Chapter 10 - The Mirror in the Dark

Victoria pressed her back against the reinforced steel door of Sub-Level 3.
"Evelyn," Victoria said quietly into the radio. "I should have known you were pulling Vance's strings."
"Vance is just a politician with a grand uniform, my dear," Evelyn laughed softly over the frequency.
"He thinks he runs the city, but my syndicate funds his entire military cabinet."
"Where is my brother?" Victoria demanded, checking her magazine.
Only four rounds left.
"Oh, he's right behind that door you're standing against," Evelyn replied pleasantly.
"But before you go in, you should check the monitor next to the security lock."
Victoria turned her head slightly to look at the small digital terminal mounted on the wall.
The screen flickered to life, displaying a live feed of the cell inside Sub-Level 3.
A man sat in a chair under a harsh spotlight, tied up and beat up.
It was indeed her younger brother, Leo.
But standing next to him was not a squad of guards or General Vance.
It was someone else entirely.
Sitting in the shadow across from her brother was an exact mirror image of Victoria herself.
The woman on the screen wore the same military uniform Victoria had worn during Operation Sundown.
She had the exact same face, the exact same hairstyle, and the exact same cold stare.
Victoria's heart stopped.
"Did you really think Operation Sundown was about fighting an enemy force, Victoria?" Evelyn's voice whispered softly in her ear.

"You weren't sent out there to win a war."
"You were sent out there to be replaced."
