Chapter 17 - The Keypad Secret
Eleanor slapped her hand against the electronic keypad, but the screen only flashed LOCKED.
"It needs a four-digit emergency override code!" Eleanor yelled, coughing from the thickening smoke.
"Julian set this system up five years ago," her father rasped, resting his weight on Jax.
"He was obsessed with numbers... numbers that meant something to you, Eleanor," he added.
Eleanor’s mind raced through memories, dates, and anniversaries.
"My birthday? The wedding date?" Eleanor asked frantically, her eyes burning from the smoke.
"No... think about the locket!" the waitress suggested, pointing through the hazy air.
Eleanor closed her eyes, remembering the cold brass pocket watch she held earlier that day.
Inside the cover, etched beneath the photo, were tiny numbers she hadn't paid attention to before.
"1 - 0 - 2 - 4," Eleanor remembered out loud.
She quickly punched the four numbers into the glowing digital keypad.
The red light blinked twice and instantly turned solid green.
CLICK-BUZZ.
The heavy iron vault door unlocked with a pneumatic hiss.

Jax shoved the heavy door open, revealing the stone staircase leading up to the burning courtyard.
"Go! Go! Go!" Jax roared, pushing everyone toward the stairs.
