Chapter 18 - The Shadow's Echo

Six months later.
The morning sun shone brightly through the large glass windows of a cozy, sunlit apartment in the quiet seaside town of Northport.
The sound of waves crashing against the sandy shore echoed gently through the open balcony doors.
Emma stood at the kitchen counter, flipping golden pancakes on a sizzling iron skillet while the scent of fresh coffee filled the air.
Ethan sat at the wooden dining table, diligently completing his fourth-grade math homework with a bright yellow pencil.
His skin was healthy, his cheeks full, and his eyes bright with laughter—a complete transformation from the terrified boy trapped behind the plaster wall.
The television mounted on the living room wall was playing the morning news on low volume.
FEDERAL TRIAL OF THE STERLING NETWORK CONTINUES - 45 CONVICTED.
The news anchor reported smoothly: "Yesterday, three former state senators and two high-ranking police officials were sentenced to life in prison without parole for their involvement in the Sterling estate holding network..."
Emma glanced at the screen, then turned it off with the remote control, choosing to fill the room with peace instead of dark memories.
Thanks to the victim restitution fund established from the seized Sterling assets, Emma had been awarded a substantial settlement that secured their financial future forever.
She had purchased this small house by the ocean, far away from the dark corridors and wealthy mansions of the city.
Ethan put his pencil down and looked up at her with a wide grin.
"I finished all ten problems, Emma!" he declared proudly, holding up his paper.
"Let me see, super-genius," Emma smiled, walking over and scanning his answers.
"Perfect score, as usual," she praised, tapping his nose playfully.
Suddenly, a soft knock echoed from the front door of the apartment.
Emma’s smile froze for a tiny fraction of a second.
Even after six months, loud knocks or unexpected sounds still triggered a brief spike of vigilance deep within her chest.
She walked calmly to the door and checked the peephole.
Standing on the porch outside was a tall, middle-aged woman wearing a sharp navy blue suit, holding a leather briefcase.
Emma unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open.
"Emma Miller?" the woman asked politely, pulling an official identification badge from her jacket.
"My name is Detective Sarah Jenkins, Special Task Force."
"Can I help you, Detective?" Emma asked, keeping her body positioned casually in front of the doorway.
"I apologize for dropping in unannounced, Miss Miller," Detective Jenkins said, her expression serious and respectful.
"I'm here regarding the final inventory check of the Sterling estate demolition site in the city."
"The wrecking crews completely leveled the foundation yesterday morning," the detective explained.
"And they found something sealed in a concrete vault beneath the third sub-level that wasn't on any of the original blueprints."
Detective Jenkins opened her leather briefcase and pulled out a thick, sealed manila envelope.
"What did they find?" Emma asked, her eyes narrowing slightly.

"A locked iron chest bearing your mother's name," Detective Jenkins revealed softly.
Emma’s heart stopped in her chest.
