Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew the Mansion

"Find her!"
Arthur's command echoed through the darkened mansion.
The head of security grabbed his flashlight.
"Seal every entrance!"
"Nobody leaves the estate!"
The emergency backup lights flickered on one by one, bathing the hallways in a dim amber glow.
Outside, luxury sedans continued pulling into the circular driveway.
The first guests had no idea that, inside Sterling Mansion, panic had already replaced elegance.
Sarah instinctively pulled Bella behind her.
The little girl clutched Sarah's apron with one hand and the silver key with the other.
Arthur turned to one of the guards.
"Take Miss Mitchell and Bella somewhere safe."
"No."
Bella's tiny fingers tightened around Sarah.
She shook her head violently.
Arthur noticed.
"So did Sarah."
"She's afraid to leave me," Sarah said quietly.
Arthur looked at his daughter.
Bella refused to look away from Vanessa's empty spot near the door.
Almost as if she expected the woman to return.
Arthur made his decision.
"They stay with me."
The head of security spoke into his radio.
"Team One, cover the west wing."
"Team Two, check the gardens."
"Team Three, secure the surveillance room."
Static answered.
Then—
"Sir..."
The voice sounded breathless.
"The surveillance room has been destroyed."
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
"What do you mean destroyed?"
"The servers have been smashed."
"The backup drives are gone."
"And..."
The guard hesitated.
"The technician is unconscious."
Arthur didn't wait.
"Collins."
"Yes, sir."
"Stay with Bella."
He looked at Sarah.
"You too."
"I'm coming."
"No."
Sarah met his eyes.
"If Vanessa took the footage, she'll come back for Bella."
Arthur didn't answer immediately.
He hated admitting she was right.
Finally he nodded once.
"You don't leave Bella's side."
"I won't."
Together, Arthur, Sarah, the head of security, and two guards hurried downstairs.
The mansion looked completely different.
Only minutes earlier it had been preparing for a glamorous charity gala.
Now servants stood frozen in frightened groups.
Florists abandoned half-finished arrangements.
Champagne towers reflected the flashing emergency lights.
Outside the enormous front windows, reporters were already gathering.
Inside, fear spread faster than gossip.
They reached the surveillance room.
The reinforced steel door hung open.
Arthur stepped inside.
The smell hit him immediately.
Burned plastic.
Scorched wiring.
Broken electronics.
Every monitor had been smashed.
Glass covered the floor.
Computer towers had been ripped apart.
Someone hadn't simply stolen evidence.
Someone had wanted to make sure nothing could ever be recovered.
The technician lay unconscious beside his desk.
A paramedic checked his pulse.
"He's alive."
"What happened?" Arthur asked.
The paramedic looked up.
"Blunt force trauma."
"He was struck from behind."
Arthur crouched beside the technician.
Blood stained the back of the man's uniform.
On the floor nearby lay a heavy bronze horse statue.
One of the decorative pieces from the hallway.
Arthur slowly stood.
"Fingerprint it."
"Immediately."
"Yes, sir."
Sarah looked around the ruined room.
Something didn't feel right.
She had cleaned this room dozens of times.
Something was missing.
Not the servers.
Not the monitors.
Something else.
Her eyes moved toward the far wall.
She frowned.
"Mr. Sterling..."
Arthur turned.
"The clock."
"What?"
"There used to be a clock there."
Everyone looked.
Only a clean square remained on the wall.
The antique grandfather clock that had stood there for years...
Was gone.
Collins suddenly spoke.
"That wasn't an ordinary clock."
Arthur looked at him.
"It belonged to your father."
"I know."
"It was never connected to electricity."
Arthur frowned.
"So why steal it?"
Sarah slowly walked toward the empty space.
She knelt beside the wall.
Something metallic reflected beneath the baseboard.
She reached down.
It was a tiny brass screw.
Freshly removed.
She looked upward.
Then placed her hand against the wall.
"Hollow."
Arthur stepped closer.
"What?"
"This wall..."
She knocked gently.
"...it's hollow."
The head of security grabbed a flashlight.
Arthur examined the panel carefully.
The wood grain didn't quite match the surrounding wall.
He pressed one corner.
Nothing.
Then Bella walked forward.
Everyone watched silently.
She still held the silver key.
Without hesitation, she reached toward one carved section of the wooden panel.
She pressed a tiny flower carved into the frame.
Click.
The wall shifted.
Sarah gasped.
A narrow hidden passage slowly opened.
Cold air drifted out.
No one spoke.
Arthur stared into the darkness.
"I've lived here for fifteen years."
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"I never knew this existed."
Collins looked embarrassed.
"Neither did I."
The head of security raised his pistol.
"I'll go first."
Arthur stopped him.
"No."
"Sir—"
"If Vanessa went inside..."
Arthur's expression became harder than stone.
"...this is my family."
"I'm going."
Without waiting, he stepped into the passage.
Sarah immediately followed.
"Miss Mitchell—"
"I'm not leaving Bella."
Bella refused to let go of Sarah's hand anyway.
The narrow corridor stretched beneath the mansion.
Dust covered the floor.
Cobwebs clung to the ceiling.
No one had walked here in years.
Or so it seemed.
Arthur suddenly stopped.
The dust ahead had footprints.
Fresh footprints.
High heels.
Vanessa.
Sarah knelt.
"They're recent."
Arthur nodded.
"They're heading deeper."
The passage twisted beneath the estate before ending at a small underground room.
The heavy steel door stood open.
Inside...
The room was almost empty.
One desk.
One chair.
One old safe.
Its door hung wide open.
Empty.
Arthur looked around slowly.
"What was kept here?"
No one answered.
Then Collins spoke quietly.
"Your father..."
Arthur looked over.
"...used to call this the Archive."
"The Archive?"
"He said it contained everything that could destroy the Sterling family."
Sarah's heart skipped.
"Everything?"
"He never let anyone inside."
Arthur stared at the empty safe.
Someone had reached it first.
Someone who knew this room existed.
Sarah suddenly noticed Bella.
The little girl wasn't looking at the safe.
She was staring at the floor beneath the desk.
Her eyes widened.
She tugged gently on Sarah's sleeve.
"What is it, sweetheart?"
Bella pointed.
Sarah knelt and reached underneath.
Her fingers touched a small object.
She pulled it free.
A black smartphone.
Its screen was cracked.
Arthur took it carefully.
He pressed the power button.
The battery was almost dead.
One percent.
The lock screen lit up.
Everyone froze.
The wallpaper showed Emily Sterling smiling while holding Bella.
Arthur's breathing stopped.
"It was Emily's phone..."
he whispered.
"The police never found it."
Before anyone could speak—
The phone vibrated.
One new voicemail.
Received...
Thirty seconds ago.
Arthur stared at the screen.
The sender ID displayed only one word.
UNKNOWN.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then came a woman's trembling voice.
Not Vanessa.
Not Sarah.
Not Emily.
A stranger.
"If you're hearing this..."
she whispered.
"...Vanessa found the Archive."
A sharp crash echoed in the background.
The woman gasped.
"Arthur..."
Her breathing became frantic.
"Don't trust the police."
"Someone inside the investigation..."
"...helped kill your wife."
The recording cut off.
The phone screen went black.
Battery dead.
Before anyone could recover—
A gunshot exploded somewhere above them.
Then another.
The head of security spoke urgently into his radio.
"Sir!"
"The mansion is under attack!"
Arthur looked toward the tunnel leading back upstairs.
His eyes turned cold.
"This was never about the gala."
May you like
"No," Sarah whispered.
"It was about making sure the truth never survived."
