Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO CONTROLLED THE KANE EMPIRE

Willa thought she had heard everything.
She was wrong.
Everett Kane’s mother.
The woman who built the Kane family reputation.
The woman everyone respected.
Eleanor Kane.
The same woman who welcomed Willa into the mansion.
The same woman who watched her sleep beside Everett.
The same woman who never showed emotion.
“She helped Sterling?”
Everett nodded slowly.
“I don’t know how much.”
“But I know she knew.”
Willa looked shocked.
“Your own mother?”
Everett looked away.
“In my family…”
His voice was bitter.
“Blood doesn’t always mean loyalty.”
The next morning…
Eleanor entered Everett’s room.
She stopped when she saw his open eyes.
For the first time…
Her perfect expression broke.
“Everett.”
Her voice trembled.
A real emotion.
Fear.
Willa noticed.
Eleanor walked closer.
“My son.”
Everett looked at her.
“Why?”
One word.
But it carried eight months of pain.
Eleanor’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?”
Everett stared at her.
“You know.”
Silence.
Willa watched carefully.
She saw something.
A mother who looked guilty.
Not surprised.
Guilty.
“You let them do this.”
Everett whispered.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Willa stepped forward.
“Protect him?”
Her voice became sharp.
“By keeping him drugged?”
Eleanor looked at her.
“You don’t understand this family.”
“No.”
Willa answered.
“I understand enough.”
Eleanor looked at Everett.
“You have no idea what would happen if you exposed everything.”
Everett’s expression hardened.
“People already suffered because of your choices.”
Eleanor looked at Willa.
And whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
Willa froze.
Because she wasn’t apologizing to Everett.
She was apologizing to her.
Later that day…
Willa found a hidden file inside Eleanor’s old office.
A file with one name.
WILLA HAYES.
Her hands shook.
She opened it.
Inside were documents from three years ago.
Her nursing license investigation.
Hospital reports.
Private payments.
And one photograph.
A photograph of her.
Taken before she lost everything.
On the back was a handwritten message.
"She is the perfect person to destroy."
Willa felt cold.
Someone had planned her downfall.
Not because of Harold Fisk.
Not because of a mistake.
But because someone needed a sacrifice.
Someone needed a person nobody would defend.
And they chose her.
That night…
Willa returned to Everett’s room.
She placed the file on the bed.
“They destroyed my life because of you.”
Everett looked at the documents.
Pain filled his eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked at him.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.”
Everett nodded.
“I understand.”
A long silence.
Then he said:
“But I swear…”
His voice became stronger.
“I will fix this.”
Suddenly…
The mansion lights went out.
Every screen turned black.
Security alarms started ringing.
Marcus rushed into the room.
“Everett!”
“What happened?”
Marcus looked terrified.
“Someone broke into the estate.”
Willa stood.
“Who?”
Marcus looked at her.
May you like
Then said the words that changed everything.
“They came for you.”
