Chapter 10: The Ghost Protocol

Heavy boots pounded through the underground tunnel.

Not hurried.

Measured.

Disciplined.

The sound echoed closer with military precision.

Arthur instinctively stepped in front of Bella.

Sarah wrapped both arms around the little girl.

Jonathan's face had gone completely pale.

He whispered only two words.

"They found us."

The mechanical voice echoed once more through hidden speakers.

TARGET CONFIRMED.

SECURE THE PACKAGE.

The head of security raised his pistol.

"They're almost here."

Arthur looked toward the reinforced vault door.

"Positions."

The guards spread out.

Sarah crouched beside the steel safe with Bella hidden behind her.

Dr. Levin quietly removed Bella's burned hair ribbon and wrapped it around the little girl's wrist.

Bella looked confused.

"If we get separated..."

His voice trembled.

"...don't take this off."

Bella nodded.

Arthur noticed.

His stomach tightened.

Nobody was preparing for a rescue anymore.

They were preparing for survival.

Outside the vault...

The footsteps stopped.

Complete silence followed.

Then—

A calm male voice came through the thick steel door.

"Arthur."

Arthur froze.

He recognized the voice.

Chief Daniel Morris.

"It's over."

Arthur didn't answer.

"We've secured the mansion."

"Open the door."

Jonathan shook his head immediately.

"No."

Arthur looked at him.

"That's Morris."

Jonathan lowered his voice.

"Listen."

Everyone held their breath.

No police radios.

No officers giving commands.

No movement.

Only silence.

Jonathan whispered,

"A tactical team never approaches this quietly."

Arthur slowly lowered his pistol.

Something wasn't right.

Morris spoke again.

"Arthur."

"We know Sarah Mitchell is with you."

"She is considered armed and extremely dangerous."

Sarah stared at Arthur in disbelief.

"What?"

Morris continued.

"She murdered your surveillance technician."

"She assaulted your fiancée."

"She organized the attack tonight."

Arthur's eyes turned to Sarah.

She looked horrified.

"I swear—"

Arthur raised one hand.

"I know."

Without hesitation.

Without doubt.

"I know you didn't."

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

For the first time since entering Sterling Mansion...

Someone powerful had believed her without demanding proof.

Outside...

Chief Morris's voice hardened.

"Arthur."

"If you protect her..."

"...you become an accessory."

Arthur stepped toward the vault door.

Then smiled.

It wasn't a warm smile.

It was the smile he wore during hostile corporate takeovers.

"The warrant."

Silence.

"You forgot something."

Arthur continued.

"If you're conducting an arrest inside my private residence..."

"...show me the warrant."

No answer.

Jonathan nodded slowly.

"They don't have one."

Arthur's expression became colder.

"They're improvising."

Three miles away...

Vanessa stood inside the abandoned riverside warehouse.

Several television screens displayed live security feeds from Sterling Mansion.

She watched Arthur refuse to open the vault.

A man entered behind her.

Expensive Italian suit.

No tie.

Mid-fifties.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

Unlike the hired mercenaries...

Everyone in the room stood when he entered.

Even Vanessa.

"You disappointed me."

She lowered her eyes.

"Bella remembered."

"I know."

Arthur found the second Archive."

"I know."

"He has Emily's evidence."

The man smiled faintly.

"I know."

Vanessa finally looked up.

"You don't seem worried."

"I'm not."

He walked calmly toward the largest monitor.

Arthur appeared on the screen.

Still standing before the vault.

Still protecting Sarah and Bella.

The man studied him quietly.

"He finally looks like his father."

Vanessa frowned.

"What now?"

The man folded his hands behind his back.

"Phase Four."

One of the mercenaries hesitated.

"Sir..."

"We haven't eliminated Bella."

The silver-haired man looked at him.

"We don't need to."

The room fell silent.

"What?"

The man's smile widened.

"We only need Arthur..."

"...to believe she isn't his daughter."

Vanessa stared.

"You never told me that."

"You weren't supposed to know."

Back inside the vault...

Arthur walked toward the steel safe.

The leather journal.

Emily's letter.

The videotape labeled THE TRUTH ABOUT BELLA.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

Jonathan spoke quietly.

"Arthur..."

"I think your father wanted you to watch the tape last."

Arthur looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because once you do..."

"...nothing in your life will ever be the same."

Sarah stepped closer.

"Maybe we should start with Emily's letter."

Arthur nodded.

He picked up the thick sealed envelope marked:

OPEN ONLY IF EMILY DIES.

His hands trembled as he broke the seal.

Inside were several pages.

Emily's familiar handwriting.

Arthur began reading silently.

After only three lines...

He stopped breathing.

Sarah watched his face lose all color.

"What is it?"

Arthur couldn't answer.

His lips moved.

No sound came out.

Jonathan gently took the pages.

His own expression changed almost instantly.

"Oh..."

He whispered.

"No..."

Sarah's heartbeat quickened.

"What does it say?"

Jonathan looked at Arthur.

"I don't think..."

Arthur interrupted him.

"Read it."

Jonathan hesitated.

Arthur repeated himself.

"Read it."

The older man swallowed.

Then read aloud.

Arthur, if you're reading this, it means I couldn't protect Bella anymore.

Everything I told you about the Archive is true.

But there is one truth I couldn't tell you while I was alive.

I lied to you on the day Bella was born.

The room became perfectly still.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Jonathan continued.

I didn't lie because I stopped loving you.

I lied because your father begged me to.

He said if anyone ever discovered the truth, Bella would spend her entire life being hunted.

Sarah instinctively held Bella tighter.

Jonathan's voice grew quieter.

Arthur...

Whatever happens next...

Remember this one thing.

You have always been Bella's father in every way that matters.

Arthur slowly opened his eyes.

His voice was barely audible.

"What..."

"...does that mean?"

Before Jonathan could continue—

BANG!

The reinforced vault door shook violently.

Another impact followed.

Someone outside had brought explosives.

Metal groaned under the pressure.

The head of security shouted,

"They're breaching!"

Arthur folded Emily's letter and slipped it inside his jacket.

"No more waiting."

He picked up the videotape labeled THE TRUTH ABOUT BELLA.

"If this tape answers everything..."

"...we watch it now."

Jonathan looked toward the shaking vault door.

"We don't have time."

Arthur's eyes never left the old videotape.

"We don't have time..."

"...not to."

The emergency projector in the vault hummed to life.

Arthur inserted the tape.

Static filled the screen.

A date appeared.

Recorded: Eight Days Before Emily Sterling's Death.

The image flickered.

Emily Sterling appeared on the screen.

She looked exhausted.

Her eyes were red from crying.

She looked directly into the camera.

Then she spoke the sentence that shattered Arthur's world.

"Arthur..."

"If you're watching this..."

"...Bella isn't the child you think she is."

At that exact moment—

The vault door exploded inward.

Blinding light flooded the room.

Black-clad tactical operators stormed inside.

Laser sights swept across the chamber.

One command echoed through the smoke.

"Nobody move!"

Then every operator lowered their weapons simultaneously...

Not toward Arthur.

Not toward Sarah.

Not toward Jonathan.

May you like

Every rifle...

Locked onto Bella.
