Chapter 10 - The Ambush

Red and blue light strobes cut through the heavy downpour, blinding everyone on the cliffside.

Julian didn't lower his gun; his eyes merely narrowed as he glared into the flashing light.

Two state police cruisers skidded to a halt on the shoulder of the highway.

"Drop the weapon immediately!" a voice boomed over a loudspeaker.

Julian spat on the wet pavement and backed toward his sedan.

"You really thought calling the police would save you, Eleanor?" Julian sneered over the roar of the rain.

"I didn't call them," Eleanor said, her eyes fixed on the lead police car.

The driver’s door of the first police cruiser popped open.

A man in a worn leather vest stepped out into the rain.

It was Jax, the heavily tattooed motorcycle racer from the diner.

Beside him stood the sharp-eyed waitress, holding a tactical flashlight.

"You're out of options, Julian," Jax called out, his rugged voice carrying over the wind.

"The police are ten minutes behind us, but we brought enough evidence to end this tonight," Jax shouted.

Julian let out a sharp, cruel laugh that echoed off the rock wall behind them.

"Evidence? From a broken-down racer and a diner waitress?" Julian mocked.

The waitress raised her phone, displaying a live video recording on the glowing screen.

"We have full footage of your men forcing that child into the building, Julian," she shouted.

Julian’s face went dead cold, his polite mask completely slipping away.

Without another word, Julian pulled the trigger.
