Chapter 8 - The Flesh and Iron Traps

A blinding blue arc of electricity exploded against the guard's neck with a deafening pop.

The guard dropped his shotgun, his eyes bulging as his body seized violently before crashing to the concrete floor.

The second guard turned around sharply, raising his weapon, but Emma was already moving.

She grabbed the fallen guard's heavy tactical shotgun by the barrel and swung it with all her strength.

The stock of the weapon hit the second guard squarely in the face with a sickening crunch.

The man stumbled backward, his nose shattered, and fell into the pooling water.

"Ethan! Go! Go!" Emma screamed, grabbing the fallen shotgun and shoving Ethan forward down the narrow pipe corridor.

They sprinted blindly into the dark, leaving the groan of the injured guards behind them.

The narrow passage opened into a massive, cavernous chamber filled with heavy industrial machinery.

Enormous rusted iron pistons moved up and down with terrifying, rhythmic slams, crushing air through ancient ventilation shafts.

The noise down here was deafening, making it almost impossible to hear anything over the thundering machinery.

"Emma, look out!" Ethan shrieked, pulling her arm back just in time.

Directly in front of them, the concrete floor ended abruptly over a massive, dark pit.

A twenty-foot drop revealed an enormous, churning metal filtration grate filled with grinding steel teeth.

The only way across the pit was a narrow, rusted steel catwalk that had no handrails.

To make matters worse, heavy mechanical pendulums swung back and forth across the catwalk at regular intervals.

This entire chamber was a death trap designed to slice and crush anyone foolish enough to run through it blindly.

Emma looked back; the sound of more guards and barking hounds was rapidly approaching from the narrow tunnel.

"We have to cross, Ethan!" Emma shouted over the deafening noise of the machinery.

"I can't! I'm scared!" Ethan sobbed, staring down at the grinding steel teeth below.

"Look at me, Ethan! Look at my eyes!" Emma demanded, taking his face in her hands.

"I will not let you fall! Hold onto my waist and shut your eyes!" she ordered fiercely.

Ethan wrapped his arms around her waist like a vise, burying his face into her side.

Emma lifted her feet and stepped onto the slick, narrow iron beam of the catwalk.

The beam groaned under their weight, swaying dangerously over the pit of grinding steel.

She watched the heavy iron pendulum swing past, counting the rhythm in her head: One, two, swing... One, two, swing.

As the heavy metal block swung away, Emma sprinted forward across the narrow beam with Ethan clinging to her.

Her wet boot slipped on a patch of oil, and her leg shot out over the empty air.

"Whoa!" Emma gasped, flinging her arms out to balance herself as Ethan screamed in panic.

She caught her balance by a hair's breadth, her chest heaving as the pendulum swung back toward them.

The heavy iron block whistled through the air, missing Emma’s back by less than an inch.

She lunged forward, throwing herself and Ethan onto the solid concrete platform on the far side of the pit.

They rolled onto the cold floor, breathing heavily as the pendulum continued its lethal arc behind them.

On the other side of the pit, three security guards burst out of the tunnel, holding the heavy attack hound on a thick chain.

The dog barked furiously, straining against its leash as it looked across the gap at them.

"Stop right there!" a guard screamed, raising his rifle across the pit.

"Try coming across, you cowards!" Emma yelled back, raising her stolen shotgun and firing a round into the ceiling above them.

The heavy gunshot echoed like thunder in the cavernous room, shattering an ancient steam pipe overhead.

A massive cloud of scalding white steam burst out of the pipe, completely blinding the guards and blocking the catwalk.

The guards screamed in agony as the superheated steam burned their skin, forcing them to retreat back into the tunnel.

Emma grabbed Ethan’s hand, not waiting to see if they would find another way around.

They ran down a long, sloping ramp that led even deeper into the subterranean foundations of the estate.

The digital display on the wall here read: 04:15:22.

Forty-five minutes had already passed, and they were buried deeper in the earth than ever before.

As they reached the bottom of the ramp, the concrete walls gave way to old, hand-dug dirt tunnels reinforced with rotting wooden beams.

The smell of earth, decay, and stagnant water became overwhelming.

Suddenly, a quiet, metallic sound clicked beneath Emma’s foot.

She froze instantly, a cold shockwave of absolute terror paralyzing her entire body.

Directly beneath her boot, a heavy pressure plate set into the dirt floor had depressed three inches.

A series of mechanical gears whirred into motion inside the dirt walls on either side of them.
