CHAPTER 14 — THE SON ROBERT CALLED HIS OWN

The video stopped.

Not because it ended.

Because nobody in the room could move.

My father’s voice was still hanging in the air.

“Adrian was never my enemy.”

A pause.

“He was my son.”

I stared at the frozen screen.

The man who had raised me.

The man whose final message had guided me through every secret.

Had just revealed the biggest secret of all.

Adrian wasn’t just Thomas Callahan’s hidden heir.

He wasn’t just a man trying to steal the company.

He was my father’s son.

My half-brother.

My family.

The room felt like it was spinning.

I slowly turned toward Adrian.

For the first time since I met him…

He looked human.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man carrying decades of anger.

“You knew.”

My voice was quiet.

Adrian didn’t answer.

“You knew Robert was your father.”

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

The answer came softly.

Almost like a confession.

I looked back at the screen.

My father continued speaking.

The recording continued.

Robert Callahan appeared older than I remembered.

His hair was gray.

His face was tired.

But his eyes were clear.

“Daniel, if you are watching this, then the truth has finally reached you.”

He took a deep breath.

“I owe you an explanation.”

The video showed him sitting in his private office.

The same office where I had found the hidden box.

“The biggest mistake I ever made was believing I could protect everyone by keeping secrets.”

My chest tightened.

“Secrets do not disappear.”

“They grow.”

“They wait.”

“And eventually, they hurt the people you were trying to protect.”

I looked at Margaret.

She lowered her eyes.

Because she knew exactly what he meant.

“My first son was Adrian.”

The room remained silent.

“Before I met Margaret, before Callahan Group became what it is today, I had a relationship with Sarah.”

My eyes moved toward Elena.

She was listening carefully.

“Sarah gave me a son.”

Robert looked down.

“But Thomas never accepted him.”

The recording continued.

“Thomas believed the Callahan name belonged only to those who could carry power.”

“Adrian was never a child to him.”

“He was an investment.”

My eyes moved toward Adrian.

For a second, I saw something in his expression.

Pain.

A child who had spent his entire life trying to prove he deserved love.

Robert continued:

“When I realized what Thomas was doing, I tried to remove Adrian from that environment.”

“But I failed.”

The screen flickered slightly.

“My failure created the man standing against my family today.”

Adrian looked away.

I studied him.

All these years…

I thought I was looking at an enemy.

But maybe I was looking at someone who had been hurt long before he became dangerous.

That didn’t excuse what he did.

Nothing could.

But it explained it.

And sometimes understanding someone was the first step toward stopping them.

The recording continued.

“Daniel, you need to understand something.”

Robert looked directly into the camera.

“I chose you to lead Callahan Group.”

I swallowed.

“But not because you were my strongest child.”

A pause.

“Because you were the only one who didn’t want power.”

The words hit me.

The same thing Adrian had said.

But coming from my father…

It felt different.

“You wanted to heal people.”

“You wanted to save lives.”

“That was what I wanted the company to become.”

Robert’s eyes became sad.

“Not an empire.”

“A responsibility.”

Adrian suddenly spoke.

“Turn it off.”

Nobody moved.

His voice was low.

“Turn it off.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

His expression hardened.

“You don’t want to hear the rest.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel.”

For the first time, he sounded desperate.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I understand more than you think.”

I looked at him.

“You were hurt.”

His face changed.

“You were ignored.”

His eyes narrowed.

“But you chose to become the same kind of person who hurt you.”

Silence.

That hit him.

Because it was true.

The video continued.

Robert’s voice became softer.

“Adrian, if you are watching this…”

Everyone froze.

“He was talking to him.”

Robert looked into the camera.

“I am sorry.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

“I am sorry I failed you.”

The room became completely still.

“You deserved a father who fought harder for you.”

Adrian looked away.

A single tear appeared.

But he wiped it quickly.

As if he was ashamed of it.

Robert continued.

“But pain does not give us permission to destroy others.”

The words were like a final warning.

“Adrian, if you chose revenge…”

A pause.

