
Collins ignored her.
"Mrs. Emily's car had already left."
"Miss Carlisle appeared to be in a hurry."
Arthur stared at Vanessa.
"You told me you stayed home that night."
Vanessa answered without hesitation.
"I did."
Collins slowly shook his head.
"I remember because she nearly backed into one of the gardeners."
Vanessa's face went white.
"You're mistaken."
"I've worked here thirty years."
"I remember."
"You were old then."
"I'm older now."
"And my memory hasn't improved enough to invent things."
Arthur looked at Vanessa.
"You lied."
"I forgot."
"You forgot leaving my house at eleven o'clock at night?"
"I was buying medicine."
"For whom?"
She hesitated.
"My sister."
"You don't have a sister."
Silence.
Sarah stared at Vanessa in disbelief.
Arthur knew every detail of her life.
Or at least...
He thought he did.
Vanessa took another step backward.
"You've investigated me?"
Arthur answered honestly.
"No."
"I loved you."
The words hit harder than an accusation.
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
For the first time, she had nothing to say.
Arthur slipped the USB into his jacket pocket.
Then he turned toward Sarah.
"Miss Mitchell."
She looked up nervously.
"Yes, sir?"
"Thank you..."
Sarah blinked.
"...for protecting my daughter."
Tears filled her eyes.
She hadn't expected those words.
Not from him.
Arthur walked toward Bella.
He knelt in front of her.
Slowly.
Carefully.
As though approaching a frightened animal.
"I'm sorry."
Bella looked at him.
"I should have seen sooner."
She didn't move.
Arthur reached into his pocket.
He removed a small white handkerchief.
Instead of touching Bella...
He gently wiped away the soot still clinging to one strand of her burned hair.
Bella watched him.
Then...
Very slowly...
She reached out with one tiny hand.
And took hold of his little finger.
Arthur stopped breathing.
It had been over two years since Bella had willingly touched him.
His eyes filled with tears.
"I'm here now."
He whispered.
"I promise."
Bella looked into his eyes.
Then, with great effort...
She whispered one more word.
Barely audible.
"...Basement."
Arthur frowned.
"The basement?"
Bella nodded weakly.
Then she pointed toward Vanessa.
Before anyone could ask another question—
The mansion lights suddenly went out.
Every chandelier.
Every hallway lamp.
Every security monitor.
Darkness swallowed the Sterling Mansion.
A second later—
The emergency alarm began screaming.
The head of security grabbed his radio.
"Sir!"
"There has been a breach!"
Arthur stood instantly.
"What happened?"
A frightened voice crackled through the radio.
"The surveillance room..."
The transmission dissolved into static.
Then came one final sentence.
"...someone just stole the hard drives."
Silence.
Arthur slowly turned toward Vanessa.
Her place beside the bedroom door...
May you like
Was empty.
Vanessa Carlisle had disappeared.
