Chapter 19 - The Unfinished Truth
"Thank you, Jax," Eleanor said quietly, looking into the eyes of the man who saved her family.
"I didn't do it for thanks, kid," Jax replied softly, a faint, rare smile appearing beneath his beard.
"I did it because your dad was my best friend before Julian destroyed everything," Jax revealed.
Eleanor stared at him in shock as the pieces finally connected in her mind.
Jax was the young racer in the faded photograph from ten years ago.
"You were the uncle Lily whispered about..." Eleanor gasped softly.
"I had to go into hiding when Julian took over," Jax explained, looking down at his scarred hands.
"I spent five years gathering evidence to tear his empire down piece by piece."
Suddenly, a loud commotion erupted near the edge of the cliff down the road.
A state trooper came running up the hill toward the lead detective, speaking urgently into his radio.
"We found the wreckage of the vehicle in the river below!" the trooper announced loudly.
Eleanor turned her head, her breath catching in her throat once again.
"Did you find Julian's body?" the detective asked firmly over the noise of the wind.
The trooper pulled off his rain helmet, looking deeply troubled.

"The driver's door was forced open from the inside," the trooper reported.
"The cabin is empty."
