Chapter 11 - The Fall

The gun blast cracked through the air, sharp and deafening.
Jax lunged forward, throwing his heavy frame toward Eleanor to knock her out of the line of fire.
They both crashed onto the muddy gravel as the bullet hit the driver's side mirror of the SUV.
"Get in the car!" Jax roared, pushing Eleanor toward the SUV's open door.
Julian's guards raised their weapons and opened fire on the police cruisers.
Muzzle flashes illuminated the storm as glass shattered and metal screeched.
Eleanor's mother reached out and pulled Eleanor back inside the SUV's cabin.
"Jax, get in!" Eleanor screamed, reaching her hand out through the open door.
Jax turned back toward Julian, his face filled with years of unvented rage.
"This ends now, Julian!" Jax growled, charging straight through the crossfire.
Julian fired two quick shots at Jax, missing by inches as Jax tackled him around the waist.
Both men crashed hard against the wooden guardrail at the edge of the cliff.
The rotten wood snapped with a loud, sickening crack.
Julian gasped as he slipped backward over the precipice, grabbing frantically for anything to hold onto.
He caught Jax by the collar of his leather vest, dragging Jax down with him.
"Jax!" the waitress shrieked, sprinting toward the snapping fence.

Eleanor leaned out of the SUV, her heart stopping as she watched both men dangle over the dark abyss.
Below them lay a hundreds-of-feet drop into the rushing black waters of the river.
