Chapter 6 - The Dark Auction

A massive burst of blue sparks exploded in the narrow ceiling space.

The blinding flash illuminated the wooden framing as electrical arcs hissed across the steel junction box.

Below her, every single light in the grand ballroom instantaneously died.

The glittering crystal chandeliers went pitch black, plunging the entire mansion into complete darkness.

Loud gasps and panicked shrieks of confusion erupted from the wealthy crowd down on the ballroom floor.

"What is happening with the power?!" a man shouted angrily in the dark.

"Security! Get the backup generators online immediately!" Mr. Sterling's voice boomed over the rising panic.

Emma didn't wait for the guards to react.

She shoved her boots against the plaster drywall, using all her remaining strength to kick outward.

The dry plaster shattered with a loud, violent crunch, crumbling into the darkness below.

Emma swung her body out of the open ceiling frame, grabbing the heavy iron chain of the central chandelier.

She slid down the rough metal links, her palms burning as friction tore through her skin.

She dropped the final ten feet, landing hard on the polished mahogany floor of the grand ballroom.

The room was filled with utter chaos as confused guests stumbled over one another in the dark.

Emma scrambled to her feet, ignoring the sharp pain in her ankles, and sprinted straight toward the glass pit.

"Ethan!" she screamed into the darkness, her voice cutting through the panic of the crowd.

"Emma?!" a tiny, terrified voice answered from inside the sunken enclosure.

"I'm right here, Ethan! I'm coming!" she shouted back, feeling her way along the edge of the glass wall.

She reached the perimeter of the pit and dropped onto her hands and knees, feeling for the opening latch.

Her fingers found a heavy steel sliding door set flush with the mahogany floor.

She shoved the door open with a loud metallic scrape and slid down into the cold glass pit.

"Emma!" Ethan sobbed, throwing his arms out as best he could while bound to the wooden chair.

Emma pulled a sharp utility knife she had snatched from the basement out of her pocket.

She frantically sliced through the thick ropes wrapping around Ethan’s arms and chest.

"I've got you, buddy! I've got you!" she wept, pulling his small, trembling body into her arms.

"I was so scared... they said you were gone..." Ethan sobbed, burying his face in her muddy apron.

"I'm never leaving you, do you hear me? Never!" Emma promised, hoisting him onto her back.

Suddenly, the harsh red emergency backup lights flickered to life along the high walls of the ballroom.

The eerie crimson light revealed dozens of wealthy guests staring down into the pit in absolute shock.

At the edge of the pit stood Mr. Sterling, surrounded by four heavily armed security guards with pistols drawn.

His face was contorted into a terrifying mask of absolute, unbridled rage.

"You really are a persistent little rat, aren't you, Emma?" Mr. Sterling said, his voice cold as liquid nitrogen.

The four guards raised their weapons, pointing the dark gun barrels directly down at Emma and Ethan.

"Shoot her," Mr. Sterling ordered flatly, without a single shred of hesitation.

"Wait!" a booming, authoritative voice shouted from the back of the ballroom crowd.

The guests turned in surprise as a tall, elderly man in a white suit stepped through the crowd.

He had silver hair, a thick mustache, and carried a heavy gold-topped cane.

"Mr. Sterling, killing a staff member in front of thirty high-profile investors is an unacceptable risk," the elderly man stated coldly.

"Lord Vance," Mr. Sterling said, his eyes narrowing slightly as he lowered his hand.

"She knows about the tunnel system and the holding shafts," Mr. Sterling argued tightly.

"She cannot leave this property alive."

Lord Vance smiled darkly, leaning heavily on his gold-topped cane as he looked down at Emma.

"Then put her in the game," Lord Vance suggested smoothly, a sick glint in his dark eyes.

"The investors came here tonight expecting a show," the old man continued, looking around at the murmuring crowd.

"Let the maid and her brother run the Lower Labyrinth," Lord Vance proposed.

"If they survive until dawn, they go free," he added, turning to Mr. Sterling.

"And if they don't?" Mr. Sterling asked, a cruel smile slowly creeping back onto his lips.

"Then our guests receive the most thrilling hunt this estate has hosted in a decade," Lord Vance chuckled softly.

The surrounding crowd of wealthy elite began murmuring in excitement, nodding their agreement with the sick proposal.

"A live hunt... fascinating," a woman in diamonds whispered to her husband.

"I'll place fifty thousand on the guards finding them before midnight," a man in a tuxedo called out.

Emma held Ethan tightly against her chest, her blood running cold as she realized what was happening.

She wasn't being rescued; she was being turned into sport for a room full of monsters.

Mr. Sterling stepped to the edge of the glass pit and looked down at Emma with icy eyes.

"You wanted to save your brother, Emma," Mr. Sterling said softly.

"Now let's see how long you can keep him alive in the dark."

Mr. Sterling reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small black remote control.

He pressed a red button on the device.

A heavy hydraulic groan echoed beneath the glass pit as the floor beneath Emma and Ethan suddenly opened up.

They tumbled backward into the black abyss, falling straight down into the deep, subterranean tunnels of the Lower Labyrinth.
