CHAPTER 7 — THE LAWYER WHO BURIED THE TRUTH

The room was completely silent.

The only sound was the rain hitting the windows.

Slow.

Heavy.

Almost like the house itself was warning me.

The man standing in the doorway stepped into the light.

For a moment, my mind refused to accept what I was seeing.

Because I knew him.

Everyone in my family knew him.

For twenty-five years, he had been the man who protected Callahan Group from lawsuits.

The man who handled my father’s contracts.

The man who stood beside my mother during every major family decision.

The man who had been invited to my wedding.

The man who had stood beside Elena’s coffin with tears in his eyes.

Richard Hale.

The Callahan family attorney.

My father’s closest legal advisor.

My mother’s trusted friend.

And apparently…

The keeper of the darkest secrets in my family.

He held the folder tightly.

The same folder containing my father’s missing files.

Detective Carter immediately stepped forward.

“Richard Hale.”

The lawyer smiled faintly.

“Detective.”

“You’re trespassing.”

Richard looked around the room.

“No.”

His eyes moved toward me.

“I’m finishing something Robert Callahan started thirty-five years ago.”

My fists tightened.

“You knew.”

Richard looked at me.

“About what?”

“Everything.”

A sad smile appeared on his face.

“You finally found the truth.”

I wanted to attack him.

Not physically.

Something worse.

I wanted answers.

I wanted every lie exposed.

“Were you part of it?”

Richard didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“You helped them.”

His expression remained calm.

“I helped your father.”

I laughed bitterly.

“My father is dead.”

“Yes.”

He looked at the folder.

“But his mistakes are still alive.”

Those words bothered me.

Because everyone kept saying the same thing.

My father.

His mistakes.

His secrets.

His past.

But nobody would tell me what those mistakes were.

“What happened to Sarah Bennett?”

The moment I said her name…

Richard’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“You know her name.”

“Yes.”

“Who told you?”

“My wife.”

Richard looked toward Margaret.

Then back at me.

“Of course.”

A strange sadness crossed his face.

“Elena always was too intelligent for her own safety.”

My jaw tightened.

“You knew she was investigating.”

“Yes.”

“And you let it happen.”

“No.”

His answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

“I tried to stop it.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You tried to stop her?”

“I tried to warn her.”

“Warn her about what?”

Richard looked at me.

“About the truth.”

Detective Carter stepped between us.

“Mr. Hale, I need you to explain why you have confidential company files in your possession.”

Richard looked at him.

“Because those files were never supposed to disappear.”

“What does that mean?”

He slowly opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Original contracts.

Private agreements.

And one document that immediately caught my attention.

A birth certificate.

My birth certificate.

But something was wrong.

My hands trembled as I took it.

The name on it wasn’t mine.

Not at first.

The original record showed:

Mother: Sarah Bennett

Then another document.

A legal adoption agreement.

Signed by:

Robert Callahan.

And...

Margaret Callahan.

I looked at Margaret.

She looked away.

“Daniel…”

My voice was almost a whisper.

“You adopted me?”

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The truth hurt.

Even though I already knew.

Because hearing it from her made it real.

“You weren’t my biological mother.”

“No.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

She looked at Richard.

“Of losing you.”

Richard walked toward the table.

“Daniel, you need to understand something.”

I looked at him.

“Understand what?”

“Your father didn’t hide Sarah because he was ashamed.”

“Then why?”

“Because Sarah was in danger.”

“From who?”

Richard became quiet.

Then he said:

“From the people who built the original Callahan empire.”

Detective Carter frowned.

“Explain.”

Richard looked at me.

“Before your father became a billionaire, he had partners.”

“Who?”

“A group of investors.”

“Names?”

Richard hesitated.

“Your father called them the Founders.”

The name sounded ridiculous.

Almost like something from a conspiracy story.

But Richard wasn’t joking.

“They helped him build everything.”

“Then why would they hurt Sarah?”

Richard looked at the old documents.

“Because Sarah discovered they weren’t just investors.”

My stomach tightened.

“What were they?”

His voice became lower.

“They were criminals.”

The room went silent.

Rain continued outside.

I looked at Detective Carter.

He immediately understood the seriousness.

“Are you saying Callahan Group was built through illegal activity?”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Your father tried to leave.”

That sentence changed everything.

My father wasn’t hiding his past.

He was running from it.

Richard continued.

“When Robert realized what those people were doing, he tried to separate himself.”

“And Sarah?”

“She found evidence.”

“What evidence?”

Richard looked at me.

“The original financial records.”

The same thing Elena found.

“The eighteen million dollars.”

I stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Richard took a deep breath.

“The money was never stolen.”

“Then where did it go?”

“It was moved into a protection account.”

“For Sarah.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father knew if anything happened to him, Sarah would need a way to disappear.”

My heart sank.

“Disappear?”

Richard nodded.

“He wanted her alive.”

I stared.

“But she disappeared anyway.”

Richard’s face became serious.

“Because someone found her first.”

The words hit the room.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Then Margaret suddenly sat down.

Her face had lost all color.

“No…”

I turned toward her.

“You know something.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Mom.”

She looked at me.

The fear in her eyes was different.

Not guilt.

Terror.

“Margaret.”

Detective Carter’s voice was firm.

“You need to tell us.”

She covered her mouth.

Then whispered:

“Sarah didn’t disappear.”

I froze.

“What?”

“She was taken.”

My heartbeat increased.

“By who?”

Margaret looked at Richard.

Richard looked away.

That was enough.

“Richard?”

The lawyer closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

He looked at me.

“For keeping this from you.”

Then he said:

“Your biological mother was taken by the same people who are now trying to destroy Elena.”

My phone suddenly rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, I answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Daniel Callahan.”

I said nothing.

“You found Richard.”

My eyes moved toward the lawyer.

The voice continued.

“That means you’re closer than we expected.”

“Who are you?”

A soft laugh.

“You really don’t remember me, do you?”

My blood ran cold.

“Remember what?”

The voice became quieter.

“Thirty-five years ago…”

A pause.

“I was the doctor who delivered you.”

I stopped breathing.

The voice continued:

“And I was the last person who saw your real mother alive.”

The call ended.

Everyone stared at me.

But I wasn’t looking at them.

I was staring at the phone.

Because suddenly I understood.

This wasn’t only about my wife.

It wasn’t only about the company.

It wasn’t even only about my identity.

Someone had spent thirty-five years protecting a secret.

And now they were willing to kill again…

May you like

Because I was finally close to discovering it.
