Chapter 14 - THE RETURN OF THE DEAD MAN

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Because impossible things were happening.

Richard Kane.

The man who supposedly died ten years earlier.

The man whose death changed the entire Kane family.

Was standing in the mansion.

Alive.

Older.

But alive.

Everett stared at him.

His entire world collapsed.

“Dad?”

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Richard looked at his son.

“I’m sorry.”

Everett’s face hardened.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let everyone believe you were dead.”

Richard looked down.

“Yes.”

Willa watched silently.

She had learned enough about the Kane family to know one thing.

Nothing was ever simple.

Sterling looked furious.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Richard turned toward him.

“You made too many mistakes.”

Sterling laughed.

“You think you can judge me?”

Richard looked at him.

“I created you.”

The words were cold.

“And that was my biggest mistake.”

Richard revealed the truth.

Years earlier…

He discovered that several people inside the Kane empire were stealing money.

Including Sterling.

Including Whitfield.

But when he tried to expose them…

They turned against him.

A fake death was the only way he could disappear.

“You abandoned us.”

Everett’s voice was full of anger.

Richard looked at him.

“I protected you.”

“No.”

Everett shook his head.

“You protected yourself.”

Silence.

Richard accepted the accusation.

Because he knew it was true.

Willa stepped forward.

“Why did you let me suffer?”

Richard looked confused.

“What?”

“The nursing investigation.”

“The fake evidence.”

“Everything.”

Richard looked at Everett.

Then at Whitfield.

And finally understood.

“He used you.”

Willa laughed bitterly.

“Everyone used me.”

Richard looked at her.

“No.”

His voice softened.

“You were chosen because you were the only person who could expose them.”

Willa frowned.

“What?”

Richard explained.

Years earlier…

He had discovered Willa’s name connected to Harold Fisk’s death.

But he also discovered something else.

She was innocent.

“She was the only person honest enough to fight back.”

Everett looked at Willa.

And for the first time…

He realized something.

Their paths were never random.

They were connected from the beginning.

Sterling suddenly moved.

He grabbed Eleanor.

A gun pressed against her head.

Everyone froze.

“You all love secrets.”

His voice shook.

“Fine.”

“Here is one more.”

He looked at Everett.

“Your mother knew.”

Everett stared.

“Knew what?”

Sterling smiled.

“Your father didn’t disappear.”

“Your mother helped him.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Everett looked devastated.

“Is that true?”

A long silence.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“Yes.”

The betrayal was too much.

Everett looked at the people around him.

His father.

His mother.

His cousin.

Everyone he trusted.

Everyone had lied.

Except one person.

Willa.

The woman who had nothing.

The woman who came into his life because of a forced marriage.

The woman who stayed when everyone else left.

He looked at her.

And whispered:

“You were the only honest person in this house.”

Suddenly…

Sterling fired.

But this time…

The bullet was not aimed at Everett.

It was aimed at Willa.

Everett moved before thinking.

He pushed himself forward.

The bullet struck his shoulder.

Willa screamed.

“Everett!”

He fell.

And as darkness surrounded him again…

He heard her voice.

The same voice from the altar.

May you like

The same promise that brought him back.

“I won’t let them take you.”
