CHAPTER 12 — THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK

The weapon pointed directly at me.
For a few seconds, my brain refused to understand what I was seeing.
Because the man standing in front of me…
Was impossible.
Not because he was a stranger.
Because he wasn’t.
He was someone I had trusted.
Someone who had been there when everything started falling apart.
Someone who had promised to help me uncover the truth.
I stared at him.
“Where is Detective Carter?”
The man smiled.
A cold, emotionless smile.
“You always ask the wrong question first, Daniel.”
My hands tightened.
“Where is he?”
The fake detective tilted his head.
“You still care about everyone else.”
He looked at me.
“That’s your weakness.”
I felt Elena grab my arm.
A silent warning.
Stay calm.
Think.
Don’t react.
It was something we had learned together during eighteen months apart.
Fear made people make mistakes.
And I couldn’t afford mistakes anymore.
“Who are you?”
The man slowly removed the badge from his jacket.
Then the fake identification.
Underneath…
A completely different face.
Not a disguise.
A hidden identity.
“My name is Adrian Voss.”
The name meant nothing.
But Michael Reeves reacted immediately.
His face lost color.
“No…”
Adrian smiled.
“You remember me.”
Michael stepped back.
“You were supposed to disappear.”
Adrian laughed.
“Everyone says that.”
He looked around the abandoned clinic.
“Your problem, Michael, is that you always believed you were the hero of this story.”
My eyes moved between them.
“You know each other.”
Adrian looked at me.
“Oh, Daniel…”
His smile widened.
“I know everyone.”
The room felt smaller.
Every piece of information I had collected suddenly felt incomplete.
Thomas.
Marcus.
My mother.
Michael.
Now Adrian.
Too many players.
Too many secrets.
But one thing was becoming clear.
The person controlling everything wasn’t the loudest person in the room.
It was the person who stayed hidden.
The person who moved people like pieces on a chessboard.
I looked at Adrian.
“You were watching us.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Elena.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the coffin.”
“Yes.”
My anger rose.
“Then you let it happen.”
Adrian didn’t deny it.
“I needed to know what Elena had discovered.”
My eyes narrowed.
“She almost died.”
A small smile disappeared from his face.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.”
The words shocked me.
“What?”
He looked annoyed.
“Marcus was emotional. Your mother was desperate. Things became messy.”
I stepped forward.
“You talk about my wife like she was an experiment.”
Adrian looked at me.
“She was a variable.”
That word.
Variable.
Not person.
Not woman.
Not mother.
Variable.
Something inside me went cold.
“You’re exactly like Thomas.”
For the first time, Adrian’s expression changed.
Anger.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“You don’t know anything about Thomas Callahan.”
“No.”
I looked directly into his eyes.
“But I know people who think they are smarter than everyone else.”
Michael moved suddenly.
Not toward Adrian.
Toward the emergency exit.
Adrian immediately raised his weapon.
“Don’t.”
Michael stopped.
Adrian smiled.
“Still trying to save people.”
Michael looked at him.
“You were always a coward.”
The room went quiet.
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.”
“No.”
Michael shook his head.
“You sacrificed everyone else.”
That sentence hit something.
Something personal.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You think Robert was a good man?”
Nobody answered.
“He wasn’t.”
His voice became louder.
“Robert Callahan built everything on lies.”
He pointed at me.
“And Daniel inherited those lies.”
I stared at him.
“Then why are you doing this?”
Adrian looked at me.
“Because someone has to clean up the damage.”
I almost laughed.
“By killing my wife?”
“By removing threats.”
The words came out calmly.
That was what made them terrifying.
Suddenly, Elena spoke.
“You’re afraid.”
Everyone looked at her.
Adrian smiled.
“Excuse me?”
Elena slowly stood straighter.
“You heard me.”
Her voice was weak.
But her eyes were not.
“You’re afraid.”
Adrian stared.
“Of what?”
“The truth.”
A silence followed.
Elena continued.
“You spent years controlling people because you were afraid someone would expose you.”
Adrian’s face tightened.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I know exactly.”
Elena looked at him.
“You weren’t trying to protect the Callahan family.”
She pointed at the files.
“You were trying to erase the people who could prove what you did.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
Daniel.
I looked at Elena.
She continued.
“Because you weren’t working for Thomas.”
Everyone froze.
Adrian stared at her.
“What did you say?”
“You heard me.”
Elena’s voice became stronger.
“You weren’t his employee.”
A pause.
“You were his replacement.”
The room went silent.
Even Adrian.
For the first time…
He looked surprised.
“How?”
Elena looked at me.
“Before I was attacked, I found another file.”
“What file?”
“A private investigation Robert created.”
She looked at Adrian.
“About you.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Elena continued.
“Adrian Voss wasn’t your real name.”
Nobody moved.
“You changed it twenty years ago.”
Michael looked shocked.
“Who were you before?”
Elena stared at him.
Then answered:
“Alexander Callahan.”
My blood froze.
I looked at Adrian.
“No.”
He smiled.
Finally.
A real smile.
Because he knew.
The secret was out.
“I was hoping you would figure it out eventually.”
Michael whispered:
“Thomas’s oldest son.”
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.”
The room exploded with silence.
Thomas Callahan had a son.
Another heir.
Another person hidden in the shadows.
Another person who believed he deserved everything.
Adrian looked at me.
“My grandfather built an empire.”
He stepped closer.
“My father destroyed it.”
His eyes hardened.
“And Robert stole it.”
I shook my head.
“Your family destroyed itself.”
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“You destroyed it.”
My eyebrows tightened.
“What?”
He pointed at me.
“Because Robert chose you.”
I froze.
“You were never supposed to inherit everything.”
The words hit hard.
“What are you saying?”
Adrian leaned closer.
“Your grandfather didn’t fear Marcus.”
“He didn’t fear your father.”
“He feared you.”
The room went silent.
“Why?”
Adrian smiled.
“Because you were the only person in the family who didn’t want power.”
He looked at the documents.
“That made you dangerous.”
Suddenly, Elena’s phone rang.
Everyone looked.
Unknown number.
Adrian smiled.
“Answer it.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because the person calling is the one person who can confirm everything.”
The phone continued ringing.
Elena looked at me.
I answered.
“Hello?”
For several seconds…
Nothing.
Then a woman’s voice.
An old voice.
A voice I had never heard.
But somehow…
I knew.
“Daniel?”
My entire body froze.
Because the woman on the other end whispered:
“My son…”
I couldn’t breathe.
Elena covered her mouth.
Michael looked away.
And Adrian…
Adrian smiled.
Because he knew exactly what was happening.
“Say hello.”
I gripped the phone.
“Who is this?”
The woman cried softly.
“My name is Sarah Bennett.”
The world stopped.
“My son…”
“I have waited thirty-five years to hear your voice.”
I closed my eyes.
A thousand emotions crashed into me.
Anger.
Pain.
Confusion.
Hope.
Then Sarah said the words that changed everything:
“Daniel…”
“I know who tried to kill Elena.”
A pause.
“And I know who ordered it.”
I opened my eyes.
Adrian was watching me.
Waiting.
Sarah whispered:
“It wasn’t Marcus.”
“It wasn’t your mother.”
My heart pounded.
“Then who?”
The answer came quietly.
And destroyed the last piece of the puzzle.
“Daniel…”
“The person who ordered Elena’s death…”
May you like
“Was you.”
