CHAPTER 6 — THE NAME HIDDEN FOR THIRTY-FIVE YEARS

The envelope fell from my hands.

I didn’t notice.

I didn’t feel it.

I only saw the words written in my father’s handwriting.

Words that somehow felt heavier than anything I had ever carried.

“Your biological mother.”

For thirty-five years, I had believed I knew my story.

I was Daniel Callahan.

The first son of Robert Callahan.

The heir of Callahan Group.

The boy who grew up in a wealthy family.

The boy who thought he understood where he came from.

But now...

A single piece of paper had destroyed everything.

I looked at Elena.

My wife.

The woman who had almost died because she found a truth my own family wanted buried.

“What is her name?”

My voice barely sounded like mine.

Elena wiped her tears.

“Daniel…”

“What is her name?”

She looked down.

“I don’t know if I should be the one telling you.”

I stood up.

“After everything that happened?”

My voice cracked.

“I came home and found you inside a coffin.”

I pointed toward the envelope.

“My family lied to me my entire life.”

I took a breath.

“I need the truth.”

Elena reached into the drawer again.

This time, she pulled out a small folder.

“I found this behind the old fireplace in your father’s office.”

I stared at it.

“You went into his office?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“Because I knew something was wrong.”

She opened the folder.

Inside were old documents.

Birth records.

Medical records.

Letters.

And one photograph.

She placed the photograph in front of me.

A young woman.

Maybe twenty years old.

Dark hair.

Tired eyes.

Holding a newborn baby.

My chest tightened.

“Who is she?”

Elena whispered:

“Her name was Sarah Bennett.”

The name meant nothing.

But something inside me reacted.

Like a memory I couldn’t reach.

“Why have I never heard of her?”

Elena looked at the papers.

“Because your father made sure you never would.”

I spent the next hour reading.

And with every page...

My entire life changed.

Sarah Bennett was not a stranger.

She was a woman who worked at a small medical clinic owned by my father before Callahan Group became an empire.

Thirty-five years ago, Robert Callahan was not the powerful businessman everyone remembered.

He was a young doctor.

A man with ambition.

A man who wanted more.

According to the documents...

He had a relationship with Sarah.

A secret relationship.

Then she became pregnant.

With me.

I stopped reading.

“No.”

Elena looked at me.

“Daniel.”

“No.”

I pushed the papers away.

“My mother is Margaret Callahan.”

Elena stayed silent.

That silence hurt.

Because it confirmed what I didn’t want to accept.

“My entire life…”

My voice became low.

“My entire life was a lie?”

The door opened.

Detective Carter entered.

He immediately noticed my expression.

“What happened?”

I didn’t answer.

Elena looked at him.

“We found something.”

Detective Carter walked closer.

I handed him the photograph.

He studied it.

Then looked at me.

“Who is she?”

“My biological mother.”

His eyebrows lifted.

“You’re sure?”

I pointed at the documents.

“My father kept records.”

Detective Carter slowly read through them.

Then his face changed.

“Daniel…”

“What?”

“This woman…”

“What about her?”

He looked at me carefully.

“She disappeared thirty-five years ago.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What?”

“She was reported missing.”

“When?”

“Three months after you were born.”

The room became silent.

I stared at him.

“Missing?”

Detective Carter nodded.

“No body. No explanation.”

I felt sick.

My biological mother disappeared.

My father hid my identity.

My mother raised me knowing I wasn’t hers.

And my brother…

My brother knew something.

Because Marcus had always been treated differently.

I left the hospital that afternoon with one goal.

Find Margaret.

Not my mother.

Not anymore.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who stood beside my wife’s coffin.

The woman who had watched me search for Elena while knowing the truth.

I found her at the Callahan estate.

She was sitting in the same room where she had held the fake funeral.

The coffin was gone.

The flowers were gone.

But the memory remained.

She looked up when I entered.

“You know.”

Not a question.

A statement.

I stopped.

“You knew I found the files.”

She smiled sadly.

“I knew your father would eventually tell you.”

“Tell me?”

My voice rose.

“He died twenty years ago!”

Her expression changed.

“You have no idea what he left behind.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Neither do you, apparently.”

Her eyes hardened.

“Daniel.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“I want answers.”

Silence.

Then she said:

“I was your mother.”

The words hit me.

“You were.”

Her face tightened.

“Don’t say it like that.”

“How should I say it?”

My voice trembled.

“You knew.”

She looked away.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since the day you were born.”

I felt something break inside.

“Thirty-five years?”

She nodded.

“You let me believe—”

“I raised you.”

“You lied to me.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I protected you.”

“Protected me?”

I pointed toward the hallway.

“By putting my pregnant wife in a coffin?”

She flinched.

For the first time...

I saw guilt.

Real guilt.

“Daniel, I didn’t order that.”

“Then who did?”

She didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Marcus?”

Her silence was enough.

“Your brother found out.”

Margaret finally whispered.

I froze.

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“About me?”

She nodded.

“He discovered Sarah’s records.”

I clenched my fists.

“And what did he do?”

“He threatened me.”

“With what?”

She looked at me.

“With exposing everything.”

I stared.

“So he blackmailed you.”

“Yes.”

The room felt colder.

“But why Elena?”

Margaret looked down.

“Because Elena found the account.”

“What account?”

“The account your father created.”

My eyes narrowed.

“The hidden money.”

She nodded.

“It wasn’t stolen.”

“Then what was it?”

Her voice became barely audible.

“It was a trust fund.”

“For who?”

She looked directly at me.

“For Sarah.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“Your father discovered she was in danger.”

“From who?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

And when she spoke...

Her voice broke.

“From my family.”

I froze.

“Your family?”

She nodded.

“Before your father married me, my father was involved in illegal business.”

The words hit harder.

“He threatened Sarah.”

“Why?”

“Because Sarah knew something.”

“What?”

Margaret looked at me.

Something in her eyes told me the truth was even darker.

“She knew your father’s biggest secret.”

I waited.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel…”

“Your father wasn’t just protecting you from Marcus.”

“He was protecting you from the people who created the Callahan empire.”

Before I could ask another question...

The lights went out.

The entire house went dark.

Margaret stood immediately.

“Get down!”

The command surprised me.

Then I heard it.

A sound from outside.

Glass breaking.

Someone entering.

Detective Carter reached for his weapon.

“Everyone stay where you are.”

A shadow moved across the hallway.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

A voice I didn’t recognize.

“You should have stayed in Abu Dhabi, Daniel.”

My body went still.

Because the voice continued:

“You weren’t supposed to come home.”

A figure stepped into the moonlight.

Holding a folder.

The folder contained my father’s missing files.

And the person holding it was someone I never expected.

Someone who had been standing beside my family for years.

Someone who had attended Elena’s fake funeral.

Someone who had cried beside the coffin.

May you like

The family lawyer.
