Chapter 5 - Unwelcome Revelations

Victoria turned around inside the glass booth.
Across the rainy street, a black armored SUV pulled up quietly to the curb.
The tinted window rolled down slowly.
Sitting in the driver's seat was Marcus—her second-in-command.
The man whose life she had personally saved during Operation Sundown.
He wasn't running.
He wasn't hiding.
He was wearing a brand-new suit and holding a high-grade military tracker pointed directly at her booth.
"Marcus... why?" Victoria whispered into the receiver.
"They offered us a choice, Commander," Marcus's voice echoed through the phone line.
"We could die as forgotten ghosts in the mud..."
"Or live as rich men in the upper sectors."
Victoria felt a cold knot tighten in her gut.
"You sold out the squad?" she asked, her voice deadly quiet.
"The squad didn't sell out," Marcus corrected coldly.
"We all agreed."
"Every single one of us took the money."
Victoria’s hand trembled slightly on the receiver.
The men she considered family had traded her life for high-society comfort.
"You were the only one who refused to let the past go, Victoria," Marcus said.
"You were the only one who insisted on bringing the truth back."
"So General Vance gave us one final contract to secure our freedom."
The SUV doors opened, and three of her former squad members stepped out into the rain.
They were all armed with silenced submachine guns.
They walked toward the telephone booth with cold, mechanical precision.
"Eliminate the Commander," Marcus said over the line before hanging up.
Victoria slowly hung up the receiver.
She raised her pistol and aimed it through the rain-streaked glass.

Her eyes hardened into ice.
If her own family wanted a war, she was going to give them one.
