Chapter 18 - The Crown of the Spire

Victoria caught the steel cable with her bare hands, friction burning her palms as she hauled herself onto the roof of the ascending elevator.
She reached down, catching Leo's wrist just as his grip slipped, pulling him up onto the platform.
The elevator surged upward, breaking through the top floor into the glass-walled apex of the spire.
The panoramic view exposed the entire storm-swept city below, illuminated by lightning.
In the center of the glass dome stood General Vance.
Beside him sat Evelyn, casually monitoring the progress bars on a massive holographic console.
"00 MINUTES 48 SECONDS."
"Remarkable," Vance said smoothly without turning around.
"You really are impossible to kill, Victoria."
Evelyn turned, pulling a sleek pearl-handled revolver from her coat.
"It doesn't matter," Evelyn smiled triumphantly. "The transmission is ninety percent complete."
"You lost the moment you walked into that ballroom, Commander," Vance added, tapping the glass terminal.
