Chapter 6 - THE BROTHER WHO CAME BACK

Daniel found Ethan two days later.

Not through company records.

Not through private investigators.

Through a mistake.

Ethan wanted to be found.

That was obvious.

The abandoned warehouse on the edge of Brooklyn was almost empty.

Almost.

Daniel walked inside.

“Ethan.”

A man stepped from the shadows.

Older than Daniel remembered.

Tired.

Angry.

But still wearing the same bitter smile.

“Look at you.”

Ethan laughed.

“Still wearing expensive suits.”

Daniel stared.

“You sent me the photo.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because someone needed to tell you the truth.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You destroyed my family.”

Ethan smiled.

“Your family was already broken.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Explain.”

Ethan walked around him.

“Do you know why Dad chose you?”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“Why you got everything.”

“Because I worked for it.”

Ethan laughed.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The Daniel Harrison answer.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“You think everything is about effort.”

Daniel said nothing.

“Sometimes it’s about secrets.”

Ethan pulled out a folder.

And placed it on a table.

Daniel opened it.

His face changed.

Inside were documents.

Financial records.

Emails.

Private conversations.

And one name repeated over and over.

Vanessa Cole.

Daniel looked up.

“What is this?”

“Proof.”

“Of what?”

“That Vanessa didn’t enter your life by accident.”

Daniel flipped through the pages.

His stomach turned.

“She was hired?”

“Yes.”

“By who?”

Ethan looked at him.

“Your father.”

Daniel froze.

“My father died six years ago.”

“Exactly.”

Ethan explained everything.

Years ago, Harrison Freight had been struggling.

Daniel’s father had made secret agreements to protect the company.

One of those agreements involved powerful investors.

Investors who wanted Daniel controlled.

Successful.

Married to the right image.

A perfect businessman.

And Vanessa?

She was supposed to become part of that image.

“She was never just a woman you met.”

Ethan said.

“She was placed near you.”

Daniel stared at the documents.

“No.”

“You think she loved you?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because suddenly every memory felt different.

Every dinner.

Every conversation.

Every compliment.

“Why are you telling me this now?”

Ethan looked away.

“Because I found out something else.”

“What?”

“Vanessa wasn’t trying to steal you.”

Daniel waited.

“She was trying to steal the company.”

Meanwhile…

Amy sat in the bookstore reading a message from an unknown number.

Her hands went cold.

The message contained a photo.

A photo of Daniel and Vanessa.

Taken years ago.

Before Amy ever met Vanessa.

Underneath was one sentence:

You were never the first woman she betrayed.

Amy stared.

Because she realized something terrifying.
