Chapter 12 - THE LAST PROMISE

Amy had spent the entire night thinking.

About Daniel.

About Margaret.

About the baby.

About the future.

And she finally understood something.

Leaving was not enough.

Running away was not enough.

She needed answers.

Daniel arrived at the bookstore the next morning.

This time, Amy didn’t look away.

“Sit.”

He sat.

Two people who once shared everything now sat across from each other like strangers.

“I know about your mother,” Amy said.

Daniel nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

Amy studied him.

“For what?”

“For all of it.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Daniel looked down.

“I’m sorry I made you feel alone.”

Silence.

“I’m sorry I made you think you weren’t important.”

Another pause.

“I’m sorry I spent so much time proving I was successful that I forgot to prove I was your husband.”

Amy looked at him.

Those were the words she had wanted years ago.

But now they came from a man who had already lost her.

“I don’t need promises, Daniel.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Her voice became emotional.

“You always promised.”

Daniel looked hurt.

Amy continued.

“You promised anniversaries.”

“You promised vacations.”

“You promised you would change.”

She touched her stomach.

“But I believed those promises while you kept breaking them.”

Daniel had no response.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me today.”

Amy looked surprised.

Because that was the first thing Daniel said that sounded different.

“I’m not asking you to come home.”

“Then what do you want?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I want to become someone our child can respect.”

Amy’s eyes softened.

Only slightly.

Then the door opened.

Ethan walked in.

Daniel immediately stood.

“What are you doing here?”

Ethan ignored him.

He looked at Amy.

“It’s time you know the final truth.”

Amy frowned.

“What truth?”

Ethan placed a folder on the table.

“The reason Vanessa wanted this marriage destroyed.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Vanessa.

Standing beside Richard Harrison.

Daniel’s dead father.

The date was twenty years earlier.

Amy stared.

Daniel whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Daniel.

“It’s the truth.”

“Who is she?”

Ethan answered:

“Your father’s daughter.”

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the woman who destroyed their marriage

was not just an outsider.

She was part of the Harrison family.