“Then you became exactly what you hated.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Detective Carter’s voice came through the speaker.

“Everyone needs to stay where they are.”

The real Detective Carter entered with police officers behind him.

The evidence was complete.

The recordings.

The financial documents.

The medical records.

The fake identities.

Everything.

Adrian looked around.

And for the first time…

He understood.

The game was over.

But then something unexpected happened.

Adrian laughed.

Quietly.

Everyone looked at him.

“You think this changes anything?”

Detective Carter stepped forward.

“It changes everything.”

“No.”

Adrian shook his head.

“You still don’t know the final truth.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What truth?”

He looked at me.

Not with anger.

With sadness.

“Your father never told you everything.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Stop.”

Adrian smiled.

“You really think Robert was protecting you?”

“Enough.”

“He was protecting his image.”

I stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Adrian looked at the old photograph of Sarah.

“Your father loved Sarah.”

“Yes.”

“But he also made choices.”

The room went silent.

“What choices?”

Adrian looked at Margaret.

Then at me.

“The night Sarah disappeared…”

He paused.

“Robert wasn’t the only person there.”

My heart started racing.

“Who else?”

Adrian looked at Margaret.

My mother’s face turned pale.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“Mom?”

She started crying.

“Daniel…”

My voice became colder.

“What happened that night?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I was there.”

The room froze.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the woman who raised me.

The woman who protected me.

The woman who lied to me.

“You were there?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Her tears fell.

“Sarah found out Thomas was planning to use you.”

My breathing slowed.

“She tried to run.”

“From Thomas?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Margaret looked broken.

“I helped her.”

I frowned.

“You helped her?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she disappear?”

Margaret looked at Adrian.

Then back at me.

“Because someone betrayed us.”

My heartbeat increased.

“Who?”

She whispered:

“Your father’s closest friend.”

I looked at Richard Hale.

The lawyer went pale.

But before anyone could speak…

Margaret said the words that changed the entire case.

“The person who took Sarah…”

“Was Richard Hale.”

The room exploded into silence.

Everyone turned.

Richard stood frozen.

“No.”

Detective Carter immediately moved toward him.

“Richard.”

The lawyer backed away.

“No, you don’t understand.”

I stared at him.

The man who had claimed he protected my father.

The man who carried the files.

The man who knew every secret.

“Is it true?”

Richard looked at me.

His eyes filled with regret.

“Daniel…”

“Answer me.”

A long silence.

Then he whispered:

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“Why?”

Richard looked at the floor.

“Because I was trying to save her.”

Nobody believed him.

Not even him.

“Save her?”

I stepped forward.

“You kidnapped my mother.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I hid her.”

“From who?”

Richard looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

“From Thomas.”

I froze.

“What?”

Richard whispered:

“Because Thomas ordered her death.”

The room went silent again.

“But I couldn’t save her completely.”

I stared.

“What do you mean?”

Richard looked toward the door.

Then said:

“Because Sarah was never the only person Thomas wanted gone.”

A pause.

“He wanted you gone too.”

Detective Carter looked at me.

“Daniel…”

Richard’s voice broke.

“The night Sarah disappeared…”

“You were supposed to disappear with her.”

My blood ran cold.

“Me?”

Richard nodded.

“But Robert stopped them.”

The room became silent.

Then Richard said:

“Your father saved your life.”

Everyone stood frozen.

Thirty-five years of secrets.

Thirty-five years of lies.

All leading back to one night.

One decision.

One betrayal.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Again.

Nobody moved.

I answered.

A weak voice came through.

A woman crying.

“Daniel…”

My heart stopped.

Sarah.

“I need you to listen carefully.”

“Why?”

Her voice shook.

“Because they know where I am.”

A pause.

Then:

“Thomas wasn’t the only one who survived.”

I froze.

“What are you talking about?”

Sarah whispered:

“The real person behind everything…”

“The person who ordered Elena’s attack…”

“Is still free.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who?”

Her answer came quietly.

And it destroyed everything we thought we knew.

“Your brother…”

May you like

“Marcus.”
