Chapter 8 - The Highway Chase

"Is that Julian?" Eleanor asked, her voice trembling with rising panic.

"It's his private security force," her mother replied, her voice turning cold and sharp.

"He will never let us leave this city alive if he knows I am talking to you," her mother added.

The leading dark sedan surged forward, ramming its front bumper violently into the back of their SUV.

The sudden impact jolted everyone forward, making Lily scream in terror.

"Hold on to something!" the driver yelled, swerving hard into the left lane.

Rain slicked the highway asphalt, making the tires screech against the wet road.

The second dark sedan pulled up right alongside the passenger side of the SUV.

The tinted window of the sedan rolled down, revealing a masked man holding a heavy iron bar.

He swung the bar viciously, shattering the SUV's side mirror into a hundred pieces.

"He isn't trying to capture us, Eleanor," her mother said softly, pulling Lily into a protective hug.

"Julian wants to make sure we suffer the same fate he planned ten years ago," her mother revealed.

"What do you mean?!" Eleanor shouted over the roaring engine and rain.

"The fire at our house ten years ago wasn't an accident," her mother said, staring directly into Eleanor's eyes.

"Julian set the fire himself to destroy our family and claim your father's estate," her mother revealed.

"And he kept you alive under heavy medication so you would never remember what happened," her mother added.

A loud BANG echoed outside as the sedan rammed them again, forcing the SUV toward the concrete guardrail.

Sparks screamed against the dark night as the SUV scraped violently against the divider wall.

"I can't hold the wheel!" the driver shouted as the steering column began to lock up.

Up ahead, the highway split into two directions near a steep mountain cliff.
