CHAPTER 13 — THE SON WHO WAS THE TARGET

The words echoed through the abandoned clinic.
“The person who ordered Elena’s death… was you.”
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
I stared at the phone.
My hand went completely still.
“No.”
The word came out quietly.
Then again.
“No.”
Across the room, Adrian watched me.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Almost satisfied.
Like this was the moment he had been waiting for.
“Daniel?”
Sarah’s voice trembled through the phone.
“Listen to me.”
I couldn’t answer.
My eyes stayed locked on Adrian.
“You said…”
My voice cracked.
“You said I ordered it?”
“No.”
Sarah’s voice became urgent.
“Not you. Not the real you.”
My heart raced.
“What does that mean?”
Before she could answer, Adrian stepped forward.
“That’s enough.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
He reached toward me.
“Give me the phone.”
I stepped back.
“No.”
For the first time, his expression changed.
Not anger.
Concern.
Because he knew something was happening that he couldn’t control.
Sarah was telling me something he didn’t want me to hear.
“Daniel,” Sarah whispered.
“You need to understand what happened thirty-five years ago.”
I listened.
Because after everything…
I needed the truth.
No more secrets.
No more people deciding what I could handle.
“Your grandfather knew Robert would never become like him.”
Sarah’s voice was weak.
“But Thomas also knew one thing.”
“What?”
“He knew kindness could be used against someone.”
I looked at Adrian.
He remained silent.
Sarah continued.
“When Robert tried to leave the Founders…”
“He created a backup plan.”
“The hidden account.”
“The documents.”
“The recordings.”
Everything connected.
My father had spent years preparing for the day someone came after his family.
“But Thomas found out.”
Sarah’s voice broke.
“He decided Robert’s biggest weakness was his love for his family.”
My chest tightened.
“My family.”
“Yes.”
She paused.
“Especially you.”
I frowned.
“Why me?”
“Because Robert chose you.”
I looked at Adrian.
The same words he had just said.
“You were the only child who wasn’t interested in power.”
Sarah continued.
“You cared about people.”
“You wanted to become a doctor.”
“You wanted to help others.”
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“And that made me dangerous?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because people who don’t crave power are the hardest to control.”
Adrian suddenly moved.
Fast.
He grabbed the phone from my hand.
The call disconnected.
“Enough.”
His voice was different now.
No more pretending.
No more calm businessman.
The mask was gone.
I looked at him.
“Why?”
He stared at me.
“Why what?”
“Why are you so afraid of me?”
For a moment…
Nothing.
Then Adrian laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
“Afraid?”
He stepped closer.
“You still don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
His eyes became cold.
“You think this was about money?”
“No.”
“You think this was about Callahan Group?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
He pointed at me.
“It was about the future.”
I frowned.
“What future?”
He looked around.
“Your grandfather spent his life building something.”
“A legacy.”
“A dynasty.”
I shook my head.
“A prison.”
His jaw tightened.
“Exactly.”
The answer surprised me.
Adrian continued.
“And Robert wanted to destroy it.”
“So?”
“So Thomas needed someone who could continue it.”
“And that was you?”
He smiled.
“Yes.”
I stared.
“You killed your own family for a company?”
“No.”
His eyes hardened.
“I killed for control.”
The honesty was worse than a lie.
Suddenly, Detective Carter’s voice came through my earpiece.
The real Detective Carter.
A hidden communication device we had activated before entering the building.
“Daniel.”
I froze.
The fake detective.
The real one was listening.
“You’re being recorded.”
Adrian looked around.
“What?”
I stared at him.
“You’re not as careful as you think.”
His expression changed.
Because for the first time…
He realized he wasn’t controlling the room.
Detective Carter continued:
“We have enough evidence.”
Adrian looked furious.
“Where are you?”
No answer.
Because Detective Carter was not going to reveal his position.
Adrian stepped backward.
Then smiled.
“You think evidence matters?”
I watched him.
“What?”
“You still don’t understand the Callahan family.”
He looked at me.
“People like us don’t lose because of evidence.”
“Then what?”
“Because of betrayal.”
The clinic doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman entered.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
Margaret.
My mother.
She walked slowly into the room.
My heart tightened.
“Mom?”
Adrian smiled.
“Perfect timing.”
Margaret looked at him.
Then at me.
And something happened that I never expected.
She slapped him.
The sound echoed through the room.
Nobody moved.
Not even Adrian.
“You promised me.”
Her voice shook.
“You promised you would never hurt him.”
Adrian stared at her.
“You still care about him?”
She looked at me.
With tears in her eyes.
“He is my son.”
The words broke something inside me.
After everything.
After all the lies.
She still believed that.
Adrian laughed.
“You lied to him for thirty-five years.”
Margaret’s face fell.
“I protected him.”
“No.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“You protected yourself.”
Her eyes filled with pain.
Because maybe…
A part of it was true.
She had made mistakes.
Terrible mistakes.
But she was not the person standing in front of us.
She was not Adrian.
“Tell him.”
Adrian looked at Margaret.
“Tell him why Elena was targeted.”
I turned.
“What?”
Margaret went silent.
My stomach dropped.
“Mom.”
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
The words hurt.
Because I had heard them too many times.
“I need the truth.”
She nodded.
“Marcus wasn’t trying to kill Elena.”
I froze.
“What?”
“He was trying to scare her.”
“Then who changed the plan?”
Nobody spoke.
Then Margaret looked at Adrian.
“It was him.”
My eyes moved to Adrian.
He smiled.
“Yes.”
The calmness returned.
“I adjusted the plan.”
My fists tightened.
“You put my wife in a coffin.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she found something.”
“What?”
Adrian looked at me.
“Something that could destroy me.”
I waited.
He continued:
“Your father’s final file.”
I frowned.
“What file?”
Adrian smiled.
“The one that proves I am not the rightful heir.”
The room became silent.
“The one that proves Robert chose you.”
Margaret walked toward me.
She held something in her hand.
A small USB drive.
“I found this after your father died.”
I stared.
“What is it?”
“The final recording.”
My heart stopped.
“The real one.”
Everyone went quiet.
Margaret handed it to me.
“My husband wanted you to have this when you were ready.”
I looked at Adrian.
His face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
For the first time.
Because he knew what was on that drive.
And he knew I was about to hear it.
I inserted the USB into Detective Carter’s laptop.
The screen turned on.
A video appeared.
My father.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
A recording made before his death.
He looked directly into the camera.
And said:
“Daniel…”
“If you are watching this…”
“Then Adrian has finally shown you who he is.”
I stopped breathing.
My father continued:
“I need you to know something.”
A pause.
“Adrian was never my enemy.”
Everyone froze.
I looked at the screen.
My father’s next words changed everything.
May you like
“He was my son.”
