Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY SECRET

Daniel sat in the airport lounge staring at the name on his phone.
Ethan Harrison.
His younger half-brother.
The man who had disappeared from the Harrison family five years ago.
The man Daniel believed had left New York forever.
The man who now seemed connected to everything.
âFind him.â
Emilyâs voice came through the phone.
âWeâre trying.â
âNo.â
Daniel stood.
âNot trying.â
His voice became colder.
âFind him.â
Ethan Harrison had always been the opposite of Daniel.
Daniel was disciplined.
Focused.
Controlled.
Ethan was reckless.
Emotional.
Dangerous.
Their father had always compared them.
âDaniel builds.â
âEthan destroys.â
Those words had created a hatred that lasted years.
Until Ethan left.
Or so Daniel thought.
The next morning, Daniel returned home.
Not because he gave up.
Because something felt wrong.
Someone wanted him angry.
Someone wanted him distracted.
And Daniel had learned one thing in business:
When someone controls your emotionsâŠ
they control your decisions.
Inside his apartment, he found something unexpected.
Amyâs old journal.
She had left it behind.
Not accidentally.
Placed carefully on the desk.
Daniel opened it.
The first page had one sentence.
I donât know when I became someone waiting for my own husband to notice me.
His chest tightened.
He turned the page.
March 12
Daniel forgot our anniversary dinner.
Again.
He apologized.
Again.
I believe him every time.
I donât know if that makes me hopefulâŠ
or foolish.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Another page.
June 8
I think something is wrong.
I took a pregnancy test today.
I wanted to tell Daniel.
I really did.
But he was celebrating a new contract.
Everyone was congratulating him.
I stood there holding the biggest news of our livesâŠ
and I waited.
Daniel stopped.
The room became blurry.
She had known.
She had been pregnant.
And she had been alone.
Another page.
September 1
I finally understand.
Daniel doesnât choose work over me.
He doesnât choose Vanessa over me.
He simply doesnât choose me at all.
Daniel dropped the journal.
âNoâŠâ
The word came out broken.
His phone rang.
This time it was Margaret.
âDaniel.â
âMom.â
Her voice was shaking.
âI found something.â
âWhat?â
âAmyâs original letter.â
âWhat letter?â
âThe one she planned to give you at the gala.â
Daniel stood.
âWhere is it?â
âShe left it with me.â
âRead it.â
A pause.
âDanielâŠâ
âPlease.â
Margaret opened the letter.
And read.
âAmy wroteâŠâ
Her voice cracked.
âDaniel,
I donât know if you will ever understand how long I waited for you to come back to me.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
I didnât need a bigger house.
I didnât need expensive gifts.
I needed you to look at me and ask how I was doing.
I needed you to notice I was tired.
I needed you to know we were having a baby.
I wanted to tell you while you were holding me.
But I was afraid you would say congratulations while checking your phone.â
â
Daniel covered his face.
Then Margaret continued.
âOur baby deserves a father who wants to be present.
And I deserve a husband who remembers I exist.
I love you, Daniel.
But I cannot keep disappearing while standing next to you.â
â
Silence.
Then Margaret said:
âThere is one more thing.â
Daniel looked up.
âWhat?â
âShe left something else.â
âWhat?â
âA copy of Vanessaâs messages.â
Daniel froze.
âWhat messages?â
Margaretâs voice became almost a whisper.
âThe ones proving Vanessa was never just a friend.â
Danielâs eyes darkened.
Because suddenlyâŠ
this was no longer a marriage falling apart.
This was a betrayal planned from the beginning.
And somewhere out thereâŠ
Amy was alone.
Carrying his child.
Believing he didnât care.
Daniel looked at the city outside.
Then he made a promise.
Not to his company.
Not to his reputation.
Not to his family name.
To Amy.
âIâm coming for you.â
But before he could leaveâŠ
his phone received one final message.
A photo.
Amy standing near a small coastal town.
And underneath it were six words:
She knows the truth now.
Daniel stared at the screen.
May you like
Because the photo wasnât sent by Amy.
It was sent by Ethan.
