Chapter 7: The Man Who Called Arthur "Son"

Rain hammered against the mansion windows.

Blue and red emergency lights flashed across the marble walls like restless ghosts.

From the rooftop, Arthur watched the unmarked black SUV stop beneath the front entrance.

It wasn't a police vehicle.

It wasn't registered to Sterling Heavy Industries.

Yet every officer stepped aside the moment it arrived.

The rear door opened.

A silver-haired man in a charcoal suit stepped out.

Nearly seventy.

Tall.

Perfect posture.

Black leather gloves despite the warm summer rain.

He carried no umbrella.

The rain didn't seem to bother him.

Neither did the dozens of armed officers surrounding the mansion.

Arthur frowned.

"Who is he?"

The head of security looked down from the rooftop.

"I've... never seen him before."

Arthur didn't answer.

Something about the man's calmness unsettled him.

He looked less like a visitor...

...and more like someone returning home.

Inside the foyer...

Chief Daniel Morris entered first.

He was the city's Chief of Police and had known Arthur for nearly ten years.

"Arthur."

He extended his hand.

"I'm sorry this happened."

Arthur looked at the offered hand.

Then at the officers quietly spreading throughout his mansion.

He didn't shake it.

Instead, he asked one question.

"Who authorized that man to enter my property?"

Chief Morris glanced toward the silver-haired stranger.

For the first time since entering the mansion...

He looked uncomfortable.

"He's here to assist."

"Assist with what?"

"The investigation."

Arthur's voice became colder.

"I wasn't informed."

"It came from higher up."

"Higher than the Chief of Police?"

Morris hesitated.

"...Yes."

Before Arthur could speak again, the silver-haired man walked into the foyer.

Every officer straightened instinctively.

No introductions were made.

The stranger stopped only a few feet from Arthur.

For several long seconds...

He simply studied Arthur's face.

His eyes lingered on Arthur's jawline.

Then his shoulders.

Finally...

His eyes softened almost imperceptibly.

"You've become exactly what I expected."

Arthur's eyebrows drew together.

"I'm sorry?"

The man smiled politely.

"You look just like your mother."

Silence.

Arthur's heart skipped.

"My mother died when I was twelve."

"I know."

The stranger nodded once.

"I attended her funeral."

Arthur stared.

"I've never seen you before."

"No."

"You wouldn't have."

The man slowly removed one leather glove.

On the inside of his wrist was an old scar.

Arthur froze.

He knew that scar.

His father had one exactly like it.

When Arthur was a child, his father used to joke that they were "family marks."

Only two people had ever had them.

His father...

And—

No.

Impossible.

The stranger noticed Arthur staring.

He smiled sadly.

"I wondered if you'd remember."

Arthur's breathing became shallow.

"My father was an only child."

"So everyone believed."

Across the mansion...

Sarah sat beside Bella in Arthur's private office.

The little girl had finally fallen asleep against her shoulder.

Dr. Levin quietly packed away his medical supplies.

Sarah couldn't stop thinking about the sniper.

Or the warning Arthur had received.

The USB suddenly felt impossibly important.

She slipped her hand inside her apron pocket.

Still there.

Safe.

Then she noticed something strange.

Bella's tiny hand was clenched tightly around something.

Carefully, Sarah opened her fingers.

A folded photograph.

Not the same one from Vanessa's pendant.

A different one.

This one showed Emily Sterling standing beside another woman.

The two women were laughing.

Behind them stood Sterling Mansion.

Sarah turned the picture over.

Written on the back...

If Arthur ever finds this... tell him to trust Eleanor.

Sarah frowned.

"Eleanor?"

Dr. Levin looked over.

His face changed instantly.

"Where did Bella get that?"

"It was in her pocket."

The doctor's expression darkened.

"I know that woman."

Sarah looked back at the photograph.

The smiling woman beside Emily looked familiar.

Elegant.

Dark-haired.

Around fifty.

"Who is she?"

