Chapter 13 - Return to the Chapel

The sirens finally wailed in the distance as state police cars swept onto the highway.

Jax pushed himself up from the cold mud, his knuckles bloody and raw.

"We don't have time to wait for the police report," Jax grunted, wiping rain from his face.

"Julian’s men will cover their tracks the second they realize he’s gone," the waitress said, stepping up beside him.

Eleanor turned to her mother, who was holding Lily tightly inside the idling black SUV.

"Mom, stay here with Lily and the police," Eleanor said, her voice shaking but firm.

"No, Eleanor, I just got you back!" her mother cried out, reaching through the open door.

"I have to go get Dad," Eleanor said, staring into her mother's eyes with absolute resolve.

"He's been locked in the dark for ten years because of Julian."

Her mother swallowed hard, tears mingling with the rainwater on her cheeks, and slowly nodded.

Eleanor climbed into the front passenger seat of Jax's battered pickup truck.

Jax slammed his foot onto the gas pedal, spinning the truck around on the wet asphalt.

They sped back down the dark highway, roaring toward the chapel on the hill.
