Chapter 2: The Key That Changed Everything

Vanessa ran.

The click of her designer heels echoed through the bedroom as she rushed toward the hallway.

She had taken only three steps before Arthur's voice stopped her.

"Vanessa."

He didn't raise his voice.

He didn't need to.

She froze with one hand gripping the bedroom door.

The room fell into complete silence.

Arthur walked toward her slowly.

His polished shoes crossed the hardwood floor with deliberate precision.

When he stopped beside her, he didn't look angry.

He looked curious.

That unsettled Vanessa far more than rage ever could.

"Why are you leaving?" he asked.

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"I think everyone needs to calm down."

Arthur's eyes drifted to the diamond pendant around her neck.

"You've been wearing that necklace for almost a year."

She instinctively touched it.

"It was a gift."

"From whom?"

"You."

Arthur's gaze never left the pendant.

"No."

The single word drained the color from her face.

"I've never seen that necklace before."

Sarah noticed Bella trembling again.

The little girl buried her face against Sarah's shoulder but refused to let go of the tiny silver key hanging around her neck.

Arthur noticed both.

He looked back at Vanessa.

"Take it off."

Her fingers tightened around the pendant.

"Arthur..."

"Take."

"It."

She hesitated.

For the first time since Sarah had entered the Sterling mansion six months earlier, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.

Slowly, she unclasped the necklace.

Arthur accepted it without another word.

He turned the pendant over in his hand.

It appeared to be an ordinary diamond surrounded by white gold.

Elegant.

Expensive.

Nothing unusual.

Until he pressed his thumb against the back.

Click.

A hidden compartment sprang open.

Sarah gasped.

Inside the pendant was a tiny folded photograph.

Arthur unfolded it carefully.

The paper had yellowed with age.

His breathing stopped.

It was an old family picture.

Arthur.

His late wife, Emily.

Baby Bella.

Taken on Bella's first birthday.

Arthur stared at the photograph.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

"Where did you get this?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"I... found it."

"Where?"

"In storage."

Arthur's expression remained unreadable.

"The original disappeared the week Emily died."

Vanessa didn't answer.

"The police searched for it."

Still nothing.

Arthur slowly folded the photograph and slipped it back inside the pendant.

"I asked you a question."

"I don't remember."

"You remember."

She looked away.

Sarah felt Bella gripping her apron tighter.

The child wouldn't stop staring at the pendant.

Dr. Levin arrived before anyone spoke again.

The family physician hurried upstairs carrying a leather medical case.

"What happened?"

Arthur stepped aside.

"My daughter needs to be examined."

Dr. Levin approached Bella gently.

"Hello, sweetheart."

Bella didn't respond.

Sarah carefully placed her on the velvet chair.

The little girl refused to release Sarah's hand.

"It's okay," Sarah whispered.

"I'm staying."

Dr. Levin examined the burn in silence.

His expression darkened.

He gently separated the damaged strands.

The smell of scorched hair still lingered.

Finally, he looked at Arthur.

"This wasn't accidental."

Vanessa's head snapped up.

"What?"

Dr. Levin pointed toward Bella's scalp.

"If someone briefly touched a curling iron to moving hair, the damage would be uneven."

He paused.

"This section received continuous heat."

Arthur folded his arms.

"For how long?"

"Several seconds."

Sarah closed her eyes.

Exactly what she had said.

Dr. Levin continued.

"The burn pattern indicates the iron remained clamped in one position."

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"That's impossible."

"I've treated thermal injuries for thirty-two years."

The doctor met her eyes.

"It isn't impossible."

"It's obvious."

Arthur remained silent.

His silence frightened Vanessa more with every passing second.

She suddenly pointed at Sarah.

"She could have done it herself."

Sarah stared at her.

"What?"

"You admitted touching the curling iron."

"I knocked it away from you."

"No one saw that."

"I did."

Everyone turned.

Mr. Collins stood near the doorway.

Vanessa looked at him in disbelief.

"You were outside."

"I entered before security."

"You never said anything."

