Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

Amy received the call at 6:12 in the morning.

She almost ignored it.

Then she saw the name.

Margaret Harrison.

For a moment, she considered letting it ring.

But she answered.

“Hello?”

“Amy.”

Margaret sounded exhausted.

“Are you safe?”

Amy frowned.

“Yes.”

“Are you alone?”

The question made Amy nervous.

“Why?”

A pause.

“Because there are things you need to know.”

Amy looked toward the bookstore window.

The ocean was calm.

But something inside her wasn’t.

“What things?”

Margaret took a breath.

“The ring.”

Amy froze.

“What about it?”

“It was never just a wedding ring.”

For the next twenty minutes, Margaret told Amy everything.

The Harrison family history.

The betrayal.

The hidden connection between their families.

The reason she had protected Amy from the beginning.

When the call ended, Amy sat completely still.

She had thought she knew why she married Daniel.

Because she loved him.

But now she wondered

had their lives been connected long before they met?

That afternoon, a black SUV stopped outside the bookstore.

Amy looked through the window.

Her heart raced.

A man stepped out.

Not Daniel.

Ethan.

She recognized him from the photo.

He entered slowly.

“Amy Harrison?”

She stood.

“Who are you?”

“Someone who should have told you the truth sooner.”

Amy’s expression hardened.

“I don’t know you.”

“You know my brother.”

“Daniel?”

Ethan nodded.

“I’m his brother.”

Amy frowned.

“Daniel never told me he had a brother.”

A bitter smile appeared.

“Daniel doesn’t tell people things that make him look bad.”

Amy crossed her arms.

“What do you want?”

Ethan looked around.

“To warn you.”

“About what?”

“Daniel.”

Amy’s face changed.

“Daniel isn’t the enemy you think.”

She laughed.

“That’s an interesting thing to say after everything.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“The person who destroyed your marriage is still close to him.”

“Vanessa?”

Ethan nodded.

“But not only her.”

Amy became quiet.

“What do you mean?”

Ethan looked directly at her.

“Someone in the Harrison family helped her.”

Amy’s stomach tightened.

“Who?”

Ethan hesitated.

Then said:

“Your husband’s mother.”

Amy stepped back.

“No.”

“That’s what Daniel said too.”

“Margaret loves me.”

“Maybe.”

Ethan looked away.

“But love and guilt can exist at the same time.”

Amy didn’t know what to believe anymore.

Before leaving, Ethan placed a small envelope on the counter.

“What is this?”

“Proof.”

“Of what?”

“The night you left.”

Amy opened it.

Inside was a printed email.

Sent from Margaret Harrison.

The subject line:

May you like

Amy Harrison Problem.

Amy’s hands began shaking.
