CHAPTER 9 — THE GHOST WHO CONTROLLED THE CALLAHAN FAMILY

The room went completely silent.

Not the kind of silence that came from confusion.

The kind that came from fear.

Real fear.

I looked at the name written at the bottom of Sarah Bennett’s letter.

My mind refused to accept it.

Because everyone knew this person.

Everyone believed this person was gone.

Dead.

Buried.

A memory from another time.

But Sarah’s final warning said otherwise.

The person who tried to destroy Elena was not Marcus.

The person controlling everything was someone who had been hiding since the beginning.

And the name underneath those words was:

Thomas Callahan.

My grandfather.

My father’s father.

The founder of the original Callahan empire.

A man who had supposedly died twenty years ago.

I stared at the paper.

“No.”

The word came out quietly.

Then louder.

“No.”

Elena reached for my hand.

“Daniel…”

“That’s impossible.”

Richard Hale looked away.

That reaction told me everything.

I turned toward him.

“You knew.”

The lawyer said nothing.

“Richard.”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

My stomach dropped.

“You knew my grandfather was alive?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I knew rumors.”

“Rumors?”

My voice sharpened.

“My grandfather died.”

“Yes.”

“Then how could he be alive?”

Richard looked at Detective Carter.

Then back at me.

“Because the man buried twenty years ago was not Thomas Callahan.”

The room froze.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

My entire understanding of my family collapsed again.

Every generation.

Every story.

Every memory.

Everything had another layer beneath it.

Detective Carter slowly stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Richard looked exhausted.

“Thomas Callahan was not a man who trusted anyone.”

“That’s an understatement,” I said.

Richard ignored the comment.

“He believed power was the only thing that mattered.”

“What does that have to do with this?”

“Everything.”

He looked at me.

“Your grandfather created the original Callahan empire. But he also created something else.”

“What?”

“A system.”

I frowned.

“A system?”

“A network of people who owed him everything.”

Detective Carter crossed his arms.

“Influence.”

Richard nodded.

“Exactly.”

He continued:

“Politicians. Business owners. Lawyers. Investors.”

My jaw tightened.

“The Founders.”

“Yes.”

The word suddenly felt different.

Not like a group.

Like an organization.

Richard continued.

“Your father discovered what Thomas was doing.”

“And he tried to stop him.”

“Yes.”

I remembered the notebook.

My father’s warning.

The truth about Marcus.

The hidden money.

The protection account.

“He tried to escape.”

Richard nodded.

“And Thomas considered that betrayal.”

I looked at Sarah’s letter again.

My biological mother had known.

She had discovered something.

Something that made Thomas Callahan willing to erase people.

“What happened to Sarah?”

Nobody answered.

That scared me.

Finally, Margaret spoke.

“She found proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“That Thomas never gave up control.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Even after he disappeared…”

She swallowed.

“He continued running everything.”

The room felt colder.

“Through who?”

Margaret looked at me.

“Through your mother.”

The words hit me.

I looked at her.

“My mother?”

Margaret shook her head quickly.

“No.”

She pointed toward herself.

“Not me.”

Then she whispered:

“Your biological mother.”

Sarah.

My chest tightened.

“What are you saying?”

Margaret looked devastated.

“Sarah was not just your father’s partner.”

“She was Thomas’s daughter.”

Nobody moved.

The information was impossible.

My biological mother…

Was connected to the man controlling everything.

My grandfather.

The man I never knew.

The man who supposedly died.

Elena whispered:

“Daniel…”

I looked at Richard.

“Is this true?”

Richard slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

My head spun.

“So Sarah was Thomas Callahan’s daughter?”

“Yes.”

“And Robert knew?”

“Yes.”

“And he still had a child with her?”

Richard looked at me.

“Because Robert loved her.”

The answer surprised me.

After everything.

After all the secrets.

After all the betrayal.

That simple statement felt different.

My father had loved someone.

And that love created me.

A knock suddenly came at the hospital door.

Everyone turned.

Detective Carter immediately reached for his weapon.

“Who is it?”

No answer.

The door opened slowly.

A nurse stood there.

“Sorry.”

She looked nervous.

“There’s someone here asking for Mr. Callahan.”

“Who?”

The nurse looked at a paper in her hand.

“An elderly man.”

My heart stopped.

“What did he say?”

The nurse hesitated.

“He said…”

She looked at me.

“He said, ‘Tell Daniel that his grandfather is tired of waiting.’”

Nobody spoke.

Detective Carter immediately stepped forward.

“Where is he?”

The nurse looked toward the hallway.

“He left.”

“Which direction?”

“He didn’t leave the building.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What?”

The nurse pointed.

“He went downstairs.”

Everyone understood.

The basement.

We rushed through the hospital corridors.

My heart was pounding.

Not because I was afraid.

Because after everything I had learned…

I wanted answers.

At the basement entrance, Detective Carter stopped everyone.

“Stay behind me.”

We entered slowly.

The lights flickered.

The empty hallway stretched ahead.

Then we saw him.

An old man standing near the emergency exit.

Gray hair.

Expensive coat.

Walking cane.

His back was toward us.

“Thomas Callahan.”

The man slowly turned around.

And I froze.

Because I had seen that face before.

Not in person.

In photographs.

Family portraits.

Old company records.

My grandfather.

Alive.

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then smiled.

“Daniel.”

My entire body went still.

He knew my name.

He walked closer.

“You finally look like your father.”

I clenched my fists.

“You’re supposed to be dead.”

He smiled.

“That was the point.”

Detective Carter raised his weapon.

“Don’t move.”

Thomas looked amused.

“Still protecting people, I see.”

I stared at the man who had been hiding for twenty years.

“The letter said you were behind everything.”

Thomas looked at me.

Then laughed softly.

“Sarah always was dramatic.”

My blood ran cold.

“You knew she wrote it.”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

The smile disappeared.

For the first time…

Thomas looked serious.

“That is the question you should have asked thirty-five years ago.”

I stepped closer.

“You know where my mother is.”

He looked directly into my eyes.

Then said something that changed everything.

“Daniel…”

“Your mother is not dead.”

The world stopped.

My breath caught.

“She’s alive.”

Elena’s voice came through the phone behind me.

“Daniel…”

Everyone was frozen.

Thomas continued.

“And she has been waiting for you.”

I stared at him.

“Where?”

Thomas looked toward the exit.

Then whispered:

“In the same place your father hid the truth.”

I waited.

“Where?”

His answer destroyed me.

May you like

“Abu Dhabi.”
