Chapter 7 - THE LIE THAT DESTROYED WILLA HAYES

The words from Dr. Whitfield stayed inside Willa’s mind.

You were never framed by accident.

She stood alone in Everett’s room after he left.

The machines continued their quiet rhythm.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

But everything felt different.

For three years…

Willa believed she had been destroyed by a mistake.

A terrible accident.

A cruel system.

A hospital that cared more about protecting itself than finding the truth.

But now…

Someone was telling her that it had all been planned.

And the worst part?

The person who knew the truth was lying only a few feet away from her.

Everett Kane.

The man she had been trying to save.

The man who had heard every word she whispered.

The man who knew secrets about her life that she didn’t even know herself.

Willa looked at him.

“Everett.”

His eyes opened slowly.

This time…

They stayed open.

For the first time in eight months.

The famous Everett Kane was awake.

But he looked nothing like the man people feared.

He looked exhausted.

Human.

Lost.

His lips moved.

“Willa…”

Her heart stopped.

He knew her name.

She stepped closer.

“How do you know my name?”

Everett struggled to breathe.

“Wedding…”

His voice was weak.

“I heard…”

Willa stared at him.

“You heard me?”

A small movement.

A tiny nod.

For a moment…

She forgot everything else.

The danger.

The lies.

The mansion.

She only saw a man who had been trapped in darkness.

A man who had heard her promise.

“I thought you couldn’t hear anything.”

Everett closed his eyes.

“I heard everything.”

His voice cracked.

“Every lie.”

A pause.

“Every person who came into this room.”

Willa’s expression hardened.

“Then you know who did this.”

Everett looked toward the door.

Fear appeared in his eyes.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for her.

“Sterling.”

The name came out like a warning.

Willa nodded slowly.

“I knew it.”

Everett tried to move.

Pain crossed his face.

Willa immediately helped him.

“Don’t.”

“You need to rest.”

But Everett grabbed her wrist.

His grip was weak.

Almost nothing.

But it was enough.

“Listen.”

His eyes locked onto hers.

“You need to leave.”

“No.”

“Willa.”

“I said no.”

His expression changed.

He wasn’t used to being refused.

Especially not by anyone.

“I know what kind of people they are.”

“So do I.”

“You don’t.”

Willa stepped closer.

“I know exactly what people like them can do.”

Her voice became quieter.

“Because I lost my entire life because of people like them.”

Everett froze.

“What?”

Willa looked away.

For years…

She had never told anyone the full story.

But maybe now she had to.

“I was a nurse at St. Ambrose Hospital.”

Everett listened.

“I loved my job.”

She smiled sadly.

“I was good at it.”

“Then Harold Fisk died.”

Everett’s eyes narrowed.

“The patient?”

Willa looked at him.

“You know about that?”

“I investigated.”

Her heart tightened.

“Why?”

Everett looked away.

“Because his death was connected to my company.”

Silence.

Willa felt the room shift.

“Explain.”

Everett swallowed.

“Harold Fisk was not just a patient.”

“He was an accountant.”

“For one of my transportation companies.”

Willa stared.

“The hospital said…”

“I know what they said.”

Everett interrupted.

“But they lied.”

The room went quiet.

Willa felt anger rising.

“You knew?”

Everett looked at her.

“I knew someone was trying to erase evidence.”

Her voice shook.

“And you did nothing?”

Pain appeared on his face.

“I was trying to find proof.”

“While my life was destroyed?”

The words hit harder than she expected.

Everett looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

Willa laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it hurt.

“I spent three years believing I killed someone.”

“And you were searching for answers?”

Everett closed his eyes.

“I didn’t know it was you.”

The silence between them was heavy.

Then Everett said something that changed everything.

“Willa.”

She looked at him.

“The night Harold Fisk died…”

A pause.

“Someone used your name because they knew you would take the blame.”

Her breathing stopped.

“Who?”

Everett looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

“My cousin.”

At that exact moment…

Outside the room…

Sterling Kane stood behind the door.

Listening.

His expression was no longer calm.

Because he heard Everett say his name.

And he understood one thing.

May you like

The man he tried to bury alive…

Was awake.
