Chapter 11 - THE SIN OF THE KANE FAMILY

Nobody slept that night.

Not Willa.

Not Everett.

Not Marcus.

Not even Eleanor.

The entire mansion felt like it was holding its breath.

Because everyone knew the same thing.

The past had returned.

And it was demanding answers.

Eleanor finally told the truth.

Twenty-five years earlier…

Before Everett became the head of Kane Transportation…

His father, Richard Kane, controlled everything.

Money.

Businesses.

Connections.

Fear.

But Richard had one weakness.

He trusted the wrong people.

Including a young man named Alan Whitfield.

Dr. Whitfield.

The same man who had destroyed Willa’s life.

“The doctor?”

Willa whispered.

Eleanor nodded.

“He wasn’t always a doctor for this family.”

“He was an accountant.”

Everett looked shocked.

“Why would my father trust him?”

“Because Alan was brilliant.”

A pause.

“And because Richard needed someone who could make problems disappear.”

Willa felt sick.

Everything connected.

Harold Fisk.

The hospital.

The fake documents.

Everett’s accident.

All of it.

“What happened to Harold Fisk?”

Eleanor looked at her.

“Harold discovered the truth.”

Willa froze.

“He knew about the money.”

Everett nodded slowly.

“He found the hidden accounts.”

“And before he could expose them…”

“He was killed.”

Willa sat down.

Three years.

Three years believing she destroyed a man's life.

But the truth was different.

She had been another victim.

Just like Everett.

Later…

Everett asked Marcus to help him stand.

Willa immediately objected.

“No.”

“I need to walk.”

“You almost died yesterday.”

“And I almost died eight months ago.”

He looked at her.

“I’m done lying in this bed.”

Something about his voice made her stop.

This wasn’t the weak man from the hospital.

This was Everett Kane.

The man everyone feared.

Slowly…

With Marcus supporting him…

Everett stood.

His legs shook.

Pain crossed his face.

But he remained standing.

Willa watched silently.

Because she realized something.

Everett wasn’t fighting to regain power.

He was fighting because he refused to let anyone else suffer.

That evening…

Everett called a meeting.

Everyone important inside the Kane organization gathered.

Executives.

Security leaders.

Family members.

Sterling arrived last.

Still calm.

Still smiling.

When he saw Everett standing…

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But everyone saw it.

Everett walked into the room.

Weak.

Slow.

But alive.

The entire room went silent.

“The ghost finally came back.”

Sterling smiled.

Everett looked at him.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“The nightmare came back.”

Sterling laughed.

“You think you can defeat me?”

Everett looked around the room.

“I don’t need to defeat you.”

A pause.

“I only need everyone to see you.”

Sterling’s smile faded.

Everett placed documents on the table.

Bank records.

Medical reports.

Evidence.

Then he looked at Willa.

“She was the first person brave enough to look for the truth.”

Everyone stared at her.

The homeless woman.

The woman they mocked.

The woman they thought was disposable.

Now standing beside Everett Kane.

Sterling stepped forward.

“You really trust her?”

Everett answered immediately.

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

Because nobody had heard Everett Kane trust someone in years.

Sterling’s face hardened.

“You have no idea who she really is.”

Willa looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Sterling smiled.

A dangerous smile.

“Ask Everett.”

Everyone looked at him.

Everett went silent.

Willa noticed.

“Everett?”

His expression changed.

May you like

Because there was one secret he had never told her.

A secret that could destroy everything.
