Chapter 3 - The Blueprint of Cages

The air in the sub-basement was incredibly heavy, tasting like dust and old rust.

Emma slowly pulled herself up from the wet concrete floor, wincing as her bruised knees took her weight.

She reached into her soaking wet apron pocket and pulled out her cheap cell phone.

The screen was cracked, and the battery icon flashed a glaring red three percent.

She clicked on the flashlight app, praying it would hold out just a little longer.

A weak, flickering beam of white light pierced the oppressive darkness of the cellar.

The room was massive, filled with ancient, broken furniture covered in thick white sheets.

It looked like a graveyard for the forgotten luxuries of the Sterling family's past.

Emma moved quietly, her wet boots squeaking softly against the cement.

She needed to find the service stairwell that led up to the ground floor's west wing.

She needed to get back to the corridor with the hollow wall before Mr. Sterling moved Ethan.

As she navigated through a maze of covered grand pianos and rotting wooden cabinets, something caught her eye.

In the center of the room, completely out of place among the junk, sat a long, modern steel table.

The table was illuminated by a single, low-hanging industrial bulb that hummed with electricity.

Emma cautiously approached the table, keeping her phone flashlight pointed forward.

The surface of the steel table was covered in large, wide rolls of architectural blueprints.

There were also several heavily redacted construction permits scattered across the edges.

Emma picked up one of the large blue sheets, unrolling it carefully under the dim overhead light.

It was a floor plan of the Sterling estate, labeled with dates from a massive renovation two years ago.

Her eyes frantically scanned the intricate white lines, looking for the west wing corridor.

When she found the hallway on the paper, her breath stopped in her throat.

The walls on the blueprint were not drawn as solid structural lines.

They were drawn as thick, double-layered blocks with massive empty spaces in between them.

Emma traced her trembling finger along the hollow gaps in the drawing.

The empty spaces didn't just exist behind the founder's portrait.

They connected to a vast, sprawling network of narrow tunnels built directly between the walls of every single room.

The entire mansion was essentially built like an intricate, giant ant farm for human beings.

She unrolled another blueprint, this one labeled "Ventilation and Structural Supports."

Her blood ran ice cold as she read the detailed notes written in the margins by hand.

The notes did not describe load-bearing beams or electrical wiring pathways.

The handwritten red ink detailed "Observation Points," "Acoustic Dampening," and "Locking Mechanisms."

Mr. Sterling had intentionally turned his ancestral home into a massive, hidden maze of cages.

"Oh my God," Emma whispered aloud in the empty basement, her hand covering her mouth.

This was not a tragic accident.

Ethan had not just wandered into an old, broken wall and gotten trapped by mistake.

He had been hunted, captured, and intentionally sealed inside a custom-built prison.

Emma dropped the blueprints, her mind spinning with terrifying questions.

Why would a billionaire build a torture maze inside the walls of his own home?

And more importantly, how many other people were currently trapped inside this house?

Suddenly, the harsh sound of heavy footsteps echoed from the top of a metal staircase nearby.

Emma immediately switched off her phone's flashlight and ducked behind a towering wooden grandfather clock.

The heavy steel door at the top of the stairs groaned open, spilling harsh yellow light into the basement.

Two men walked slowly down the metal stairs, their heavy work boots clanging loudly.

Emma recognized one of the voices instantly; it was the head of security who had bribed the police officer.

"Did the boss say what to do with the new one?" a gruff, unfamiliar voice asked.

"He wants the boy moved from the outer corridor drop-point into the central holding shaft," the head of security replied smoothly.

"That stupid maid almost ruined the entire schedule by ripping the wall open," he added with a scoff.

Emma clenched her fists so hard her fingernails dug deep into her raw, bleeding palms.

"Are we moving him now?" the gruff man asked, holding up a heavy crowbar and a flashlight.

"No, we let him tire himself out first," the security chief answered callously.

"The boss wants to use the acoustic feeds for his private guests after the main party ends," he explained.

"They pay top dollar to listen to the new ones cry in the dark," he chuckled darkly.

A wave of pure, violent nausea hit Emma so hard she thought she was going to throw up.

The high-society gala upstairs wasn't just a party for rich people to drink champagne.

It was a front for a group of sick, twisted billionaires who paid to listen to children trapped in the walls.

"What about the maid?" the gruff man asked, lighting a cigarette in the dark.

"Davis chased her off the property, but the boss doesn't like loose ends," the security chief said coldly.

"He sent a crew to her apartment in the city to wait for her."

"If she shows up there, they'll bag her and bring her back here to join her brother in the lower tunnels."

Emma's eyes widened in sheer terror in the darkness.

She had no home to run back to, no police to call, and no one to trust.

"Alright, let's grab the maintenance keys and prep the central shaft," the security chief ordered, walking past the steel table.

Emma held her breath, pressing her body completely flat against the wooden clock.

The two men walked past her hiding spot, their flashlights sweeping dangerously close to her wet boots.

They headed toward a heavy, reinforced steel vault door at the far end of the basement.

The security chief pulled a massive ring of keys from his belt and unlocked the vault.

A loud, mechanical clanking echoed through the basement as the heavy door swung open.

As the door opened, a horrifying sound drifted out from the darkness beyond the vault.

It wasn't just one voice crying in the dark.

It was the faint, muffled sound of at least a dozen different voices, all whispering, weeping, and begging for help.

The entire foundation of the Sterling estate was alive with trapped souls.

The two men stepped into the dark tunnel and pulled the heavy steel vault door shut behind them.

The loud click of the locking mechanism echoed through the silent basement.

Emma stepped out from behind the clock, trembling violently from head to toe.

Her battery indicator flashed one last time before her phone screen went completely black, dying in her hand.

May you like

She was utterly alone in the dark, standing at the entrance to a billionaire's private hell.

And she knew, with absolute certainty, that she was going to walk right into it.
