Chapter 7 - The Prisoner in Sector 4

Victoria’s grip on the pistol didn't loosen.
"Where is he?" she demanded, her voice cracking with suppressed rage.
"The Sub-Level 3 facility... beneath the old defense spire," Jackson stammered.
"They're holding him as insurance in case you survived the ballroom."
Victoria realized the true horror of the trap.
General Vance knew she wouldn't die easily at the gala.
The entire erasure of her identity was designed to drive her into a corner.
And her brother was the ultimate leverage to keep her obedient—or draw her into the open.
"Does Marcus know?" Victoria asked coldly.
"Marcus organized the transport himself," Jackson admitted, looking away in shame.
A shadow fell over the alleyway entrance.
"Drop the gun, Commander!" Marcus’s voice echoed from the street.
Marcus stood at the mouth of the alley, his assault rifle leveled directly at Victoria's chest.
"You always were too sentimental, Victoria," Marcus said with a dark sneer.
"That's why you lost."
Victoria didn't drop the gun.
Instead, she dragged Jackson in front of her as a human shield.
"Shoot through him then, Marcus," she dared him.
"You've already sold your soul—what's one more brother-in-arms?"

Marcus didn't hesitate.
He pulled the trigger.
