Chapter 13 - THE BETRAYAL THAT BROKE EVERYTHING

The room went completely silent.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Everyone stared at the screen.
Marcus Reed.
Everett’s most trusted protector.
The man who had saved his life countless times.
The man who had stood beside him for twelve years.
Was standing beside Dr. Alan Whitfield.
The enemy.
The man responsible for destroying Willa.
The man who kept Everett trapped inside his own body.
Willa slowly turned.
Her eyes found Marcus.
For a moment…
She didn’t know what to believe.
Because Marcus had been the one who warned her.
He had been the one who gave her the truth.
He had been the one who helped her fight.
But now…
He looked like the enemy.
Everett stared at the screen.
His face was emotionless.
Too emotionless.
And Willa realized something.
This hurt him more than anything else.
Because betrayal from a stranger was expected.
Betrayal from family was painful.
But betrayal from someone who stood beside you every day…
Was something else entirely.
“Marcus.”
Everett’s voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
The security chief lowered his head.
“Everett…”
“Explain.”
Marcus said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Everett looked away.
For the first time…
Willa saw him truly broken.
The video continued.
Dr. Whitfield looked directly into the camera.
“Everyone wants to know who is responsible.”
He smiled.
“They want a villain.”
A pause.
“But the truth is more complicated.”
The screen showed old documents.
Financial records.
Hospital reports.
Private contracts.
Then Whitfield said:
“The Kane family was never destroyed by outsiders.”
“It was destroyed from within.”
The video stopped.
The mansion remained silent.
Then Everett spoke.
“Everyone leaves.”
Nobody moved.
“I said leave.”
His voice was stronger.
The room slowly emptied.
Only Willa, Everett, Marcus, and Eleanor remained.
Everett looked at Marcus.
“Were you working with him?”
Marcus looked exhausted.
“No.”
Everett laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Because the video is not what you think.”
Willa watched him carefully.
She had learned something over the past days.
People could lie with words.
But their eyes often told the truth.
Marcus looked guilty.
But not like a traitor.
Like a man carrying a terrible secret.
“What happened?”
Willa asked.
Marcus looked at her.
“I was investigating him.”
Everett frowned.
“What?”
“For years.”
Marcus took a deep breath.
“I knew someone inside the organization was stealing from you.”
“I knew Sterling was involved.”
“But I didn’t have proof.”
He looked at the screen.
“So I got close to Whitfield.”
Everett stared.
“You let me believe you betrayed me?”
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“I needed them to believe I was on their side.”
Silence.
Willa looked at Everett.
“And the video?”
Marcus answered:
“They edited it.”
Suddenly…
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Everyone turned.
Marcus immediately reached for his weapon.
“Stay here.”
Everett shook his head.
“No.”
Willa looked at him.
“You’re still weak.”
Everett looked back.
“But I’m awake.”
They moved through the mansion.
Slowly.
Carefully.
The entire estate felt abandoned.
The guards were gone.
The lights flickered.
Then they reached the main hall.
And stopped.
Because standing there…
Was Sterling Kane.
Holding a gun.
Beside him stood Dr. Whitfield.
And behind them…
Several armed men.
Sterling smiled.
“Look at this.”
He looked at Everett.
“The family reunion.”
Everett stared.
“You planned this.”
Sterling laughed.
“I planned everything.”
Willa stepped forward.
“You framed me.”
Sterling looked at her.
“Yes.”
The honesty shocked her.
He didn’t even deny it.
“You needed someone nobody would protect.”
His eyes moved over her old wedding dress.
“And you were perfect.”
Willa’s hands tightened.
“You destroyed my life.”
Sterling smiled.
“No.”
He corrected.
“I gave your life a purpose.”
Everett’s expression darkened.
“Enough.”
Sterling looked at him.
“You always had everything.”
“My father loved you.”
“The family chose you.”
“The city feared you.”
He stepped closer.
“I spent my whole life watching you become someone important.”
A bitter smile.
“And I was always the forgotten Kane.”
Everett looked at him.
“You could have built your own life.”
Sterling laughed.
“People like you always say that.”
He raised the gun.
“Because you never had to fight for anything.”
Before anyone could react…
A gunshot exploded.
Everyone froze.
But the bullet did not hit Everett.
It hit the floor.
Because Marcus had moved.
Fast.
Protecting him.
Again.
Chaos erupted.
Security lights flashed.
People shouted.
Willa grabbed Everett and pulled him behind a stone pillar.
Marcus fought through the guards.
Eleanor screamed.
“Stop!”
But nobody listened.
Then suddenly…
The mansion went dark.
Completely dark.
And in the darkness…
A single voice spoke.
Not Sterling.
Not Whitfield.
Someone else.
A voice from the past.
“Enough.”
Everyone froze.
The lights returned.
And standing at the entrance…
Was a man everyone believed was dead.
May you like
Everett’s father.
Richard Kane.