Dr. Levin lowered his voice.

"Eleanor Brooks."

"Emily's attorney."

Sarah blinked.

"I thought Sterling Industries had lawyers."

"They did."

"But Eleanor handled Emily's personal affairs."

"What happened to her?"

The doctor hesitated.

"She disappeared."

"When?"

"The day after Emily died."

Meanwhile...

Vanessa drove through the rain with trembling hands.

She had abandoned the stolen SUV three miles from the estate.

Now she sat inside a small warehouse near the river.

Three armed men waited inside.

One of them closed the garage door.

"You failed."

Vanessa glared at him.

"The child remembered."

The room fell silent.

The oldest man stepped forward.

Gray beard.

Military posture.

Cold blue eyes.

"So."

"It finally happened."

Vanessa looked exhausted.

"She spoke."

"What did she say?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"...She remembers the gunshot."

The old man's face hardened.

"And Arthur?"

"He found Emily's letter."

The man closed his eyes.

For several seconds...

No one moved.

Finally he spoke.

"Accelerate Phase Three."

Vanessa frowned.

"What about Arthur?"

"He was never the target."

She looked confused.

"What?"

The old man leaned toward her.

"The target..."

"...has always been Bella."

Vanessa's blood ran cold.

"You told me we only needed the evidence."

"Plans change."

Vanessa took a step backward.

"No."

The old man's eyes narrowed.

"That wasn't a request."

Back at Sterling Mansion...

Arthur and the silver-haired stranger stood alone inside the library.

Chief Morris had ordered everyone else outside.

The stranger slowly examined the room.

His fingers brushed across an old bookshelf.

"I built this."

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"My father built this house."

The man smiled.

"No."

"He inherited it."

Arthur's patience snapped.

"Who are you?"

The stranger looked directly into his eyes.

"My name..."

He paused.

"...is Jonathan Hale."

Arthur had never heard the name.

"I don't know you."

"No."

Jonathan nodded.

"But I knew your mother."

"And your father."

Arthur folded his arms.

"Then explain why every police officer here obeys you."

Jonathan didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

He removed a weathered leather wallet.

Inside was an old photograph.

He placed it on Arthur's desk.

Arthur picked it up.

His hands began shaking.

The photograph showed two young men.

One was unmistakably Arthur's father.

The other...

Jonathan.

Both stood in front of Sterling Mansion.

Both smiled proudly.

Across the bottom someone had written in faded blue ink:

Brothers forever.

Arthur slowly looked up.

"My father had a brother?"

Jonathan nodded.

"He did."

Arthur's voice became barely audible.

"My father told me he was alone."

"He lied."

"Why?"

Jonathan's expression filled with regret.

"Because someone wanted this family divided."

Before Arthur could ask another question—

Sarah burst into the library carrying Bella.

"Mr. Sterling!"

Arthur immediately stood.

"What happened?"

Sarah looked terrified.

She held out the photograph she had found in Bella's pocket.

"I think Emily left us another clue."

Arthur took the picture.

The moment he saw Eleanor Brooks...

Jonathan Hale's face drained of color.

He whispered one name.

"...Eleanor."

Arthur looked up sharply.

"You know her?"

Jonathan didn't answer.

Instead...

He reached into his coat.

Very slowly.

The head of security instantly drew his weapon.

"Don't move!"

Jonathan ignored him.

He removed a small silver locket.

Opened it.

Inside was a picture of the same woman.

Twenty years younger.

He looked at Arthur with eyes full of sorrow.

"Eleanor Brooks..."

His voice broke.

"...was my daughter."

The room froze.

Before anyone could react—

BOOM!

A deafening explosion shook the entire mansion.

The library windows shattered inward.

Smoke and flames erupted from the east wing.

Emergency alarms screamed once again.

The head of security grabbed his radio.

"Fire!"

"No..."

A panicked guard shouted through the static.

May you like

"Worse!"

"They've planted bombs!"
