Chapter 7 - THE TRUTH UNDER THE PERFECT MARRIAGE

Amy didn’t sleep that night.

The photo stayed open on her phone.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Together.

Years ago.

Before the foundation.

Before the rumors.

Before the gala.

Before Amy ever suspected anything.

“How many lies were there?” she whispered.

The next morning, Helen found her sitting downstairs in the bookstore.

“You look like you didn’t sleep.”

Amy forced a smile.

“I’m okay.”

Helen placed a cup of coffee in front of her.

“People always say that when they’re not.”

Amy looked down.

“I thought I knew my husband.”

Helen sat across from her.

“Did you?”

Amy didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t know anymore.

Back in New York, Daniel was fighting a different battle.

The board meeting was chaos.

Executives whispered.

Investors questioned.

Someone had leaked private company documents.

And every piece of information pointed toward one person.

Vanessa.

“She had access to everything,” Emily explained.

Daniel looked at the screen.

“She knew our contracts.”

“Yes.”

“Our expansion plans.”

“Yes.”

“Our private schedules.”

Emily nodded.

Daniel leaned back.

The woman who had made him feel understood

had been studying him.

Not loving him.

Studying him.

Then Vanessa walked into the conference room.

Everyone went silent.

She looked calm.

Almost amused.

“Daniel.”

He stared at her.

“You need to leave.”

She smiled.

“You don’t mean that.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“Because if I leave, I take the truth with me.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What truth?”

Vanessa placed a folder on the table.

“Your father didn’t build this company alone.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside was an old legal document.

His expression changed.

Because the signature at the bottom

was his mother’s.

Margaret Harrison.

“What did you do?”

Daniel whispered.

Vanessa smiled.

“I didn’t do anything.”

She walked toward the door.

“I just think your wife deserves to know the entire story.”

Daniel looked up.

“What story?”

Vanessa turned.

“The reason your mother gave Amy that ring.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Vanessa smiled.

“She never told you, did she?”

A pause.

“Your wedding ring wasn’t just a family heirloom.”

Daniel stared.

“What are you talking about?”

Vanessa opened the door.

“Ask your mother why she was so desperate for you to marry Amy.”

Then she left.

That night, Daniel called Margaret.

His voice was different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“Why did you really want me to marry Amy?”

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Margaret whispered:

“Because I knew something you didn’t.”

Daniel stood.

“What?”

His mother’s voice broke.

“Amy was the only person who could save this family.”

Daniel felt a chill.

“Save us from what?”

Margaret answered:

“From the person who has been trying to destroy us for years.”

Daniel looked at the ring sitting on his desk.

The ring Amy left behind.

And suddenly

he understood.

The ring wasn’t the end of their marriage.

May you like

It was the beginning of the truth.
