Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO STOOD BETWEEN THEM

Daniel didn’t remember the drive back to New York.

He remembered the highway.

The lights.

The rain hitting the windshield.

But everything else was a blur.

Because one thought kept repeating in his mind.

My mother betrayed me.

When Daniel entered Harrison Tower, everyone became silent.

Employees who usually greeted him looked away.

Executives stopped talking.

The atmosphere felt different.

Like the building itself knew something had changed.

Emily was waiting outside the conference room.

“You came.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What happened?”

She handed him a folder.

“The board found irregular transfers.”

Daniel opened it.

His eyes moved across the documents.

Several company assets.

Millions of dollars.

Moved through private accounts.

And every signature belonged to one person.

Margaret Harrison.

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“This has to be fake.”

Emily looked at him carefully.

“I thought that too.”

“Where is she?”

“In the boardroom.”

Daniel walked inside.

Margaret was sitting at the end of the table.

She looked tired.

Older.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret for years.

“Mom.”

She looked up.

“Daniel.”

“Tell me this isn’t true.”

Silence.

That was enough.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Why?”

Margaret looked down.

“Because I was trying to protect you.”

Daniel laughed.

A painful laugh.

“Everyone says that.”

“What?”

“Everyone who hurts me says they were protecting me.”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted this.”

“Then why?”

Margaret finally told him.

The truth.

Years ago, Richard Harrison had created a hidden financial structure.

A backup plan.

A way to protect Harrison Freight if the company ever collapsed.

But after his death, Margaret discovered something worse.

The company was not as stable as everyone believed.

Debt.

Hidden agreements.

Enemies waiting.

And one person knew how to fix it.

Vanessa.

“Vanessa threatened you?”

Daniel asked.

Margaret nodded.

“She knew about the past.”

“What past?”

“Your father’s mistakes.”

Daniel became silent.

“She said if I didn’t cooperate, she would expose everything.”

“And you helped her?”

Margaret looked broken.

“I thought I could control her.”

Daniel stared.

“You thought you could control someone who spent years manipulating everyone around her?”

Margaret looked away.

“I was wrong.”

Daniel walked to the window.

The city stretched below.

The empire he built.

The family he trusted.

Everything was falling apart.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message from Amy.

Only four words.

We need to talk.
