Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO HEARD EVERYTHING

For eight months…
Everett Kane lived inside darkness.
He heard everything.
Every conversation.
Every lie.
Every betrayal.
People came into his room believing he was nothing but a body.
A body that could not understand.
A body that could not remember.
They were wrong.
Everett remembered everything.
He remembered Sterling standing beside his hospital bed.
Whispering:
“You should have given me everything.”
He remembered Dr. Whitfield saying:
“Don’t worry.”
“He will never wake up.”
He remembered the pain.
The helplessness.
The anger.
But now…
There was something else.
Willa.
The woman everyone thought was powerless.
The woman with no money.
No family.
No reputation.
The woman who had walked into the Kane empire with nothing…
And challenged everyone.
Willa stayed beside him all night.
She refused to sleep.
She watched every movement.
Every breath.
Every change.
At 3:17 a.m…
It happened.
Everett opened his eyes.
Only for a second.
But he opened them.
Willa was looking directly at him.
Their eyes met.
And the world stopped.
For the first time…
Everett Kane saw his wife.
Not the woman forced into marriage.
Not the homeless woman people mocked.
A woman who had risked everything for him.
“Everett?”
His throat burned.
His voice barely existed.
But he forced the words out.
“Run.”
Willa froze.
“What?”
His eyes closed again.
His body weakened.
But the message was clear.
“Run.”
Willa looked at him.
Then whispered:
“No.”
She held his hand.
“I’m not leaving.”
Minutes later…
The door opened.
Dr. Whitfield walked in.
He stopped when he saw Willa.
“You saw him.”
It wasn’t a question.
Willa looked at him.
“Yes.”
The doctor’s expression became cold.
“That changes everything.”
Willa stepped between him and Everett.
“Not for me.”
Whitfield stared.
“You still don’t understand who you’re fighting.”
Willa smiled.
“No.”
She looked at Everett.
“I understand now.”
A pause.
“I’m fighting for him.”
The doctor left.
But before closing the door…
He whispered:
“You should ask your husband what happened to your nursing license.”
Willa froze.
“What?”
Whitfield smiled.
“Because the truth is…”
May you like
He closed the door.
“You were never framed by accident.”
