Chapter 13: Emily's Last Plan

Click.
The sound of the rifle chamber echoed through the darkness.
The red laser remained perfectly still on Sarah's forehead.
No one moved.
No one even breathed.
Colonel Reeves slowly raised one hand.
"Easy."
The operators immediately froze.
Arthur instinctively stepped in front of Sarah.
"If you're going to shoot someone..."
"...shoot me."
The voice hidden in the darkness laughed softly.
"You still don't understand, Arthur."
"We don't need you dead."
"We need you alive."
Sarah felt Bella's tiny fingers wrap around her hand.
The little girl wasn't trembling anymore.
She was staring into the darkness.
As if she recognized something.
Then—
She whispered.
"Uncle..."
The word echoed through the vault.
Arthur turned immediately.
"What did you say?"
Bella pointed toward the darkness.
"...Uncle."
Colonel Reeves' expression changed instantly.
"No..."
Jonathan looked confused.
"What?"
Reeves slowly lowered his weapon.
"I know that voice."
The laughter stopped.
Heavy footsteps echoed from the far end of the chamber.
A man emerged from the shadows.
Black tactical clothing.
Silver hair.
Late sixties.
Calm gray eyes.
Across the left side of his face stretched an old burn scar.
Jonathan's face turned ghost white.
"...David."
The man smiled.
"It's been a long time, brother."
Arthur looked from Jonathan to the stranger.
"You know him?"
Jonathan didn't answer.
His entire body had become rigid.
Colonel Reeves whispered,
"I watched him die."
The man chuckled.
"So did everyone else."
Arthur's patience finally snapped.
"Enough."
"Who are you?"
The man stopped beneath the emergency light.
"My name..."
"...is David Hale."
Arthur frowned.
"Hale?"
David nodded.
"Jonathan's younger brother."
Jonathan closed his eyes.
"I buried you."
"You buried an empty coffin."
Silence consumed the vault.
Jonathan looked as though twenty years had disappeared from his life.
"You betrayed us."
David smiled.
"No."
"You abandoned me."
Arthur stepped closer.
"What does any of this have to do with Sarah?"
David looked directly at Sarah.
His smile disappeared.
"Everything."
He reached into his coat.
The operators immediately aimed their rifles.
Instead of a weapon...
David removed a faded photograph.
He tossed it onto the floor.
Sarah picked it up.
Her hands began shaking.
The photograph showed a young woman holding a baby.
The woman was unmistakably Linda.
Sarah's mother.
The baby wore a tiny knitted blanket.
On the back someone had written:
Grace Eleanor Brooks.
Sarah whispered,
"My real name..."
David nodded.
"Grace."
Tears filled Sarah's eyes.
"My mother called me Grace..."
"...when I was very little."
Fragments of memory returned.
A lullaby.
A cabin.
Someone calling,
"Grace, run."
Then darkness.
David continued.
"Your mother changed your identity."
"She had no choice."
Sarah looked at him.
"You knew my mother?"
"I loved her."
The room fell silent.
Jonathan stared at his brother.
"What?"
David's voice became softer.
"Linda wasn't just Eleanor's sister."
"...She was my wife."
Jonathan staggered backward.
"No..."
David looked at him sadly.
"Yes."
Arthur slowly pieced everything together.
"That would make..."
David nodded.
"Sarah is my daughter."
Sarah felt the world tilt beneath her.
"No."
"My father died before I was born."
David shook his head.
"That's what Linda wanted you to believe."
Sarah remembered every story her mother had told her.
Your father died protecting us.
Never ask about him.
Never trust men in uniforms.
Never use your real birthday.
None of it had ever made sense.
Until now.
Arthur looked at David carefully.
"If you're her father..."
"...why are you pointing a rifle at her?"
David laughed bitterly.
"I'm not."
He turned toward the darkness.
"Show yourself."
Silence.
Then another figure stepped from behind the stone pillars.
Vanessa.
She held a suppressed pistol against Dr. Levin's head.
Sarah gasped.
"You..."
Vanessa smiled.
"I told you."
"I always finish what I start."
Bella immediately hid behind Sarah.
Vanessa noticed.
"Come here, sweetheart."
Bella shook her head.
"No."
Vanessa sighed.
"You've become much braver."
