CHAPTER 8 — THE LAST PERSON WHO SAW SARAH BENNETT

The call ended.
But nobody moved.
Not immediately.
The silence inside the Callahan estate felt heavier than before.
Because everyone in that room understood one thing.
The person who called me knew too much.
They knew my name.
They knew my family.
They knew about Sarah Bennett.
And most terrifying of all…
They knew they were the last person who saw my biological mother alive.
I stared at my phone.
My hand was shaking.
Not from fear.
From anger.
Thirty-five years.
Thirty-five years of missing pieces.
Thirty-five years of believing my life was simple.
And now I discovered that almost everyone around me had been carrying a secret.
My mother.
My brother.
My father’s lawyer.
Even my father himself.
Everyone knew something.
Except me.
“Daniel.”
Detective Carter’s voice pulled me back.
“You need to tell me exactly what that person said.”
I looked at him.
“He said he was the doctor who delivered me.”
Richard Hale’s face changed.
For the first time since entering the room…
The lawyer looked genuinely terrified.
“You know him?”
I asked.
Richard didn’t answer.
“Richard.”
He looked down.
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“Who is he?”
Richard slowly sat down.
“Dr. Victor Lang.”
The name meant nothing to me.
But the reaction from everyone else told me everything.
Margaret covered her mouth.
“No…”
Detective Carter immediately noticed.
“You know that name?”
Margaret looked at him.
“He was my husband’s private physician.”
“Robert Callahan’s?”
“Yes.”
I stared at her.
“Why would my father’s doctor call me?”
Nobody answered.
And that scared me more than anything.
We moved to a private conference room inside the estate.
For the first time in my life, I sat across from my family like they were strangers.
Margaret sat at one end of the table.
Richard beside her.
Detective Carter stood near the window.
And I sat in front of them.
Waiting.
“Start talking.”
My voice was calm.
But everyone knew I was barely controlling myself.
Margaret looked exhausted.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
I interrupted.
“I spent my entire life calling you Mom.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because you were my son.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me the truth?”
She looked down.
“Because Robert made me promise.”
I froze.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She swallowed.
“Because he believed telling you would put you in danger.”
I laughed quietly.
A painful laugh.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“He was trying to protect me from the truth…”
I looked around the room.
“But the truth was the only thing that could have protected me.”
Nobody argued.
Because they knew I was right.
Richard opened the folder again.
“There is something you need to know about your father.”
I looked at him.
“I’m listening.”
“Robert was not just building a company.”
“What was he building?”
“A way out.”
I frowned.
“From the Founders?”
Richard nodded.
“The group that helped finance the company in the beginning.”
“The criminals?”
“Yes.”
Detective Carter stepped forward.
“Do we have proof?”
Richard handed him a document.
“These are the original agreements.”
Detective Carter read quickly.
His expression changed.
“These names…”
“What?”
“They’re connected to several investigations from thirty years ago.”
I looked at Richard.
“So my father was involved with criminals.”
“No.”
Richard shook his head.
“Your father was trapped by criminals.”
That difference mattered.
A lot.
Elena called me while we were talking.
The moment I saw her name, everything else disappeared.
I answered immediately.
“Hey.”
Her voice was weak.
But hearing it still calmed me.
“Daniel?”
“I’m here.”
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
A pause.
“Are you safe?”
The question surprised me.
Not “what happened?”
Not “what did you find?”
Are you safe?
That told me Elena understood the danger better than anyone.
“I’m okay.”
She was quiet.
Then:
“I need to tell you something else.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“When I was investigating your father’s files…”
“Yes?”
“I found a recording.”
“A recording?”
“Yes.”
“Of what?”
Her breathing became shaky.
“Your father.”
I stood immediately.
“What did he say?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“Because I only heard part of it.”
“Where is it?”
She hesitated.
“Daniel…”
“Elena.”
“I hid it.”
“Where?”
A long silence.
Then:
“In the nursery.”
My heart stopped.
“The nursery?”
“Yes.”
“Why there?”
“Because your father wrote one thing on the recording.”
“What?”
Her voice became a whisper.
“He said…”
She paused.
“He said the only person he trusted with the truth was his grandson.”
I froze.
Our son.
The baby.
The child everyone tried to erase.
“Daniel…”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What else?”
“He said if anyone tried to hurt me…”
A tear formed in my eye.
“He wanted our son to know who his grandfather really was.”
I drove back to the hospital immediately.
The nursery.
The recording.
Everything connected.
When I arrived, Elena was awake.
She looked at me.
“You found out more.”
I nodded.
Then I sat beside her.
“Elena…”
“Yes?”
“Why didn’t you tell me about the recording before?”
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“That if I told you everything…”
She looked at my stomach.
Then at our unborn child.
“I was afraid they would come after him.”
The room became quiet.
I reached for her hand.
“You protected him.”
She nodded.
“I tried.”
“No.”
I squeezed her hand.
“You did.”
For the first time since returning home…
I saw Elena relax.
But only for a moment.
Because then she whispered:
“Daniel…”
“What?”
“The recording wasn’t the only thing hidden in the nursery.”
I looked at her.
“What else?”
She slowly reached into her bag.
And pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Again.
But this time…
The handwriting wasn’t my father’s.
It was Sarah Bennett’s.
My biological mother.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only one paragraph.
Only a few sentences.
But the first line destroyed me.
“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means Robert failed to keep you away from the people who wanted you gone.”
I stopped breathing.
I read the next line.
“Your mother Margaret loves you. But she is not the only person who lied to you.”
My eyes moved lower.
Then I saw the final sentence.
The sentence that changed everything.
“The person who tried to kill Elena is not Marcus.”
I looked at Elena.
“What?”
She looked terrified.
I continued reading.
“The person behind this has been controlling the Callahan family from the beginning.”
Then…
Below the message…
Was a name.
A name I had never expected.
A name that made Detective Carter, Richard, and Margaret all go silent when they saw it.
Because the person Sarah accused…
May you like
Was someone everyone believed had been dead for twenty years.
