Chapter 2 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE MEDICAL ROOM

The next morning, Willa woke up sitting beside Everett’s bed.

Her neck hurt.

Her back hurt.

But she didn’t care.

The first thing she did was check his vital signs.

The second thing she did was check the medication.

And the third thing she did…

Was search for answers.

She moved carefully.

Quietly.

Like she was back in the hospital.

The hospital where everything had been taken from her.

Three years earlier, Willa Hayes had saved twelve lives in one night.

A highway accident had brought dozens of injured people into St. Ambrose Hospital.

Doctors were overwhelmed.

Nurses were exhausted.

But Willa stayed.

She worked for fourteen straight hours.

She never complained.

She never panicked.

Her supervisor once told her:

“Willa, when everyone else freezes, you become the calm.”

She thought that was who she would always be.

Until Harold Fisk died.

One mistake.

One accusation.

One signature that wasn’t hers.

And suddenly everyone forgot every life she saved.

Everyone remembered only the one person she supposedly killed.

Now she was standing beside another man whose life was being controlled by someone else.

And she refused to let it happen again.

At breakfast, Sterling Kane finally appeared.

He walked into the dining room like he owned the world.

Because he almost did.

“Mrs. Kane.”

Willa looked up.

“Sterling.”

He smiled.

“I hope your first night was comfortable.”

“It wasn’t.”

His smile remained.

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

“No, you aren’t.”

The servants immediately looked away.

Nobody spoke to Sterling like that.

But Willa didn’t care.

She had already lost everything once.

Fear couldn’t take anything else.

Sterling sat across from her.

“You should understand something.”

“What?”

“This family has rules.”

Willa drank her coffee.

“I’m sure it does.”

“You are Everett’s wife.”

“Yes.”

“But you are not a Kane.”

She looked at him.

“Then why did you make me one?”

Silence.

Sterling’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Willa noticed.

“You needed someone.”

She continued.

“Someone nobody would miss.”

Sterling smiled again.

“You are smarter than people think.”

Willa leaned forward.

“Why me?”

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

That afternoon, Willa found something hidden inside Everett’s room.

A small locked drawer.

She searched carefully.

Inside was a photograph.

A young Everett.

Maybe twenty-five years old.

Standing beside a woman.

The woman was smiling.

But Everett wasn’t.

He looked afraid.

On the back of the photo was a handwritten message.

"You promised you would protect me."

Willa stared at the words.

Then she heard something.

A weak sound.

Almost impossible to hear.

She turned.

Everett’s finger moved.

Only slightly.

But it moved.

Willa froze.

“Everett?”

She rushed toward him.

“Everett, can you hear me?”

His finger stopped.

The machines continued.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Then suddenly…

The door opened.

Dr. Whitfield stood there.

“What happened?”

Willa turned.

Her eyes were sharp.

“He moved.”

Whitfield walked closer.

“No.”

“He did.”

The doctor checked the monitor.

Then smiled.

“Sometimes muscles twitch during unconscious states.”

Willa watched him.

“No.”

Her voice became cold.

“That wasn’t a twitch.”

Whitfield looked at her.

For the first time…

He looked afraid.

That night, Willa made a decision.

She needed help.

Someone inside the Kane family.

Someone who hated Sterling.

Someone who knew Everett before the accident.

And the next morning…

She discovered exactly who that person was.

Because a woman in an old photograph arrived at the mansion.

And when she saw Willa standing beside Everett’s bed…

She whispered:

“You don’t know what you married into.”

Willa looked at her.

“Who are you?”

May you like

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m the reason Everett Kane is still alive.”