"You never asked."

Arthur looked at his longtime house manager.

"What exactly did you see?"

Mr. Collins took a slow breath.

"I saw Miss Sarah holding Bella."

"I saw Miss Carlisle standing beside the bathtub."

"I saw the curling iron on the floor."

Arthur nodded once.

"What happened before that?"

"I don't know."

Vanessa smiled again.

"There."

"Nobody knows."

Mr. Collins wasn't finished.

"But..."

Arthur waited.

"I've worked here since you were eleven years old."

"I also watched Mrs. Emily Sterling raise Bella."

His eyes shifted toward the child.

"I have never seen Bella willingly hold anyone..."

"...except Mrs. Emily."

He looked at Sarah.

"Until today."

Sarah's throat tightened.

Bella still hadn't let go of her hand.

Not once.

Vanessa scoffed.

"She's traumatized."

"Exactly."

Mr. Collins replied quietly.

"And traumatized children don't usually run toward the person hurting them."

The room became painfully still.

Arthur slowly looked at Bella.

Then at Sarah.

His thoughts were impossible to read.

A sharp ringtone shattered the silence.

Arthur answered immediately.

"Yes."

His expression changed.

"When?"

Another pause.

"I'll take it."

He ended the call.

Vanessa forced a smile.

"Business?"

Arthur looked directly at her.

"No."

"The forensic laboratory."

Sarah frowned.

"Forensic?"

Arthur reached into his pocket.

He removed the tiny silver key Bella had been clutching.

"I've been searching for the lock this belongs to."

Vanessa's breathing became noticeably faster.

Arthur noticed.

"So have several other people."

"What are you talking about?" she asked.

Arthur ignored the question.

He turned toward Mr. Collins.

"Bring me Emily's personal inventory."

Collins hesitated.

"Sir..."

"Now."

The old house manager left immediately.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Arthur, Emily has been dead for two years."

"I know exactly how long my wife has been dead."

His voice was calm.

Dangerously calm.

Sarah had the unsettling feeling that Arthur was assembling pieces of a puzzle he hadn't even realized existed.

Dr. Levin gently finished treating Bella's burn.

"There will be some hair loss."

"But fortunately, the skin wasn't burned deeply."

Sarah exhaled in relief.

Bella looked up at the doctor.

Then slowly signed something with trembling fingers.

Dr. Levin blinked.

"You remember sign language?"

Sarah smiled faintly.

"I've been teaching her."

The doctor nodded.

Bella signed again.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Dr. Levin's expression changed.

"What did she say?" Arthur asked.

The doctor looked uncertain.

"I may be mistaken."

"What?"

"She signed..."

He hesitated.

"'The bad lady wears Mommy.'"

Every eye turned toward Vanessa.

She shook her head violently.

"This is insane."

"She's confused."

Arthur looked at Bella.

"What does that mean?"

Bella reached toward the pendant in Arthur's hand.

Then toward Vanessa.

Then she covered both of her own eyes.

Arthur stared at the gesture.

Sarah suddenly understood.

Her blood ran cold.

"Mr. Sterling..."

Arthur looked at her.

"I think Bella is trying to tell us..."

Sarah struggled to breathe.

"...that she saw Vanessa wearing that necklace..."

"...the night her mother died."

The words crashed through the room.

Vanessa's knees nearly gave out.

Arthur didn't move.

He simply watched her.

For the first time in years...

He wasn't looking at his fiancée.

He was looking at a suspect.

Just then, Mr. Collins hurried back into the room carrying an old leather document box.

"It's here, sir."

Arthur accepted the box.

He inserted Bella's tiny silver key into the rusted lock.

It fit perfectly.

Click.

The lock opened.

Inside lay a velvet pouch.

A sealed envelope addressed in Emily Sterling's handwriting.

And beneath it...

A black USB flash drive with a handwritten label.

FOR ARTHUR.

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME... DON'T TRUST VANESSA.

Arthur's hands began to shake.

May you like

For the first time that day...

So did Vanessa's.
