Chapter 2 - THE SECRET HE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO MISS

Daniel Harrison stared at the message on his phone.
For a man who had negotiated billion-dollar contracts, survived hostile investors, and sat across from some of the most powerful people in America, he suddenly felt completely powerless.
One sentence.
One notification.
And his entire world shifted.
Mr. Harrison, we need to discuss your wifeâs pregnancy immediately.
Pregnancy.
The word burned through his mind.
He looked at his mother.
Then at the ring in her hand.
Then back at the phone.
âNo.â
The word escaped his mouth before he even realized he had spoken.
Margaretâs expression changed.
âDanielâŠâ
âNo.â
He shook his head slowly.
âThatâs not possible.â
His mother stared at him.
âWhy?â
Because Daniel knew the answer.
Because deep down, he knew exactly why.
Amy had tried to tell him.
He just never gave her the chance.
Three months earlier.
Daniel had been sitting in his office on the thirty-second floor of Harrison Tower.
His assistant, Emily, had placed a folder on his desk.
âYour schedule for tomorrow.â
Daniel didnât look up.
âAnything important?â
Emily hesitated.
There was only one person in the company who could make Emily hesitate.
Daniel noticed.
âWhat?â
She looked at the calendar.
âYour wife called.â
Daniel finally looked up.
âAmy?â
âYes.â
âWhat did she need?â
Emily glanced at the note.
âShe asked if you were free Friday afternoon.â
Daniel checked his phone.
âFriday?â
âYes.â
He sighed.
âI have the investor meeting.â
âI know.â
âMove dinner instead.â
Emily looked uncomfortable.
âSir, you already moved dinner twice this month.â
Daniel leaned back.
âEmily.â
âYes?â
âMy company employs four thousand people.â
âI know.â
âEvery decision I make affects thousands of families.â
Emily nodded.
âBut your wife is one person.â
Daniel frowned.
âThatâs not fair.â
Emily didnât answer.
Because she knew something Daniel didnât.
The people who loved him had stopped asking for his time.
They had started hoping for whatever was left.
When Daniel arrived home that night, Amy was sitting on the balcony.
Their apartment overlooked Central Park.
It was the kind of place people dreamed about.
But Amy had learned something painful.
A beautiful home could still feel empty.
âYouâre late,â she said.
Daniel removed his jacket.
âI know.â
âYou said youâd be home at seven.â
âI got stuck.â
Amy nodded.
She didnât argue.
That bothered him more.
Usually Amy would ask questions.
Usually she would smile and say:
âYou promised.â
Usually she would fight for his attention.
But that nightâŠ
She was quiet.
Daniel walked closer.
âAre you okay?â
Amy looked at him.
For one second, he almost saw it.
The truth.
The secret.
The words she was desperate to say.
But his phone rang.
Daniel looked down.
The name on the screen appeared.
Vanessa.
Amy saw it.
Of course she did.
She always saw everything.
Daniel answered.
âHello?â
Amy looked away.
She didnât hear Vanessaâs voice.
She didnât need to.
She only watched Danielâs expression change.
His tired face softened.
His eyes became warmer.
A smile appeared.
A smile Amy hadnât seen directed at her in months.
âIâll call you later,â Daniel said.
Then he hung up.
Amy looked at him.
âWho was that?â
âWork.â
She nodded.
âRight.â
And that was the moment Daniel should have noticed.
The woman who used to question everything had stopped asking.
Now, standing inside the ballroom, Daniel finally understood.
Amy wasnât leaving because of one mistake.
She was leaving because she had been alone while married.
âWhere is she?â he asked.
Margaret looked at him.
âI donât know.â
âYou let her leave?â
Margaretâs eyes hardened.
âDonât you dare make this my fault.â
Daniel froze.
His mother rarely raised her voice.
âYou want to know what happened?â
She stepped closer.
âYour wife stood in that ballroom watching the man she loved dance with another woman.â
Daniel opened his mouth.
âA dance?â
Margaret interrupted.
âNo.â
Her voice became colder.
âIt wasnât the dance.â
âThen what?â
âThe fact that she wasnât surprised.â
Those words hit harder than any accusation.
