My Boss's Fiancée Burned His Daughter's Hair—But the Hidden Journal Beneath the Mansion Exposed a Murder That Changed Everything

The smell of burning hair is unforgettable.

Sharp.

Bitter.

It carries that unmistakable scent of scorched keratin, the kind that instantly awakens every survival instinct in your body.

Something is wrong.

Someone is getting hurt.

I was halfway down the marble hallway with a basket of freshly folded towels when the odor reached me.

My stomach lurched.

It was exactly six o'clock on Tuesday evening.

Inside the Sterling mansion, that meant only one thing.

Preparation for Arthur Sterling's annual charity gala.

Arthur Sterling—the billionaire CEO of Sterling Heavy Industries—was downstairs entertaining investors before the event.

His fiancée, Vanessa, had been assigned one simple task.

Get seven-year-old Bella ready.

Bella hadn't spoken since her mother's fatal car accident two years earlier.

Not a single word.

The laundry basket slipped from my hands.

White towels scattered across the polished floor.

I didn't stop to pick them up.

I ran.

My shoes echoed across the empty mansion as I raced toward the second floor.

Every step reminded me what I stood to lose.

I desperately needed this job.

My rent was already two months overdue.

My mother depended on the medical insurance Arthur's company provided while she fought through dialysis treatments three towns away.

There was one rule every employee learned on the first day.

Never interfere.

"You're the staff, Sarah," Vanessa had told me with a polished smile that never reached her eyes.

"You clean. You cook. You watch the child. And you stay invisible."

"Arthur hates unnecessary distractions."

But the smell kept getting stronger.

I shoved open the master bathroom doors.

Warm steam still floated through the room.

Mixed into it was the nauseating odor of burned hair.

The sight before me stopped me cold.

Bella sat on a velvet stool, gripping the seat so tightly her tiny knuckles had turned white.

Tears filled her eyes.

She stared helplessly into the mirror.

Behind her stood Vanessa.

Silk robe.

Perfect makeup.

Diamond necklace.

Not a single strand of hair out of place.

In one hand she held a professional curling iron.

The temperature dial was turned all the way up.

Heat shimmered above the ceramic barrel.

"I told you to stop moving, you little mute," Vanessa whispered.

She didn't yell.

Her voice was calm.

Controlled.

That made it even crueler.

She wrapped a thin section of Bella's blond hair around the barrel.

Instead of curling it...

She clamped the iron shut near the roots.

And held it there.

Sssssss...

Smoke drifted upward.

Bella's mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Her body jerked in pain.

Vanessa yanked her back by the hair.

"Arthur wants you looking perfect tonight," she murmured while admiring herself in the mirror.

"If you can't be perfect..."

"You can at least learn to obey."

She slowly lifted the iron closer to Bella's ear.

"If you move again..."

"I'll burn this instead."

Everything inside me snapped.

I forgot about the rent.

I forgot about my mother's hospital bills.

I forgot Arthur Sterling owned half the city.

I forgot that touching his fiancée could destroy my life.

All I saw was a terrified little girl.

"Get away from her!"

I crossed the room in two strides.

My shoulder slammed into Vanessa's ribs with every ounce of anger I'd swallowed over the past six months.

She screamed.

The curling iron flew from her hand.

It bounced across the marble countertop before crashing onto the floor.

Vanessa lost her balance.

Her heels slipped on the bath rug.

She crashed hard against the side of the bathtub.

I never looked back.

I lifted Bella into my arms.

She trembled so violently it felt as though her entire body was shaking apart.

I wrapped one hand around the back of her head.

The other shielded her face.

"It's okay," I whispered.

"I've got you."

"You're safe now."

The smell of burned hair made my stomach turn.

Vanessa staggered upright.

The polished socialite had disappeared.

Only fury remained.

"You stupid little bitch!" she screamed.

"Do you have any idea what you've done?"

"You were burning her!" I shouted.

"I saw everything!"

"I was styling her hair!"

She looked down at the growing bruise on her arm.

"You assaulted me."

Then she laughed.

Cold.

Unstable.

Almost delighted.

"You're finished."

"Not just fired."

"I'm going to have you arrested."

"I'll make sure nobody hires you ever again."

"And your sick mother..."

She smiled.

"Good luck paying for dialysis from a jail cell."

Ice spread through my chest.

She knew about my mother.

I'd never told her.

She had searched through my personal records.

"Please..."

My voice shook.

"You were hurting Bella."

"Look at her hair."

The burned section stood out clearly against the rest of Bella's soft blond curls.

Vanessa barely glanced at it.

"She moved."

"It was an accident."

"But attacking me wasn't."

She walked calmly to the wall intercom.

Pressed the button.

"Security."

"Call the police."

"Our nanny has become violent."

"She attacked me..."

Vanessa paused deliberately.

Then smiled.

"And she tried to hurt Bella."

"What?"

I stared at her in disbelief.

"You're lying."

She stepped closer until only inches separated us.

"Who do you think Arthur will believe?"

"His future wife..."

"Or the desperate employee cleaning his house?"

She reached toward Bella.

"Give her to me."

"No."

I slapped her hand away.

Bella buried her face against my apron.

"Leave my house," Vanessa hissed.

"Before security drags you out."

I didn't move.

I knew my career was probably over.

But I refused to leave Bella alone.

"Not until Mr. Sterling gets here."

Vanessa burst into laughter.

"You actually think Arthur cares?"

"He's downstairs with investors."

"He barely notices that child."

"He thinks she's damaged."

"I'm the one fixing this family."

She raised her hand.

"I'm going to teach you your—"

Click.

The bedroom door opened.

Every sound vanished.

Arthur Sterling stood in the doorway.

Black tuxedo.

Tie hanging loose around his neck.

Broad shoulders.

Expression carved from stone.

He didn't look at me.

May you like

He didn't look at Bella.

His eyes rested only on Vanessa.
