Chapter 7 - The Lower Labyrinth

The cold concrete floor rushed up to meet them with a terrifying speed.

Emma twisted her body mid-air, taking the full brunt of the impact as she crashed onto the hard ground.

Ethan landed heavily on top of her, his small body trembling uncontrollably as he clutched her torn uniform.

A loud hydraulic hiss echoed above them as the ceiling trapdoor slammed shut, cutting off all light from the ballroom.

Total, suffocating darkness enveloped them once again.

The air down here was cold, damp, and thick with the unmistakable stench of stagnant water and old iron.

Emma lay on the concrete floor for a moment, her lungs burning as she gasped for air.

Every bone in her body screamed in protest, but the sound of distant mechanical gears turning brought her back to reality.

"Emma... Emma, wake up..." Ethan whimpered in the dark, his small hands pulling on her hair.

"I'm here, Ethan... I'm right here," Emma choked out, forcing her aching body into a sitting position.

She reached out and pulled Ethan tight against her chest, wrapping her arms around his shivering frame.

"Are you hurt, buddy? Tell me if anything breaks," she whispered urgently against his ear.

"My knees hurt... but I can walk," Ethan whined, his voice barely audible.

Emma reached into her soaking apron pocket to check her stolen utility knife and the heavy stun baton.

Both weapons were still there, though the stun baton's battery indicator flickered wildly.

Suddenly, a series of low-wattage red emergency lamps flickered on along the concrete ceiling above.

The dim, blood-red light revealed a long, narrow tunnel stretching out in front of them.

The walls were made of rough, unfinished concrete, lined with heavy iron pipes and rusting electrical conduits.

Every twenty feet, small metal signs were bolted to the concrete walls, bearing strange numbers and symbols.

"Look," Ethan whispered, pointing a small, trembling finger down the dark corridor.

A large digital clock mounted high on the wall suddenly flared to life with glowing red numbers: 05:00:00.

The numbers immediately began counting down second by second: 04:59:59... 04:59:58...

A harsh, mechanical loudspeaker crackled to life in the ceiling directly above their heads.

Mr. Sterling’s voice echoed down the tunnel, cold, clear, and dripping with sadistic pleasure.

"Welcome to the Lower Labyrinth, Emma," Mr. Sterling’s voice boomed through the speakers.

"You have five hours until dawn," he continued smoothly.

"If you can find the emergency drainage outlet that leads to the river, you survive," he stated flatly.

"However, my security team has been equipped with night-vision gear and non-lethal tracking hounds," he added with a chilling chuckle.

"If they catch you before the clock hits zero, you become permanent fixtures in our collection," Mr. Sterling warned.

"Let the hunt begin," he concluded, and the loudspeaker went dead with a loud static pop.

A high-pitched mechanical siren began to blare down the far end of the tunnel, echoing off the damp concrete.

In the distance, the muffled sounds of aggressive, snarl-filled barking began to reverberate through the pipes.

"Emma... dogs... I hear dogs..." Ethan whimpered, grabbing her hand in absolute terror.

Emma pulled Ethan to his feet, her heart slamming against her ribs with violent force.

"Run, Ethan! Don't look back!" Emma yelled, gripping his small hand tightly as they sprinted down the red-lit tunnel.

Their shoes splashed through shallow pools of foul, oily water that covered the uneven concrete floor.

The corridor twisted and turned sharply every fifty yards, designed to completely disorient anyone trying to navigate it.

Emma kept her left hand pressed against the cold concrete wall, trying to track their direction.

Behind them, the terrifying sound of metallic doors sliding open echoed through the subterranean maze.

Heavy boots thundered against the floor, accompanied by the frantic scratching of dog claws on concrete.

"This way!" Emma barked, shoving Ethan into a narrow side passage marked with a faded yellow arrow.

The side passage was barely wide enough for one person, lined with sharp, exposed copper pipes.

Ethan squeezed through first, crying silently as the sharp metal scraped his knees.

Emma backed into the tight space right behind him, raising her stolen stun baton toward the main corridor.

The loud, frantic panting of a massive hound echoed just outside the narrow passage.

A huge black attack dog with glowing red tracking eyes sprinted past their hiding spot, its jaws snapping at the air.

Two security guards in full tactical armor followed close behind, holding heavy assault shotguns and flashlights.

"Check the side veins!" one guard yelled into his tactical headset.

"The girl’s got a kid with her, they can't move fast!" the other guard barked back.

Emma held her breath, her hand shaking so hard the stun baton almost slipped from her fingers.

She pressed her back against the icy wall, praying the darkness would hide their presence.

The guard’s tactical flashlight swept across the entrance of the narrow passage, missing them by inches.

As the guards moved past, Ethan suddenly slipped on a patch of black moss, his shoe squeaking loudly on the cement.

The guard stopped dead in his tracks and spun around, pointing his shotgun directly into the narrow gap.

"I found them!" the guard roared, pulling his weapon to his shoulder.

May you like

Emma didn't think; she reacted on pure survival instinct.

She lunged forward through the narrow gap, driving the crackling stun baton straight into the guard's exposed neck.