Daniel looked away.
Because he knew.
Amy had not looked shocked.
She had looked tired.
Like someone who had already lost hope.
âDaniel.â
Vanessaâs voice came from behind him.
He turned.
She was still wearing the same confident smile.
âWhat happened?â
Daniel stared at her.
For the first time, he didnât see the beautiful woman everyone admired.
He saw the person standing beside him when his wife walked away.
âDid you know?â
Vanessa frowned.
âKnow what?â
âThat Amy was pregnant?â
Silence.
Only for a second.
But Daniel noticed.
A tiny hesitation.
A tiny pause.
And suddenly, something inside him became cold.
âYou knew?â
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
âDanielâŠâ
âYou knew?â
Her expression changed.
âI thought she told you.â
Daniel stepped closer.
âWhen?â
Vanessa looked away.
âDaniel, please donât do this here.â
âWhen did you know my wife was pregnant?â
People nearby started looking.
The billionaire businessman.
The famous charity director.
The perfect pair.
Except nothing was perfect anymore.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
âShe came to the foundation office last week.â
Daniel froze.
âWhat?â
âShe needed to talk to you.â
âAbout the pregnancy?â
Vanessa didnât answer.
That was the answer.
Daniel felt sick.
âShe told you?â
Vanessa crossed her arms.
âShe was emotional.â
âWhat did you say?â
Vanessa looked offended.
âI told her you were under pressure.â
Daniel stared.
âAnd?â
âAnd that you needed someone who understood your lifestyle.â
The silence between them was terrifying.
Daniel understood.
The rumors.
The messages.
The late nights.
The secret meetings.
All of it.
He had spent months believing he was too busy to notice.
Now he realized someone else had been making sure he never noticed.
âYou lied to me.â
Vanessaâs face changed.
âExcuse me?â
âYou knew my wife was pregnant.â
âShe was going to leave anyway.â
Daniel stared.
âWhat did you say?â
Vanessa stepped closer.
âShe wasnât happy, Daniel.â
âShe was my wife.â
âAnd I was the person who was actually there.â
Daniel laughed once.
A bitter, broken laugh.
âDo you hear yourself?â
Vanessaâs confidence disappeared.
âDanielâŠâ
âNo.â
He stepped back.
âYou donât get to stand here and pretend you care about me.â
The cameras around them continued flashing.
The world was watching.
But Daniel no longer cared.
Because suddenly, the only person he wanted to see was gone.
Four hours later, Daniel stood outside their apartment.
The place was dark.
Too dark.
Usually Amy left a light on.
She always said:
âI donât like coming home to a dark house.â
Daniel unlocked the door.
âAmy?â
Nothing.
He walked inside.
Everything looked normal.
Her books were still on the shelf.
Her plants were still by the window.
Her favorite blanket was still on the couch.
But something was missing.
Her presence.
The silence felt different.
He walked into the bedroom.
On the nightstand was a small envelope.
His name was written on it.
Daniel.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside was the ultrasound picture.
And a handwritten note.
His eyes moved across the page.
We were going to tell you tonight.
Daniel stopped.
The word "we" destroyed him.
Not me.
Not I.
We.
He read the next line.
I wanted our baby to grow up knowing his father was excited to meet him.
Daniel closed his eyes.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Then he read the final sentence.
But I couldn't keep waiting for someone who was never coming home.
Daniel sat down.
For the first time in yearsâŠ
The man who always knew what to do had no idea what to do.
Then his phone rang.
It was his assistant.
âDaniel?â
âWhat?â
âWe found something.â
Daniel wiped his face.
âWhat?â
A pause.
âSecurity footage from the foundation office.â
âWhy?â
âBecause Vanessa wasnât telling the truth.â
Daniel stood up.
âWhat did you find?â
His assistantâs voice became serious.
âYour wife didnât just visit the office.â
A pause.
âShe was followed.â
Danielâs heart stopped.
âBy who?â
The answer came quietly.
âSomeone from your company.â
Daniel looked at Amyâs ultrasound picture.
And for the first timeâŠ
He realized this wasnât just about losing his wife.
May you like
Someone had been trying to destroy his family.
