Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO WALKED AWAY TWICE

Amy didn’t open the email immediately.

She was afraid.

Not because she didn’t want the truth.

Because she already knew the truth could hurt more than lies.

Finally, she clicked.

The message appeared.

Vanessa,

Daniel cannot know about Amy’s background.

She cannot know why this marriage happened.

Keep her away from the company.

If she discovers the truth, everything falls apart.

Margaret

Amy stopped breathing.

For several seconds, she could only stare.

The woman who had comforted her.

The woman who held her hand when she gave back the ring.

The woman who called her daughter.

Had been hiding something.

“No.”

Amy whispered.

She read it again.

Then again.

Maybe she was misunderstanding.

Maybe there was another explanation.

But there wasn’t.

That night, Daniel arrived in Newport.

He didn’t tell anyone.

He didn’t send security.

He didn’t call first.

He simply stood outside the bookstore.

Waiting.

When Amy saw him through the window…

her heart broke.

Because a part of her still wanted to run into his arms.

But another part remembered the ballroom.

The dance.

The silence.

The ring.

Daniel entered.

“Amy.”

She looked at him.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The question was simple.

But Daniel knew the answer mattered.

“Because I finally realized something.”

“What?”

“I spent years trying to build a future.”

He swallowed.

“And I destroyed the person I was supposed to build it with.”

Amy looked away.

“That’s a beautiful apology.”

Daniel felt the pain in her words.

“But?”

“But I don’t know if it changes anything.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“I know about the baby.”

Amy looked at him.

“I know.”

“I want to be there.”

She smiled sadly.

“You wanted many things.”

“Amy.”

“No.”

Her voice became stronger.

“I wanted you there before I left.”

Daniel looked down.

Because he had no defense.

Then Amy placed the email on the table.

Daniel saw Margaret’s name.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get this?”

“Ethan.”

Daniel froze.

“You talked to Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“Amy, you don’t understand.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I understand more than I ever have.”

Silence.

Daniel opened the email.

As he read, the color disappeared from his face.

“No…”

Amy watched him.

For the first time, she saw Daniel Harrison look completely broken.

Not like a businessman.

Not like a billionaire.

Just a son discovering his family had lied.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Emily.

He answered.

“What?”

Her voice was urgent.

“Daniel, you need to come back immediately.”

“Why?”

“The board discovered something.”

“What?”

A pause.

“Someone transferred ownership of several company assets.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who?”

Emily whispered:

“Your mother.”

Daniel looked at Amy.