Arthur stepped forward.
"Let him go."
Vanessa pressed the pistol harder against Dr. Levin.
"Drop your gun."
Arthur didn't move.
"I said..."
"...drop it."
Slowly...
Arthur placed his pistol on the floor.
Colonel Reeves did the same.
Then the operators.
One by one.
Weapons clattered across the stone floor.
David frowned.
"What are you doing?"
Vanessa smiled without looking at him.
"Improvising."
David's expression darkened.
"That wasn't the agreement."
She laughed.
"You still think you're in charge?"
Jonathan suddenly understood.
"Oh, God..."
Arthur looked toward him.
"What?"
Jonathan whispered,
"David never controlled this operation."
Everyone turned toward Vanessa.
She smiled.
"I told Arthur once..."
"...I was fixing this family."
She slowly lowered the pistol.
"I wasn't lying."
Arthur stared.
"What are you talking about?"
Vanessa reached into her pocket.
She removed a small gold signet ring.
Jonathan's face drained of color.
"No..."
David lowered his head.
Arthur frowned.
"What is that?"
Jonathan answered in a whisper.
"The founder's ring."
Arthur looked confused.
"My grandfather's?"
Jonathan nodded.
"There was only one."
Vanessa smiled.
"There were two."
She slipped the ring onto her finger.
It fit perfectly.
Then she looked directly at Arthur.
"You've spent two years believing I wanted your fortune."
Arthur remained silent.
"I never cared about your money."
"Then what do you want?"
Vanessa's smile slowly disappeared.
"My name..."
She paused.
"...isn't Vanessa Carlisle."
Arthur's heartbeat quickened.
"My real name..."
She looked toward Jonathan.
"...is Vanessa Sterling."
Silence.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Jonathan's knees gave out.
Impossible.
Arthur whispered,
"Sterling?"
Vanessa nodded.
"The daughter your grandfather erased."
Jonathan looked at her with horror.
"No..."
She smiled coldly.
"My mother was your father's older sister."
Arthur's mind reeled.
"My father never had a sister."
"He did."
Jonathan whispered.
"Our father disowned her."
Arthur looked between them.
"Why?"
Vanessa answered herself.
"Because she married the wrong man."
She slowly pointed toward David.
"My father."
Jonathan closed his eyes.
Everything finally made sense.
The hidden hatred.
The decades of revenge.
The Archive.
Emily's murder.
Bella.
Sarah.
Everything traced back to one decision made a generation earlier.
Vanessa looked calmly at Arthur.
"You inherited the Sterling empire."
"My mother inherited nothing."
"So I came back..."
"...to take everything your family stole."
Arthur shook his head.
"So you murdered Emily?"
For the first time...
Vanessa's confidence faltered.
She looked away.
"I didn't mean to."
Arthur stared.
"What?"
"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."
The room became perfectly still.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Emily found me with the Archive."
"I only wanted the journal."
"She fought me."
"She grabbed the steering wheel."
David shouted,
"Vanessa!"
She ignored him.
"The gun..."
Her voice broke.
"...went off."
Arthur felt every muscle in his body lock.
Emily hadn't died in a simple crash.
She had been fighting for her life inside the moving SUV.
Vanessa whispered through tears,
"The crash happened afterward."
Arthur looked at her.
His voice was empty.
"You killed her."
Vanessa slowly nodded.
One tear rolled down her cheek.
"I've heard that sentence in my nightmares..."
"...every night for two years."
Before anyone could react—
A loud alarm suddenly blared throughout the vault.
One of Reeves' operators shouted,
"Colonel!"
Reeves looked at the tactical display.
His face went rigid.
"They're here."
Arthur frowned.
"Who?"
Reeves slowly looked toward the sealed tunnel entrance.
"The people Vanessa was running from."
Vanessa's eyes widened in genuine fear.
"No..."
For the first time...
She looked terrified.
A deafening explosion shook the mountain beneath the mansion.
The stone ceiling cracked.
Dust rained down.
Then an electronic voice echoed through hidden speakers—
SECONDARY CONTAINMENT BREACHED.
OMEGA TEAM HAS ENTERED THE FACILITY.
Colonel Reeves whispered only one sentence.
May you like
"We're all too late."
Then every light in the vault went out.
