CHAPTER 3 — THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The message stayed on my screen.

Six words.

Six simple words.

But they carried the weight of a threat that felt heavier than any weapon I had ever faced.

“Stop digging, or Elena dies again.”

I stared at those words until they blurred.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was trying to understand the kind of person who could write something like that.

Someone who had already tried to kill my wife.

Someone who knew Elena was alive.

Someone who believed they still had control.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Detective Carter noticed immediately.

“What happened?”

I turned the screen toward him.

His expression changed.

The tired detective disappeared.

The investigator appeared.

“When did you receive this?”

“Thirty seconds ago.”

“Did you reply?”

“No.”

“Good.”

He immediately pulled out his own phone.

“Do not respond. Do not call. Do not warn anyone.”

I looked at him.

“You think they’re watching?”

“I think whoever sent this message knows where you are.”

A cold silence filled the room.

I looked around the hospital hallway.

Doctors walking.

Nurses passing.

Families sitting in waiting areas.

Everything looked normal.

But I had learned something during my years overseas.

The most dangerous situations were not the ones where everyone was screaming.

They were the ones where everything looked peaceful.

Inside Elena’s room, she was awake.

But she looked terrified.

Not of me.

Of what she knew.

I walked toward her slowly.

“Elena.”

Her eyes immediately searched my face.

“Did they contact you?”

I stopped.

“How did you know?”

Her expression changed.

Because she already knew the answer.

“They always do.”

My stomach dropped.

“Who?”

She looked toward the window.

The city lights reflected in her eyes.

“Daniel…”

Her voice was weak.

“I need you to listen carefully.”

I sat beside her.

“I’m listening.”

She took a shaky breath.

“Your family didn’t just try to kill me.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

“They tried to erase everything.”

“What does that mean?”

She looked at me.

“The company.”

I leaned forward.

“Tell me.”

For a moment, she closed her eyes.

Like she was returning to a memory she desperately wanted to forget.

“Three months ago,” Elena whispered, “your mother came to see me.”

I frowned.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“She told me she missed you. She said she wanted to help prepare the nursery for the baby.”

I listened silently.

“But something felt wrong.”

“What?”

“She asked questions.”

“What kind of questions?”

Elena swallowed.

“About you.”

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What about me?”

“She wanted to know how long you planned to stay in Abu Dhabi.”

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It does.”

Her voice became quieter.

“Because she already knew something was happening inside the company.”

I froze.

“What?”

Elena looked at me.

“Your audit.”

My heart stopped.

“How do you know about that?”

She hesitated.

“Because I found it.”

A thousand questions appeared in my mind.

“Elena…”

“I wasn’t trying to spy on you.”

“I know.”

She looked hurt.

“I knew you were worried before you left. You never said anything, but I saw it.”

I remembered.

Before leaving for Abu Dhabi, I had noticed unusual financial reports.

Money disappearing.

Accounts being transferred.

Contracts being changed without my approval.

The Callahan Group had been built by my father.

A company worth hundreds of millions.

But after his death, Marcus slowly took control.

I suspected something.

So before leaving, I secretly hired an outside auditing firm.

No one knew.

Not even Elena.

At least...

I thought no one knew.

“What did you find?”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“Something much bigger than money.”

The room felt smaller.

“What did they do?”

Elena looked at me.

“Marcus wasn’t stealing from the company.”

I frowned.

“Then what?”

“He was preparing to destroy it.”

My heart sank.

“Why?”

“Because he wanted the insurance.”

I stared.

“What insurance?”

“The executive protection policy.”

I remembered.

A special company policy created years ago.

A policy that paid millions if the CEO position became vacant under certain circumstances.

My father created it as protection.

Not as a weapon.

Elena continued.

“Marcus planned to remove you.”

The words felt unreal.

“He couldn’t take control while you were alive.”

I slowly stood.

“So they sent me overseas.”

Elena nodded.

“Your contract in Abu Dhabi.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You think they arranged it?”

“Yes.”

My breathing became heavier.

“No.”

Elena reached for my hand.

“Daniel…”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“My brother recommended that position.”

Silence.

Because we both knew.

A knock suddenly came from the door.

Both of us froze.

A nurse entered.

“Mrs. Callahan?”

“Yes?”

The nurse smiled politely.

“Your husband’s mother is here.”

My body immediately went tense.

Elena’s face lost all color.

“No.”

The nurse looked confused.

“What?”

Elena grabbed my hand.

“Don’t let her come in.”

The nurse stepped back.

“Sir?”

I moved between the door and Elena.

“Tell her visiting hours are over.”

The nurse nodded and left.

But it was too late.

Because a voice came from the hallway.

A voice I knew my entire life.

“Daniel.”

My mother.

“I just want to see my daughter-in-law.”

My fists tightened.

Detective Carter, standing outside, immediately moved closer.

My mother entered anyway.

She looked perfect.

Black dress.

Perfect makeup.

No sign of guilt.

No sign of fear.

Only sadness.

Fake sadness.

“Elena.”

She walked closer.

“I’m so relieved you survived.”

Elena stared at her.

“You tried to bury me.”

The room went silent.

My mother’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

Then she smiled sadly.

“Daniel, she’s confused.”

I stepped forward.

“Stop.”

My mother looked at me.

“After everything I have done for you—”

I cut her off.

“Everything?”

My voice was calm.

Dangerously calm.

“You put my pregnant wife in a coffin.”

Her eyes hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.”

“No.”

I looked directly at her.

“I know exactly what I’m saying.”

Then something unexpected happened.

My mother smiled.

Not because she won.

Because she knew something I didn’t.

“You think you found the truth?”

She stepped closer.

“You have no idea what your wife discovered.”

Elena went pale.

My mother continued.

“And when you find out who she was really working with…”

She looked at Elena.

“You’ll understand why this happened.”

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?”

My mother turned toward the door.

“Ask your wife about the missing eighteen million dollars.”

Then she walked away.

The room stayed silent.

I slowly turned toward Elena.

Her face was filled with pain.

Not surprise.

Pain.

“Elena.”

She looked down.

“Daniel…”

“What eighteen million dollars?”

She didn’t answer.

“Elena.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I was going to tell you.”

My heart sank.

“Tell me what?”

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“I didn’t find the missing money.”

“I found where your father hid it.”

I stared at her.

“My father?”

She nodded.

“And Daniel…”

Her voice trembled.

“The money wasn’t stolen.”

“It was protection.”

I stepped closer.

“Protection from who?”

Elena looked toward the closed door.

Toward the hallway where my mother had disappeared.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

May you like

“From your family.”
